  • I'm having a problem on my laptop booting MineOS in Grub2. I have a Win7 partition and a Ubuntu partition (with swap). When I install MineOS it only boots MineOS in LILO, so I try to configure Grub2 and it doesn't list MineOS unless I reinstall Ubuntu (Haven't successfully installed grub from LiveCD). If it's listed in Grub after reinstalling Ubuntu, MineOS has a kernel panic every time (and isn't fixed by the suggestion in the wiki). Halp?

  • Hi,

i have a problem. On my Acer Aspire 1400 (extra for mineos), the installation stopped by "loading modules... ARA, SCSI"... then it not longer loads. I'm not using any virtual machine.

  • hi guys on putty i keep getting a "network error: connection timed out." and my connection thing or whatever is on nat plz help me

  • Ok so to all those who are having the issue where once you start up the server its still down. Create a new server and believe it or not it could be the server name particularly spaces but I am not sure I named my server test instead and it worked.

  • I would like some help, i am good up to the point were you have to use putty.... i start up putty with the right ip from ifconfig (10.0.2.15) i put that ip into putty and it gives me this error message: "network error: connection timed out." please help

  • @DiGitalxKillA I assume you are also using Virtualbox? 10.x.x.x addresses are reserved for NAT translated IPs; to have this address you must have selected NAT rather than BRIDGED mode for your adapter. If you have any questions, check the wiki home page for VirtualBox "Modifying virtual machine settings" step 2

  • @MineOSadmin k now i got every thing up and good but now when i start the server it says it started, but when i go to console its blank (i click display) and when i go to status it says down.

  • I'm requesting a RamDisks Tutorial starting at fresh install for MineOS CRUX.

I like running MineOS usings ramdisks, but no clue how to do it with MineOS CRUX.

  • @SubrealWorld no tutorial necessary. During the install, choose to use ramdisks or not--there's no other special considerations necessary to get them working (they're more efficiently implemented in CRUX than the old MineOS)

  • @MineOSadmin So if I select "yes" and create RAM Disks during the installation, all of the worlds under /home/mc/servers is automatically put into the RamDisk?

  • is there a way to configure wifi on this os. either over command line or gui?

  • @Walternzani In the wiki linked in the description, search for 'wireless'

  • When I click start, it's saying Executing command.... then, after a couple of seconds it says that the server is started. but when i go to Status it says down...

everyone who has this problem please thumbs up so I can find a solution...

  • @rickbergmans02 Is it with a bukkit server?

  • @rickbergmans02 Verify this equation on your config:

memory dedicated to minecraft + 50mb + ramdisk size if used <= total system ram.

  • Excellent video (and OS)... is there some easy guide as to how to import existing MC worlds?

  • @Methanoid check the wiki link in the description and search for 'importing' for detailed instructions.

  • When I open the IP in putty it just shows a black box with a little green square and then it says timed out.

  • I am using the 64 bit version and there are some slight differences, like when I edit the /etc/rc.d/net and that other one to make the ip static. There are extra lines and they confuse me and I got the static ip to work on one test vm, but the second one I setup(for practice) I couldn't get it to work. I used nano to edit the files, as vi is still a little, odd for me.

  • When I get to the part where I'm supposed to log in as root, my keyboard turns off. I tried plugging in a few different ones in different ports and retrying. Right when I get to that prompt, the kyeboard turns off. Anything else will stay powered. It only turns off keyboards. Anyone have a clue?

  • I have a question ... I have it running smoothly but i want to be able to use this with my friends out of state how would i go about doing that? I have tried the NAT adapter in network settings and it gives me an ifconfig of 10.0.4.12 and it doesnt work in minecraft when I try to connect to it any idea as to what to do?

  • @treyschoolaccount BRIDGED mode is what gives the 192.x.x.x

  • @MineOSadmin ok i have it running as bridged ... so now what do i do to allow my friends to play? do i give them my ip?

  • Thanks for this! It runs so smooth. Setting this up was fun, re-learning Linux commands, lol.

I'm having trouble setting up a network bridge though. The computer I'm using has 3 Gigabit network cards, and I normally plug my laptop into one of the ports. I installed bridge-utils, but when I try running it, it appears the kernel doesn't have this support enabled... Is it hard to upgrade an existing installation of MineOS with a new kernel that has this support?

  • i reboot then it freeze

  • It should be pointed out that you need your virtual box network settings put in "bridged mode" the latest version NAT's by default.

  • @SecurityCat23 Never mind, Fixed it.

  • I install this, but after I reboot, it forces me into setup. Any help?

  • @SecurityCat23 Remove the .iso/CD :D

  • Is it possible to use dynamic IP clients such as the No-IP client? I cannot get a static IP in my county so I rely on free DNS hosting :/

Epic OS btw :D Thanks so much

  • didnt find sdh0 on an eeepc.

  • Where are the server jars stored? For some reason bukkit servers won't start, but vanilla servers will on my machine.

  • @tdog158 Hi i had the same problem but i found that the server jar files are found in the following directory 'root/usr/games/minecraft'. I just searched the directories for a while before i found it.

  • Another thing is no matter how many times I try to start my server it never starts. Just goes back to 'down'.

  • @MrMakeman this is due to error/problems in the bukkit server file (probably). Try running a vanilla server. If it work then you have to ftp into mineos and replace the bukkit jar in the following directory "root/usr/games/minecraft", hope it helps

  • A problem I noticed so far (not sure if I just didn't look hard enough or something) but there is no option to make a private server. :/

Is there an option to make a private server?

    Thanks in advance.

  • @MrMakeman there is an option to make it private. Firstly make a server then go to status and click on the name of ther server. It should navigate to a page with two links. Click on server.properties and scroll down to online mode it is just past halfway down the page. Hope this helps

  • Thanx it worked :D but have a problem. When i turn on the server, it automaticly goes off again. :\ help?

  • Correction on my previous post, The files actually are not downloading. Once I click Download the links and words "downloading..." just disappear and nothing happens

  • @treyschoolaccount have you tested to see if the internet works? ping, etc.

  • @MineOSadmin i got it to work i just went back to the previous version on the wiki page (the ~70MB .iso) but i don't know if the internet worked on the one i was having trouble with, puTTY wouldnt even allow me to log on so im not sure what I did.

  • @MineOSadmin i click download on the main page with the files need to be downloaded, it says downloading, but the page disappears and it is just a blank page with the server overview and actions tab etc. when i refresh, it says i need to download the files again

  • @treyschoolaccount Maybe your nameserver 192.168.1.x line in the /etc/resolv.conf file is missing.

  • I have a problem. I click on download at the beginning and it says that they have been downloaded, however when i go to make a server there is no jar selection in the drop down menu in the Minecraft jar slot

  • This looks really cool but I'm a total n00b when it comes to this kind of stuff, and I wonder if it's possible to install this as Dual Boot with Windows 7, so I can choose to use this or windows 7 from the same computer?

  • @BastarB Theres probably not a lot of benefit to dual booting this with Windows 7---typically servers that are your 'desktop'/playable computer don't need to be also used as a 'full time server'. If you're using your main PC for serving, consider using the VM approach.

For the most part, a server OS is expected to be a full time OS, so a dual boot isn't realistically as useful.

  • @MineOSadmin Thanks for your answer Will! I understand that there won't be much benefit Dual-Booting this in most some cases, but I'm still curious and therefore asking if it's possible! Will LILO that is included with the installation detect my Windows 7 installation if I don't repartition the Windows 7 partitions during install of MineOS? Does dualbooting of this OS differ from any other distributions? I like to try this out on my old laptop to see how well it will perform just of curiosity!

  • I got everything installed correctly and running smooth but I was wondering...and it's going to suck if I cant... but, how do I go about installing server mods like IC2 if I have MineOS Crux running in a VM? I'm sure I'm missing something (hopefully) simple but a tutorial on modding the server .jar or some way to install mods would be extremely helpful.

  • @BlackWolf18C A VM doesnt need to be treated any differently than any regular server. The server has an IP address which is reached for SSH, FTP and the MC server--so the steps to run mods would be no different: connect to the servers IP via FTP and copy the files. Connect to the IP via SSH and configure them, and then connect via the client to play.

Theres information on the front page of the wiki demonstrating how to transfer files if you need.

  • Sorry For the Newb Question, im Fairly New to linux. during install i get an error 'Unable to find Root Partion'. This is after i select what HDD i install to, i dont see what the problem is / can be.

  • Questions: I have a 250G computer I'm dedicating to nothing but MC server. Your 1500mb and 650mb partition seemed weak- can i go for 2/3 G for each if i like? How do i allot a ton of RAM since i have 250G free? how do i change my MC IP address for connection to my server? 5:59 what is the RAMDISK/ can i say yes? Can you post a tutorial for the forum / simple site? (7:30) and how do we get plugins/ transfer maps over a usb? Yes, yes im new. :)

  • @bluetube5000 250G is a very sizeable HDD and you're welcome to use it in any amount you please; i have simply used the bare minimums to demonstrate them. Should you choose, you can make 1500mb 22000mb, its entirely up to you. As far as swap, 650 is probably good enough, or 1GB, because swap is hardly used in well-configured servers (e.g., ram allocation appropriate.)

Don't say yes to ramdisk unless youre familiar with it, and you can read about it in the wiki.

  • @MineOSadmin Hey thanks for replying but in the partiton menu it says there is a fatal error and it also wont connect to the internet. i think it doesn't have sane defaults

  • @bluetube5000 I have a tutorial for phpbb, but all forum softwares should have nearly no difference compared to a typical linux distro, so you're welcome to use any PHP based forum you choose using the instructions prescribed by their site.

On the wiki too, theres a page on importing existing worlds, check the comments of the video for the page.

  • Kernel panic...

  • @Tokiopopski

is it a machine with SATA or IDE HDD Controller? when i was trying to install an older Version of Ubuntu, it said kernel panic. after switching the HDD controller to IDE-mode in my Bios it was fine. Maybe that works on Crux, too? Let me know...

  • The power of Open Source!

  • ifconfig is only pulling 127.0.0.1 and not showing my ethernet? how do I fix this?

  • @Icefenix45560 most common cause is ethernet driver not supported by the kernel. Assuming you're still setup for DHCP (didnt change to static), you can instead try the 'extended support' kernel, which might contain it instead.

  • can u tell me how to install craftbukkit plugins?

    please, becouse i like plugins!

    Rolf.

  • @MineOSadmin

First of all: Great WORK! It is working perfekt!

But I have a question, too. Would it be possible, that the 2 Mineos-scripts will run on another Distro? I would prefer Debian, but Fedora and ArchLinux would be fine, too. I am asking, because I want to use the PaspberryPi as server, but i want to use it for other server work, too. And I don't want to do that on Crux. It has a 700MhZ CPU and 256MB Ram, so I wont be able to use a virtual machine.

It would be really Great, if it works

  • raspberrypi(dot)org

  • @MineOSadmin - what are the minimum and recommended system specs for a server? I have some old parts I want to use but I'm not sure what I need to run, and what's recommended. I plan to run just a few friends on a single map, if that's any help.

  • @iiLukesterMc No.

  • @MineOSadmin - Would this be better ran on a virtual machine using a 3.4GHz Phenom II x6, 8GB RAM 1600MHz, 1TB 7200rpm harddrive, radeon 6950 2gb... or can this be installed to a machine, so it is dedicated/the only OS on the machine? This machine would be a 2.3 GHz duel core with 3GB RAM and some crappy GFX card. Thanks in advance.

  • @SuperDan360 The majority of CRUX installations are straight onto 'bare metal', i.e., installed as the only OS on the machine. The video shows virtualbox only because there's no way to record the screen from linux console.

  • @iiLukesterMc If youre asking if you can log onto a minecraft server if the computer is turned off, then no you cannot. MineOS CRUX expects to be on 24/7 for most purposes--it of course can be turned off anytime you please if you arent needing 24/7, as in for just you and friends who play on dependable schedules.

  • Would Mineos be compatible with a wireless adapter instead of using an Ethernetport?

  • @djjoetmusic MineOS CRUX has modular support for many wireless adapters. That said, unlike other linux distros or windows that you may have used, there is no GUI setup for wpa access, so its the admins responsibility to learn CLI WPA (command line). Limited help is available on the wiki, but since wireless is NOT a solid connection that servers demand, its of lower priority.

  • i keep getting an error after the drives settle. can someone tell me how to make the install?

  • @TheCCRex could be your hardware isnt supported by the install iso. I uploaded a new one today, version 0.4.11 with extended driver support you should try.

  • @MineOSadmin Thanks. ill try that.

  • I've got everything installed and working, but when I go to import in my old server that was previously created on the original MineOS, it says the server status is "foreign". Is there any way that I can get it to work in MineOS Crux?

  • @Tagrost click 'foreign' and it'll generate the necessary server.config file for you. then you can start it.

  • I installed Mineos on a machine, but it can't find the eth0

I tried to fix this but we didn't get it to work.

We use an eeepc 1000h with wifi AND ethernet port, both don't work.

    what should I do?

  • 1. What is the default password for mc? It wouldn't let me change it without the current one,

    2. What is the port for the admin console, and how can I change it through putty (if possible)?

  • @Veraciful I have the same problem with changing the mc password. Can't find the default one.

  • @GoodCoffeeInc No default password--it is unset and you can set it freely, as shown at 5:10.

  • @MineOSadmin It prompted me for one; for anyone else with this problem, log in to root on the machine and type "passwd mc" and it will let you change it.

  • @Veraciful There is no default password. As shown at 5:10, it simply asks for a new password, not an existing one.

You typically wouldnt need to change the ssh (putty) port as few if any ISPs typically block it. Then again, if they do.... as root edit /etc/sshd/sshd_config, change the 'port' value....and also change the iptables firewall values, and also port forward as well.

  • Should we make the boot partition all of the remaining space on our HDD if we plan to use RAMDISK and incremental archives, or create a separate backup partition and edit the directory (and how do we edit the directory)?

  • @GoodCoffeeInc You're welcome to make the boot partition span the entire drive, but it certainly isn't necessary. As with any distrobution, if you want to have a separate partition for your incremental backups, you can do so post-install.

    steps:

post-install, make a filesystem on your spare partition you create

edit the fstab and bindmount over /home/mc/backup to point to your new /dev/sdx

  • What is a ramdisk? is it like a ram partition dedicated to increase minecraft performance? If i have a box with 2gb ram running your os should i select ramdisk size of like 1.5 - 2GB then?

  • @MrBrannfjell ramdisk is just as it sounds: it is a simulated hard disk operating from ram. Since increased hard drive space doesnt add performance to a minecraft server, you wouldnt want to allocate any more than you need to ramdisk, so roughly limit your ramdisk size to some amount larger than you expect the worldfiles to be.

ram allocated to the java heap directly relates to server population capacity. ram allocated to ramdisk directly relates to speed which chunks are sent to the client

  • I'm running this in VirtualBox. I have it all installed and everything. But when I do an ifconfig my inet address is 10.0.2.15. Not TOO weird right? But when I go into Chrome I can't get to the WebUI. Any input?

  • @EthanRakoff In Virtualbox, you want to set your network adapter to 'bridged' rather than 'NAT', which gives the 10.x.x.x IP. bridged gives 192.x.x.x

  • @MineOSadmin I already found that but thanks anyway. I thought it was already at that as default so never thought to check. I did't know that NAT would ALWAYS give the 10.x.x.x.

  • I have a question. I own an Archos 70 running Android. This device CAN run Ubuntu, but I can't get the WiFi to work. That's why I was wondering whether it would be possible to install this OS on there?

  • @bluekillz1994 my apologies. I don't typically follow youtube, rather than the forums and the google groups locations for which i do technical support. Upon looking up archros 70, i see its a tablet. I would pressupose it would not work as I did not include any tablet drivers in the kernel. However, you'd have to determine whether you would want to host minecraft on a tablet to start, which isn't a very suitable server platform..

  • Please help! I'm having trouble installing on a P4 machine. When i boot from optical disk after the modules are loaded a wild error appears:

The CRUX media was not properly mounted!

Spawning a shll for you to attempt ot fix this problem. If you are able to find the correct device, mount it at /.tmpfs/.media and then log out of this shell to continue. If you are NOT able to fix this problem, installation wll not be possable.

This is with both mineos_crux.iso and the 0.4.8 iso both 32-bit

  • @Comoedus I am having the same problem on my P4 machine

  • can u change the ip?

  • @Sumerwrestler89 Check my channel, one video is for setting a static IP in MineOS CRUX.

  • Also is it possible to add other plugins then the one provided? If so. how? I've been wanting to install a anti-creeper explosion bukkit plugin and I can't figure out how.

  • @theprince11088 No plugins are provided by default (just the mods). For help on installing plugins, look at the wiki (in the description) and go to the 'bukkit' page

  • @MineOSadmin

I went to the /home/mc/servers directory, but there is nothing there dispite me already creating a server. Am I missing something or should I just create the directory? Is it because I am using RAMDISK?

  • @theprince11088 on every restart, the home/mc/servers directory is cleared. thats the nature of ramdisk. I've added 'restore on reboot' as an option, but in the meantime, you might consider using MineOS without a ramdisk until you get a feel for how it works

  • What is the login for the extplorer addon?

  • @theprince11088 extplorer uses whatever usernames and passwords exist on your server--they're tied together. So whatever your 'mc' password is will get you in.

  • @MineOSadmin

I already figured it out, but that was not the login. When I put in my mc user and pass it refused it. Then I looked on the their sourceforge and saw the login was admin and pass was admin. Also about the ramdisk issue, even after starting my server the directory does not show up where the world is stored, hence I can't add any plugins.

  • @theprince11088 i apologize, i guess i forgot that it was a admin:admin login...i created the addon on request but havent spent any time on it since, so my memory just failed me. Ill document that in the wiki. As far as the other issue, even after you start up bukkit, even log into it, the plugins directory doesnt exist? though it should be automatic, are you able to create the 'plugins' directory yourself and put the plugin in there?

  • @MineOSadmin

I did, but it seems it did not load.

  • While this may not be the best place to ask a question, i hope you can answer it.

After getting everything working, the one thing i can't do is connect. I can make a server, it says it is done in the console. Everything. But when it comes to joining, I type in the ip (and yes, the correct one), yet it just stays at logging in for a while, and then it tells me End of stream. Any help?

  • when i try to download the .jar files it says downloading, and goes blank and nothing gets downloaded

  • @EternityHacker first thing to try then is downloading the most recent scripts with the 'update mineos' link on the same page. Next, are you using internet explorer (IE JS seems to hate this page)?

Lastly, if you connect via SSH, you can try 'tail /usr/games/minecraft/mineos.log'...it'll tell you what its attempting and what its failing at. drop into the google group (in the desc) for more detailed help

  • My friends get cant get on but i can!!

  • I always get errors in the setup, like "pkgadd: could not write /mnt/var/lib/pkg/lib.incomplete_transacti..." when I try to install on VirtualBox, please help

  • This is great. I've used MineOS on Virtual Machines before, and today i just threw a pc together from spare parts. Great OS easy to use, easy to install. I recommend this for anyone wanting to seriously run a minecraft server.

Also, to the uploader, you should throw up a caption box at 1:10 mentioning that linux treats IDE's, ATA's, and SATA's as sda as well (not just scuzi) the less linux savvy user might get caught up trying to put "sata" or in my case "ide" as the name. =P

  • Thanks for this great tutorial and amazing OS!

  • Mine OS

Yet another reason why I love Linux.

  • when i go to the webui im not asked to log in and i have no console tab. i cant connect to it using just the ip address but it dose work with the :8080 port extension that it tells you to use on the wiki. is this something to do with my browser settings ? if not is their a way of accessing the server console threw the root or mc user using putty ?

  • @merlinhalliday are you sure youre using MineOS CRUX? :8080 is no longer used in CRUX (the original used it)

  • @MineOSadmin it defiantly said CRUX on the setup. i saw the :8080 here minecraft.codeemo.com/buildmineos/index.php/Web_interface have i made a mistake installing it? (i was never asked to make password and username for the webui) or is their another port i should be using ?

    thanks for helping

  • how do i get the internet settings set up if i use the boot disc to reformate everything? and make itself the primary os?

  • hmm, im a little confused. i watched the video about installing mineOS+ and i did that. then i decided to upgrade to this but im still a beginner. the very start of this doesnt really explain much. how do i get to that first screen saying "welcome to the mineOS instalation media"?

  • Please continue with this project and keep this beast alive! You are a very kind person to provide this for free and to everyone, If i wasen't such a bum and actually had money i would defenatly donate :-)

  • Hi, I have only just seeing this video an wanted to know, when will it be ready to install straight to a computer with out the need need of another operating system? we are very interested in setting up our own server to play mincraft through, but do not want to run it virtually, can anyone help???

  • @TheBumblingHunter you can install this on an computer without an OS already on it. Just burn the latest ISO onto a CD or DVD and run the setup how he did in his video.

  • @TheBumblingHunter you can install this onto the computer directly as I say 0:17 seconds. very early, really.

  • how would somebody put mine os onto an already existing Ubuntu server? I already have one running and would love to have mineOS a part of it.

  • Are you not working with the mineOS+ guys to implement this into mineOS+? if not what is the difference between the two distributions?

  • @Martinirams I work completely independently from the MineOS+ team; MineOS CRUX is my own project, which is necessary since we don't necessarily see eye-to-eye on what is priority to develop. From the wiki page in the video description, click GOALS -> MineOS Comparison and you can see a difference table.

  • @MineOSadmin Okay thanks. Wow only 25mb RAM usage, that's impressive! Unfortunately I need hamachi :( But keep up the great work, the new web interface looks great!

  • @Martinirams MineOS+ version 4+ (not developed by this guy) has hamachi support.

  • @MineOSadmin Thanks for all the hard work you have put into this! this is epic!!! keep up the good work! :D

  • When you run VirtualBox for the first time and you configure a Virtual machine what operating system should I choose?

  • @TonyLozada27 Go to the wikipage in the Video description and click on 'virtualbox' instructions at the bottom

  • @MineOSadmin Yeah, I clicked that right after I commented! lol Thanks a bunch for replying so quickly!

  • Hey, can we directly upgrade from the first one? or is this completely different?

  • @supersixty1 This distro is drastically different and would require a fresh install. The archive file you make from MineOS (microcore) will work with this, however....so simply moving your existing world into your new server will reduce your setup time.

  • @MineOSadmin alright thanks! i may do this.... im still thinking about it, it is better to go to this or is it better to just stay with what i got?

  • @supersixty1 MineOS (microcore) had a lot of advantages--but MineOS CRUX unquestionably improves on every single area, from compatibility, to maximizing ram, to easier setup, to a more informative and intelligent web-ui. I heartily recommend this. But if you still have your reservations, set this up on a VM and see how much it has improved and simplified.

  • What exactly is i686 hardware? I know most desktops are like amd x64 or something

  • @rocktheworld2k6 i686 constitutes as after i586, such as the first-gen pentiums. The rule of thumb is: If it is a modern enough processor to run Minecraft + Java, it is modern enough to work on MineOS CRUX.

  • @MineOSadmin Ah, cause when i was looking up some linux distro, can't remember which, it had i686 and amdx64

  • @rocktheworld2k6 They may have had i386 and AMD64, which would be the Pentium generation and the 64-bit amd generation, respectively. In this case MineOS handles i686 (AMD64/x86_64) alike.
