  • It was available from Amazon, haven't checked recently. I got a copy of it from my local library, worth a look.

  • Where can I get this DVD?

  • Some great performances, the only thing that spoilt it for me was that girls looked more like Bett Midlers younger sisters than virginal English maidens.

  • @Roseburg93 :O))

  • This is just absolutely wonderful! Thanks for sharing it!

  • BLOW LINDA BLOW!!!

  • mmm linda rondstatd

  • I love the look of almost disgusted resignation on Frederick's face when Mabel starts doing her little stacatto bit again.

  • Lukas Pirate, this is better than the 83 filmed version. I saw this production in the theater, and the energy is so much higher. I'm going to have to buy this DVD so that I can get the dialog between some of the songs... I hadn't seen the theatrical version since my friends took me to this show for my 21st birthday. I'm impressed how much of the choreography was transferred to the film - shame they cut so many of the song verses.

  • What a strange order for the curtain call... Pirate King then Ruth then Mabel/Frederic THEN General Stanley?

  • Because the Major General has seniority, I think.

  • The curtain call here is in order of the actors' status, not the character's presence. At the time of this performance, Linda Rondstadt was not known in the theatre, and Kevin Kline was practically just out of Juliard, but George Rose was a theatre legend. He was the "headliner" in this cast.

  • I remember-when Kevin Kline was giving thanks for his Tony Award,he added thanks to Raul Julia for NOT being able to do the show ! Had Mr Julia done the show-and hed have been great-,would we know the glory of Kevin Kline?

  • shauninfl28 is partly right, in that Kevin Kline had not achieved the star status he had three years later to clench top billing in the film; but in the original Savoy Opera production, the King was never considered the star; Major General Stanley was the lead because he represented the class system that Gilbert and Sullivan were so viciously satirizing. Nowadays, partly due to Kevin's contribution, but partly because of reexamination, the King and the General are seen as equal leads.

  • Curtain calls are often done based on the fame of the actors. At this stage, Rex Smith and particularly Linda Ronstadt (as Pirates was her Broadway debut) were nobodies when compared to the likes of George Rose.

  • That shouldn't happen, it shouldnt be about who is known and not known, but their performances. Pfft.

  • In that case, Tony Azito should have gotten the last bow. ;-)

  • I mean more it should be done in character order, ie Mabel and Frederick are the leads, Pirate King, General Stanley and Police Sergent are supporting characters, then highlighted daughters and Samuel (etc)

  • @SingularSuperNinja LOL!! George WHO?? Linda Ronstadt was THE most famous female singer of the decade in the 1970's, toured Europe, was on the covers of numerous nat'l magazines, & had already sold many millions of albums when this was done (early 80s). I repeat-& no disrespect intended-WHO was George Rose? Never heard of him. He may have been big in elite theatre circles, but not to a majority of Americans. The play wouldn't have drawn NEARLY the crowds it did w/out her! I saw it twice-for HER!

  • So now you have done the 1980 version, Can you

do the the real 1983 version?
