  • ...not as sad as the end of The Plague Dogs though! That film left me in tatters. Why was Martin Rosen not allowed to make more animated films is ridiculous.

  • @TheSpecialGuestStars Yeah it's a shame how hardly anyone knows Plague Dogs. The story, animation and atmosphere really deserved the same amount of attention.

  • i love this film so much, i just had to buy it in hmv last week .3.

  • No matter how hard I try, this song always makes me tear up. It's that beautiful. Thanks for posting.

  • Part of this song played in Wallace and Gromit: The Curse of the Were-Rabbit. They were originally gonna play all of this song for a scene where Gromit was sadly walking home, believing that Wallace was dead. Just hearing this song makes me wish they could've done this.

  • one of my very first memories of my entire life is watching this film.... and i found it beautiful from the very first moment...... still do...*tear drops*

  • Damn, my tough guy image is in tatters right now.

  • Watership down is one of my favourite films. ever.

  • Damn onions...

  • One of the saddest if not the saddest things ive ever seen in my whole life. Always brings a tear to my eye, great song and great film. Thanks for posting :)

  • no, i'm not crying right now...

  • Oh I think I see Hazle soon. I don't think he's dead either, he's out there somwhere, in the meadows, Becaus eI saw the movie and the bird i think plucks the shot gun bolts out and they find Hazle.

  • If only in 2011 cartoons would had half the quality of this masterpiece!

  • It's funny that I didn't understand how scary this is when I was 8. : _ :

  • I always cry at this part in the film :'(

  • best movie ever

  • who the hell were the 6 people who disliked whoever you are you have no heart no soul and probabably a terrible taste in music to evryone else Merry Christmas have a good one

  • "Hazel's not dead"

  • i love this movie :)

  • ah~ i adore this movie.. the first time I saw it I was 6 or so.. yup.. scared the crap out of me.

then I watched it when I was 20 and fell in love :)

  • :'') thanx for posting. I'm reading this book right now. I barely remember watching this as a kid, but it def left a lasting impression! Iv been trying to find the whole movie, is LOVE 2 c it again!

  • Entire movie is an exceptional work of art.

  • Fiver is so cute :'(

  • terrifying. don't show this to your children please

  • I only have a very hazy memory of watching this as a child and bawling upon seeing this scene then. I can't even remember the plot. So I happened by this video now and and crying as I type!

    WOW ... just ... WOW!

  • Screw disney

    this is the real thing!!!

  • i'm singing this for my Singing Exam :)

  • @rachaelallen14 and @hamishducat

    Good luck you two! :)

  • Beautiful

  • Beautiful song.

Am singing it for my exam today!

  • @hamishducat Hope it went well its a lovely song by a great singer

  • Thanks I got distinction ( : !!!!!!!!!

  • @Promoagent Glad to hear you did ok

  • Pixar would be proud of this. Superb animation, great song. Makes a grown man sad.

  • General Woundwort, Vervain, Chervil, Cowslip and Toadflax have all made youtube accounts to dislike this video

  • @Japanesebanzai52 Campion Too!

  • @Beautymoon1000 I left out Campion bcoz in the book Bigwig and Hazel like Campion bcoz hes a brave and skilled fighter and a loyal captiain of owsla and at the end he becomes chief of efrafa and agrees to let watership down and efrafa coexist in peace so he's kind of an anti hero

  • This is like Kryptonite

  • Sad bunnies mummy!

  • It's hard to comprehend Garfunkel's "not liking" the song. He was reputed not to have liked "Bridge Over Troubled Water" as well. Hmm. Can't say much for his judgement?

Sounds like "Songwriter's Jealousy" to me.

What a beautiful song about Death, in all its manifestation, mystery, and finality. I'd never heard it before clicking on a related video. This movie wasn't big in the US.

  • The best movie there was and there is. All times.

  • The ability for such small things to make you want to bawl your eyes out and cry like a baby...

  • I think this is the best version of the song. Art Garfunkel's voice is beautiful on it, inspite of the fact he apparently didn't even like the song. His single release was a tad cheesy, but here with the film score intertwined..?

    Spine tingles EVERY tine.

  • @winterjargon I agree. In fact I've almost grown to hate the single.

  • @winterjargon I think it's beauty bothered him, how others would judge it.When you share something this deep from you, you will be found a little wary, well some artists.

  • @winterjargon Completely agreed. Angela Morley's score for this film is brilliant, and this version of "Bright Eyes" is by far the best. And the introductory sequence is superb too: when Dandelion and Blackberry look at each other at 0:50 ... wow.

  • "It's a beautiful movie. Don't make my mistake of watching it before going to bed. You won't sleep. You will just lie there and think. A lot."

Haha I made that mistake. And that's exactly what I did. And it was a school night.

  • And how his view is distorted with pain because mine was as well when I lost him. It was the worst loss of my life. That's why this scene means so much to me.

  • This scene means a lot to me, because this is how I reacted when I lost my childhood friend, and cousin. We grew up and played together all the time, and in the scenes I feel like I'm fiver, chasing after the black rabbit (my cousins ghost) and I'm trying to chase him because when I found out I was crying running far away. The scenes of the two rabbits chasing each-other is my cousin and and I playing, I'm chasing him because I don't want him to go as his ghost is floating over us playing.

  • This song is like Kryptonite

  • Love this old style of animation, where it looks like a moving painting. Although, when I realize the cartoons I watched as a kid...Watership Down, Land Before Time, and The Brave Little Toaster...it's no wonder I have a heavy outlook on life now haha

  • This Movie is so wonderful and sad, i just love it :D I have it on DVD but i think this movie is NOT for Kids. Its very scary and brutal i think ;) Btw i love these song. It makes me cry...(Greetings from germay and i hope my english is okay)

  • man I wept like a child when I watched this as, er, a child. Amazing stuff.

  • That is a hard core children's movie. They don't make them like that anymore.

  • Im 14 nerally and i still cry at this film :(

  • Excellent. I can't even watch it because I know what to expect. Thanks...sniff, sniff...

  • The movie is messed up but amazing.

  • messed up film but amazing animation and song

  • best animation they don't make them like this anymore ... story from the hearth with beautiful sung by art garfunkel .... top notch

  • Oh my god... I was listening to bleach I put this on and it looked like in the beginning Fiver were saying Ichi's line and one of the others his dad... O.o PERFECT lip syncing...

  • @TheGoldenGriffiness YOu would dare compare this to THAT? Its good, but this shouldnt be anywhere near Watership Down.

  • @Milomia9

No- they're COMPLEATLY incompatable, It was just a strange twist of fate that I find amusing, its BECAUSE they're so incapatable I find it funny.

  • Beautiful movie...one of an all time classic...Very sad, But lovley storyline.

  • ...i didn't cry....or sniff...or anything...

  • Marley and Me? Boy in the striped Pajamas? Pah. A mere sniffle compared to what this scene does to you.

  • I just heard another version of this song and immediately thought of Watership Down...a movie I haven't seen in about 15 years. I should watch the whole thing now

  • idk y but this really scares me especially the black rabbit thingy

  • @carnagevenom120 lol yeah the general bunny scared the hell out of me when i watched this when i was 5

  • @thefieryfury Gah, Salad Fingers is creepy DX I don't know why people think Watership Down is disturbing though. Great film. Brilliant book.

  • I remember weeping when I first saw this scene in the movie. Admit it, you did too.

  • Haven.t seen this, but judging from the look of it.

Looks really good, the athmosphere, the art style.

And the animation looks fantastic, nothing compares a good old drawings with computer in my opinion :D

  • Omg , that is a song that Means something , not just dancing people ;c

It makes me cry every time i see this x

  • Played this at my mum's service. R.I.P mum. Miss you loads.

  • @dazzac46 God bless you. I'm not a believer, but I couldn't fathom the loss. She's watching down on you now.

  • @dazzac46 RIP

  • @dazzac46 I was going to have this at my mum's service but my best friend's mum was there and this was at my best friend's service a year prior and we didn't want to upset her mum too much in one day so we picked Somewhere Over the Rainbow by Eva Cassidy and some others instead. :)

  • this saddened me so much as a kid, but I like to think it helped to make me the person I am today who fights against animal abuse and cruelty

  • my rabbit dies today, i'd had her 10 years and i'm heart broken

  • @raychibabe Hi Raych, remember the line- 'Hazels not dead' - they are up there somewhere and now they are at peace. I lost my cat yesterday and I am devastated. I hope your pain goes but the memory of your friend remains x x

  • it makes me cry everytime x

  • This is my one of my 3 favourite films of all time, (I'm currently looking for the book). I once watched this 5 times in a row.

  • @WaddleDeeDoo the audio book of this is also amazing if you cant get a copy of the book try finding the audio unabridged edition only

i hate it when great storys are abridged they cut toooo much out

sorry i spelt some of that wrong

  • This makes me feel so sad :(

Even thought it is meant to be a representation of human life, there is something so innocent about animals, especially flight creatures like rabbits.

Always brings a tear to my eye.

  • @TashesxD a representation of human life that hits home in a big way when you think about it

  • ppl say that this movie is disturbing...

well i'm a twleve yr old girl that's

paranoid of salad & i love this movie!!!!

not the least bit disturbing to me!!

  • @thefieryfury I'm 12 too,the blood disturbs me ad thats all,I am a tomboy so I like gore a little. Great movie.

  • @2002tiif i'm tom boy 2.by salad i meant salad fingers.

    but i loove watership down!!

  • This song reminds me so strongly of the death of my horse. Suddendly the light in his eyes was gone, she seemed tired and he almost seemed to be waiting. He died peacfully in his best years . Rest In Peace Lindos, my companion for 6 wonderful years <3

  • When I was nine I was in the hospital and almost died... my mother said during that time she'd hear this song, think of me and cry.

My Mom died in 2008... now when I hear this song I think of her and cry.

  • @ahrimanes You are brave and worthy to return to this song and face your heart. Bless you and your mother.

  • @ahrimanes

How beautifully said, sorry to hear about your mom. There is nothing stronger in this world than motherly love.

  • this is awsome.

  • wow - now it's about 20 years when I've seen the film first. I'm 26 now but still cry like a child... This film is sooo awfull!

  • While I know that this song is supposed to break my heart, I don't cry. Does that make me a bad person?

  • @RaineSageRocks No. You simply don't feel the need. It's not abnormal.

  • Hazel is fucking awesome.

  • currenlty reading the book.

  • I dont get what makes everyone so emotional about this song? Its a good song if youre into it, but personally, i just dont get it.

  • Ohhhhhhhhhhh I'm welling up just listening to this. Boy it can touch the heartstrings...

"My heart has joined the Thousand, for my friend stopped running today. "

  • This song takes me back. It now sets the scene for preparing my shot bunnys for the pot

  • I dare any nutless corporate hack to try and do something even remotely like this film today.

  • The animated films back in the old days are so different from most modern animated films. To me it feels like artists forgot how to enchant the viewers, relying too much on cheap comedy and computer enhanced graphics.

The animated films that recently became popular are exceptions and clearly display the love to the genre of storytelling in all facets.

  • Owh hell. This song brings back all my painful memories of loss, hurt and death. The fact that a real friend never lets go of another just touches me deep.

  • WTF... people are getting all emotional and nostalgic?? This movie is good but seriously fucked up if you watch it as an innocent little kid expecting cute fluffy bunnies. It was like god said to me... "BAM HERE'S LIFE FOR YOU MOTHAFUCKA"

  • Disney, Don Bluth, you will always hold a special place in my heart, but you jist can't compare to Watership Down. Best Animated movie ever!!!

  • 25 years later this movie still haunts me.

  • One of THE BEST. Look at that animation. No computers, boys & girls... xo

  • @nessamaine I read that each frame was done completely by hand

  • I break when Fiver says "Hazel's not dead" showing that he will not give up on a friend.

  • My eyes are watery... :')

  • 1:20 Oh Fiver, I told you not to eat that kind of silflay XD

  • Great memorable moments in life are im afraid so beautiful that they scar the mind with their presence....

  • Cry, yes. But tears of joy, as well as sorrow. There can be no true joy without sorrow. Too many people forget that.

  • the soundtrack in this film is emmence

  • Wat a film. Saw this for the 1st time wen i was like 10. So sad, but so great

  • I don't see why this is so sad: (I read the book in 1978, and saw the film in May 1979) -Hazel is not dead, and it is Fiver who has these visions, knowing where to look for where to find him: Hazel is hurt, and lying in a ditch inside a pipeline, and Fiver, being the clairvoyant 'bright eyes', finds him and brings him home :)

  • i'll always had to cry when i see this part of the movie with the song

  • This films so sadd.. dont see how its a kids film tho;/<3

  • @MissBlondielishas It's for older children, for the most part.

  • ahh this scene :)

  • Im 23 now and watched it first when i was 4! loved it and horrified by it ever since.

  • Dammit, I'm a 22 year old bloke and still cry like a child when I see this...

  • @Pheenixz i'm 32 and I always used to be a crying wreck at this scene, the mixture of realising what was happening, the imagery and the music just got to me each time...I used to forward this part after a while:)

  • @Pheenixz so what if you're a bloke crying is human

  • @Pheenixz lol

im 25 and i still cry to this such a deep and moving film

    them days wer so great

  • Whenever I hear this song I have to cry so bad....I've seen the film when I was 4 years old and it was so burned into my brain its terrible...

  • @AngelMadokaLuchia ...but it is beautiful... you are alive...enjoy the times. best wishes.

  • @Pheenixz like wise but i',m still 28 ;-)

  • 5 people are clearly twats

  • I've never even heard of this movie before. And I bet no one would even be able to guess how I found out about it. Besides that though, this does look pretty interesting..I think I might watch it some day.

  • 23 now and still getting goosebumps upon watching this

  • 23 now and still getting goosebumps

  • This first time I saw this movie I was about 7 years old. I'm 35 now and its still one of my favorite movies of all time and this song still brings tears to my eyes.

  • This is in my opinion, the best animated movie ever. Disney will always have a special place in my heart, but no disney movie has anything on this movie. The only other movie I think can compete with watership down is the Plague Dogs, incidentaly, both movies were made by the same team of people, and Had JOHN HURT!!!!

  • goosh i love this movie though it's so sad and brutal, when i was younger I used to watch it all the time!!!

  • beautiful. xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx

  • This song still brings me to tears, one of the best scenes in any movie, ever.

  • @macavity1981 couldn't agree more

  • i love this movie i remember the first time i saw it i think i was 3 or 4 and there wasnt a part in the movie that i dident cry about but, i did sleep after it, ive never had nightmares after watching a movie but i did cry my self to sleep, i do every time even now and im turning 15.

  • I love this movie... Even if it came out many years before I was born. I love Art Garfunkel. He is one of my hero's <3

  • I read the book at primary school and saw the movie too. This song was number one in the charts for weeks

  • Oh, Christ, this song kills me. I can't watch it without getting choked up. Get this- I saw this scene first out of context with the rest of the film, and I STILL wept like a child.

  • Thanks and hugs for the Video, just sheer beautiful. Great movie, fantastic book, lovely song. Forever.

  • I remember seeing this as a kid and being so mysteriously drawn to it. It was so dark and chilling, but yet so simple and beautiful. I would go to the public library with my Mom and pick out this movie over and over again...

  • @drmplaya34 i know its very eerie and it taught me about death and sadness when i was 3 or 4, made me cry a lot. Very sad, but amazing. It was especially weird and wonderful at the start. And the bits when u see the blood dripping out and down from the moon, very strange. Was it intended for kids? surely not tho. Bit upsetting this film xx

  • I always get this weird feeling inside of my heart while I'm listening to this beautiful song... it's the most beautiful song on earth...I promise! ♥

  • Oh that remember me of my childhood :)

Good, old times... will never come back..

  • Poor Fiver. =(

  • wow this brings back alot of memories i rember this as a kid and it still makes my eyes water.

  • @zizeff I was this as a kid too, and it still makes my eyes watership down

  • It is the greatest film adaption ever made It's completely terrifying and beautiful.

  • :') this is a lovely and moving film i will love it for ever!!!!!!!

  • This film teaches us the matter of life and death but when I was like 6 I watched this film and I was so scared I was scared to go into the back garden on my own,

  • this is art. Sad art

  • Haven't seen ths movie and only this scene makes me tear-eyed.

  • It's Art Garfunkel's ghostly, echoing singing that is the most tear-welling part of this in my opinion.

  • the phrase: "how can a light burn so brightly, suddenly grow so pale" is on my cousins tombstone after he died of cot death

  • @robrhlphotographylee its burn so pale

  • this bit always gives me the creeps...

  • Is anyone else's on the left side of the screen?

  • Der Film ist wundervoll♥

als kleines Kind fand ich diesen Film schon sehr schön, aber jetzt ist er noch 1000Mal besser!♥

  • I remeber watching this when I was little and it made me cry my heart out if I remember correctly and I wouldn't let my rabbit out of my sight for weeks lol nd wenever i watch it now I still cry

  • playing this for Leigh Bowery (my transvestite guardian angel)

  • When i was younger, i loved the Watership Down series. But sometimes i was pretty scared. There was the rabbitt with his creepy eye..Couldn't get it out of my mind.

  • The first film i ever saw at the cinema when i was 7. Still my favourite even now.

  • my FAVE movie of all time gotta LOVE Bigwig & Fiver

  • This movie is like the real human's world. You never get tired of it coz it reflects how human's can act & feel in the real world.

  • I think kids should defiantly see this but defiantly not Felidae. Thats a bit too much.

  • @Bloodshotshatterbone No doubt. o3o I adore Felidae but it left me scared! D:

  • Dont let the animation fool you. This is a DARK movie. Brillient but DARK.
