Really soft rubber (compared to a 1:1 bike) helps grip in the wet.You can find these at the UK rc bike specialist Formby models.

where do the people controlling them stand? i imagine they have to be in the middle or on fairly high ground to see their bike at all times?

yeah there is a drivers stand usually about two stories high. I had a chance to try one of these things out and they are really hard to get going!
