  • Tsujii where I seem to be drawn into an animation for a delicate piano keyboard performance is the music that the Chopin piano concerto impressed by likes piano concertos among me most

  • I think he has something to gets audience.

  • Nobuyuki has mastered another concerto -- Tchaikovsky's No. 1. Take a listen to his performance with the BBC Philharmonic on BBC3, available for 7 days starting Jan. 13, 2011. This remarkable artist does know how to make a piano come to life.

  • Difficult to imagine how he learns a piece in the first place; does he start with a braille type score? - that would be awfully slow you would think as he would have to use his fingers to read the score! Or perhaps he somehow learns the whole thing first before going near a piano? Or is his musical brain so good that - like Mozart - he can picture the score on hearing a piece played?

  • @lsbrother

    >Difficult to imagine how he learns a piece in the first place; does he start with a braille type score? -

This is a frequently asked question - I have a FAQ that includes that on my "nobufans" site. Google that word and the first link will get you to my site.

  • @mlliu2006

Thanks for that - interesting. It sounds an incredibly laborious process - other pianists record each hand separately along with voice instructions as to the score markings - forte, pedal etc etc. Then he has to listen to the tapes - bit by bit presumably - and memorise and try it out at same time. I don't think many people would have the patience - but I suppose he has no choice.

Isn't possible these days to convert a score into a MIDI recording and a digital piano play it?

  • @lsbrother

    >interesting. It sounds an incredibly laborious process

It is. But Nobuyuki Tsujii is magical :-) He says he can learn a new concerto in one month while practicing the rest of repertoire. But then his close fan, Conductor Yutaka Sado said it took him 10 times to learn Rachmaninoff 2 compared to other people.

  • I am now convinced that this performance will go down as one of the greatest. I had not realized that Chopin's concertos are not that highly regarded, and only now understand just how good Nobu has brought out the best in this work. As somebody pointed out, Nobuyuki's play has soul - I now get that after having listened to this piece on CD repeatedly. And, having listened to other performances, including that of the winner of this year's Chopin Competition: I say this **IS** the best.

  • I agree that this performance is probably the best among all the memorable performances of Nobuyuki Tsujii at the Cliburn. Couple things: 1. The webcast on the Cliburn site still has this performance in its entirety - I checked with the Cliburn people and they said it will be there indefinitely.. 2. This concerto is included in a CD titled "Nobuyuki Tsujii: Chopin", available at amazon, and iTune. Tsujii is the only winner who has a CD other than his winners CD and recitals CD.

  • He has awkard mannerisms, but when he settles down at the piano, he enters his true element and becomes as graceful as a swan.

  • @piwanabongo I think his mannerisms are him trying to visualise up and down the key board.

  • Incredible performance - thanks for sharing his gift with us!

  • This is indescribable...it reaches out and touches your heartstrings..

  • I really admire how much work he put into this. Being blind, you have to put 100 times more effort, dedication, and practice time than normal people to achieve this kind of success. This is pure amazing!

  • It's no wonder at all that he won the Van Cliburn Competition

  • Graet Job !! =)

  • Nobuyuki plays the melancholy passages w. such heart-rending beauty - its very touching - and the interaction between the pianist and orchestra is just perfectly balanced...

  • he accomplished miracles!!!

    amazing, BRAVO!!!

  • Perfect !!!! This is the WAY to play this Piano Concerto. Perfect !!!!
