Mostly culture. The culture of a people who have lived on the edge of starvation for so long do not develope with values consistant with most of the world. A society where bribes, corruption as well as living under a Stalinist regime create a different view of life that is not erased in six months, or 60 months. It would be several generations before there value system changed.
Its a nice thought that people who grow up as animals can quickly overcome it with 'more information'. You would have to assume the way they recieve and process what they hear is the same as ours. It isn't. Values that we hold as absolutes in our society, such as honesty, truth, lieing, etc. do not exist in their thinking. They are concepts that have never existed for them. You cannot change that in 'a few years' by giving them more information.
As I stated before, China and South Korea are the two countries most in danger should NK collapse. As such they keep the country alive (barely), hoping after Kim Jong Il dies things will slowly change for the better. In the mean time its wait and see.
Perhaps a good analogy would be people who are sent to prison in the US when young and released 50 years later. Even though they get outside information most have a very difficult time adjusting. Now take it to the point of being born in prison with guards and people issuing rules that everyone 'must' obey. Bribes, corruption, special favors, gifts to the guards are the only way to survive. Now let these people out of prison after they spent their entire life, and see how they behave.
To me the best that could happen would be after Kim Jong Il dies (hopefully soon) the new leadership in NK open trade and commerce with both China and South Korea, gradually relaxing the 'rules' and resrtrictions. Allow food shipments and establish a freer country. No one starves, goes to prison, or dies and the country thrives. China and SK would welcome the chance to do business. It would be a good way for NKs people to learn the rules the rest of the world lives by.
The problems in N Korea are not because they' don't 'know' the rules 'the world lives by'' but that they have independent aspirations and refuse ,after 60 years of screw tightening by the USA & others to say 'uncle'.

The NK military has fallen on very hard times with no money for repairs and even less for fuel for training. Most troops are used to harvest the crop rather than training as they should. This is not new or recent but has now been going on for 20 or so years.

Mostly culture. The culture of a people who have lived on the edge of starvation for so long do not develope with values consistant with most of the world. A society where bribes, corruption as well as living under a Stalinist regime create a different view of life that is not erased in six months, or 60 months. It would be several generations before there value system changed.

Its a nice thought that people who grow up as animals can quickly overcome it with 'more information'. You would have to assume the way they recieve and process what they hear is the same as ours. It isn't. Values that we hold as absolutes in our society, such as honesty, truth, lieing, etc. do not exist in their thinking. They are concepts that have never existed for them. You cannot change that in 'a few years' by giving them more information.

As I stated before, China and South Korea are the two countries most in danger should NK collapse. As such they keep the country alive (barely), hoping after Kim Jong Il dies things will slowly change for the better. In the mean time its wait and see.

Perhaps a good analogy would be people who are sent to prison in the US when young and released 50 years later. Even though they get outside information most have a very difficult time adjusting. Now take it to the point of being born in prison with guards and people issuing rules that everyone 'must' obey. Bribes, corruption, special favors, gifts to the guards are the only way to survive. Now let these people out of prison after they spent their entire life, and see how they behave.

To me the best that could happen would be after Kim Jong Il dies (hopefully soon) the new leadership in NK open trade and commerce with both China and South Korea, gradually relaxing the 'rules' and resrtrictions. Allow food shipments and establish a freer country. No one starves, goes to prison, or dies and the country thrives. China and SK would welcome the chance to do business. It would be a good way for NKs people to learn the rules the rest of the world lives by.

well that looked like a real festive event, now didn't it. Lots of snow, marching, fist pumping & shouting in unison. I think the revelers were asking where their hats had been taken. And that uplifting speech, made me want to sing the North Korean anthem, Papa ooh, Mao Mao. I couldn't think of one for Kim Jong, so I kind of misappropriated the Chineses. Red flag waving, a real party pleaser, especially on New Years Eve. Kim, said it was too cold for this nonsense & Happy New Years.

The NK military has fallen on very hard times with no money for repairs and even less for fuel for training. Most troops are used to harvest the crop rather than training as they should. This is not new or recent but has now been going on for 20 or so years.
The issue is not 'invading' NK, its containing it as both South Korea and China see a collapse of the North as a human disaster, with refuges spilling into both.
