Zito still has the best 12-6 curve to this day....but it was even nastier back then.. today its around 68-71 mph...pretty slow but its still a HUGEEE break like 3 ft above the hitter head....but Remember, the harder you throw, the sharper your pitches..back then he threw it at about 74-77 mph at the same height (3 ft above the hitters head)..but that velocity gave it that sharper effect, Like it hit a wall and just dropped Effect.....Like it LITERALLY dropped of a real table effect. so nasty.
With the A's, he was allowed to stretch out his arm via long toss. The Giants haven't allowed this. You may have also noticed his velocity dropped for a while there.
@superj8523 sorry i cant come to like someone who has play mediocre at best getting payed 18 mil a year..his ERA with the giants is 4.46 hmmmm...oh his era was actually 4.15 in september so uhh yeah I win
When I was at spring training like 5 years ago, I saw him throw a curveball that looked like it literally dropped off a table. Yeah he has had a lot of trouble lately.
Zito sucks balls this year.....Might as well just let the game start in the 4th inning with the other team up 6-0 and have someone else come in to pitch. At least he can strum a guitar I guess....
You should look back to his years in oakland, he was known for his incredible curve, look hes still getting used to the National league, you should see the other pitchers that are just like him, justin verlander, joe blanton, they're both great elite pitchers with terrible records, you need to give him another year to adjust, and also take the fact that Zito pitches much better in the second half of the year into consideration.
also, hes 3-4 on the road, 0-7 at home, you should know that the Giants have the worst home record in baseball, mostly because of their terrible offense at home, you know being a pitchers park. Which leads to the lack of run support he recieves, now if he pitched at candlestick, he would have so much support he can give up as many runs and still get the win. Look at Oakland, thats a great team, Zito had lots of run support there, you need to give him a chance he will turn around.
If he played at Candlestick his Era and WHIP would be even more embarassing. The problem with Zito is that his fastball is even softer then it was in Oakland and he cant throw his curve or any of his other pitches for strikes. Hitters are sitting back and waiting for him to fall behind 2-1, 3-1 and then just teeing off on his fastball. Also, if Giants stadium is a pitchers park....and Zito is giving up tons of runs there...I would see this as a great reason to sound the alarm and worry.
the reason zito sucks now is cause his fastball can barely touch 85 and he doesnt have a greg maddux type command. His curve is still good, but you cant throw your curve all the time.
i don't think it's that he has to get used to the NL. when he was in oakland, people weren't used to his curveball...and let's face it, when he's on his game, he's got a hell of a curveball. but he's almost been in the majors for 9 years and his curveball doesn't surprise hitters the way it used to. personally, i'm rooting for the guy, and not just b/c i'm a giants fan, but b/c i know what he's capable of...and he's shown it a few times this season. he just needs to work on consistency.
thing is though, zito still hasnt gotten adapted to the natinoal league rule of pitchers hit hes a good pitcher,he just hasnt found his form in sf yet and another reason why hes struggling is because unlike in oakland, zitos not getting any run support in sf
look at greg maddux or jamie moyer, both sit low to mid 80's but are extremely effective because they have great command of every pitch. once zito can figure out his control issues and how to add and subtract from his fastball we will begin to see the great pitcher he used to be.
his struggles are not necessarily because of his loss of velo. its the fact that he can't pin point his fastball. if you can command the fastball, you will get hitters out because it sets up every other pitch. he doesnt throw hard enough to make mistakes up or over the middle of the plate, and thats exactly whats happening. matt cain or lincecum can leave a pitch up once in a while and get away with it becasue they throw so hard.
Zito certainly has a great curve but his struggles in 2007 have mostly to do with the dramatic loss of velocity in his fastball. He's in the mid-80's - that's nothing! This allows the hitters to sit on his curve because he can't throw the fastball by them if they guess wrong.
I personally think his velocity is down for a variety of reasons. I noticed a change in mechanics in 2008 from what he had when he was in Oakland, and another thing I think he gained some weight. Remember, you dont gain velocity as you get older, you start to lose it so if his arm actually gained some weight, well guess what... hes gonna lose some of that velocity. Added arm weight due to overall weight gain will decrease arm speed= lose velocity.
because he doesn't have any run support, just like matt cain, no run support, same for the rest of the giants pitching staff. they honestly have one of the best staffs in the league but their offense sucks.
Nice dude i was there that game, i saw him pitchin when i was passing through the bleachers, haha what i want to know is who the fuck are the sippy cups that shit was lame lol
Two best 12-6 curves I've seen are both from ex- Orioles....Ben McDonald and...Oh man!!!!...Greg Olson's was sick!!!!!

The only reason Zito is in a constant slump is because he sucks.
tea3101 2 years ago
he's 3-0 in his last 3 starts, giving up 4 runs in 19 innings. if that sucks, then he can suck all year long.

The reason Barry Zito is in a slump right now is because his curveballs curve too much and hit him in the face.
CarsonDaily 3 years ago
The reason why Barry Zito is slumping is because your gay.
scarface910 3 years ago
Come on, If he keeps on hitting himself in the face with his curve ball, Then -
1: How can he ever strike anyone out?
2: All his pitches will be balls and he will walk every batter.
3: He injures/embarassses himself in the process.
How can he even be allowed to pitch in the Major Leagues with a pitch like that?
CarsonDaily 3 years ago
