Hehe I see that whe share same taste in knives... first the idun, then the SK5... I also did fight for having a "first prod" one... and got it! Outstanding knife and performer.
@daxmeup i got this knife for $159.99 Canadian. i was going to wait for the ESEE 4 Stainless to come out but decided do get this while i wait. it's such a Good knife i almost forgot about how bad i want that Stainless rc4...lol
I am glad u scored on the 1st run of the BB! I hope that it performs extremely well. Perhaps that will shift my initial impression into a more positive light. I am sorry to say it, but it looks a bit underwhelming to me. :( I mean no dis. to U, Paul, or any other owners/fans of this blade. My eye just hasn't been able to make a connection with what I am sure is an excellent piece of gear.
Love my blackbird...It arrived in the mail Wednesday after Thanksgiving. That is super fast shipping from Paul. He always takes care of his customers and is a great guy.
I haven't put mine totally through its paces, but when it can throw sparks from a ferro rod that that are amazing. I was shocked when I did it. I've never had a knife that came close to that. This a testimony to the high carbon steel in the knife.
I was lucky enough to get one of the first 100 as well. Cant wait for Paul to make a leather sheath for it. I need to make time to hit the woods and try this baby out.
Great review! I really wanted to get in on that first production run but couldnt afford it. Ill get my hands on one eventually. Seems like Paul put alot of work into the design. My dad is a custom knife maker and I asked him what he thought about the Blackbird. His only response was "its a very parctical design."
That point design looks like it's indestructible. The problem with a lot of drop point designs is that they are physically weak and can break off from batoning or dropping it on a hard surface. If your knife is missing its point, it's more dangerous to use and its functionality is compromised. No point means you can't stick it in a piece of wood to hold it or make any kind of pierce cuts.
Just wow, i want one! great vid cheers for the heads up on it, one very sweet looking blade, looking forward to the field tests, best wishes and take care.
Loving all these knife reviews, but I'm chomping at the bit to see some field tests. You've been a wealth of information and I truly appreciate everything you're doing. Great honest approach.
154CM or SK5 steel? I like the handle very much, but am not impressed by the blade. This is just my opinion but i think that thin blades are better for fighting knives, most likely for an intense martial-arts-like knive fight with rapid movements requireing a light sharp blade. In the woods i prefer a heavy blade that can save my energy.
@blueboy210 No, i don't prefer a coated blade - it soon looses its good appearance. About the heavier knives it's all physics - if you lack a mass you'll have to use extra force.
Wow Awesome Blade! I am new to youre channel I subbed and really enjoying you vids keep them up a Survivalist in Training! I have a question mike what you think of the bear grylls ultimate survival knife? Im thinking of getting a Bk2 or Seal Pup not sure what to get as a good and well priced survival knife! Thank You!
@Hordesthugz13 The BK2 is the best option! Call me a caveman, but i've heard of Bear Gryll yesterday (he does some cool, but stupid and insane things) and seen his Gerber knife right now because of you. It's made to take your money - that's an old model renamed and with some useless or at least not very high-end gadgets included. I can only guess how much it costs. Oh, just to add that a serrated blade isn't the best option for a bushcraft knife.
@Hordesthugz13 The BK2 is a great knife, but on the weighty side. I really like my Tom Brown Jr. Scout. Also, a Mora knife would be great if you are new to bushcraft. They are cheap (less than $20 on ebay), light, and can take a beating.
I was also able to field test this blade at the last E2E training event. I used this blade for multiple chores ranging from carving triggers for snares, to battoning fire wood. I was very impressed with the knife's ability to perform a large range of tasks. In my opinion, a good survival knife should allways be a comprimise between large work horses, and smaller light carving knives. This knife bridged that gap wonderfully. Time tested blade and handle shapes. Looking forward to the test video.
That is one fine blade! Wish I could have gotten my paws on a first production run! Adam, I can't believe you would consider making that a safe queen! That's like locking Ace up because he is 1 of 100 amazing GSD's!!! How could you do such a thing! :) Looking forward to the testing series
this might be a stupid question but is 154cm the same thing as CPM 154 ?

@kaziklu79 If you think a heavy blade will save your energy you probably think a coated blade will too.
