I was 9 and my sister was 7 when we joined our local library. We had neighbours across the street, two sisters, one was married the other a "Spinster". Spinster and Librarian sort of went hand in hand long ago. Nancy the Librarian, she would put her finger up to her lips and mouth the words - No talking. We used to sit with our friends, read our books, giggle, but we were more interested in what went on around us. Libraries are fascinating places, two of my favorite things books and people.
