I think it's silly to say that there is no observable difference between the majority of caucasian drummers and the majority of drummers of African descent. Obviously, there are lots of exceptions; but the stereotype that black drummers have a more intuitive sense of "funkiness" comes from years of observation. And, if I remember right, there are published studies on the heretability of rhythm as a genetic trait. It's not racism at all; it's just reality.
Your argument is tin-foil and reaking race card. !
If you listen to and understand music, it does not necessarily escape someone because of their skin color. It is ridiculous to suggest that race ALONE somehow influences rhythmic ability.
I would say that the styles of music and culture that the is exposed to at a young age, or even to some degree later in life, dictate ability to know the virtues and failures of those styles you're playing.
what i like about this guy is that when he gets up to those really fast speeds he still grooves just as much as he does when hes playing slower. i see a lot of drummers now that can play fast as hell but loose the groove when they start goin that fast
I'll say this and squash it. Someone's taste in music depends what environment they were raised around and who they associate themselves with. If a person is raised around gospel music then guess what? They're going to play gospel music. If they're raised around Hard Rock then guess what? They'll gravitate toward that. Funk, fusion, country, smooth jazz, bluegrass, swing, salsa, tango, waltz, pop etc. Where ever bros. We're all....just....human. Don't take offence, just enjoy the music.
SOME OF YOU GUYS ARE SO STUPID AND TAKING MY COMMENTS OUT OF CONTEXT! I'm not discriminating Matthew. He's a cool player and I'm a fan of his. Please get this through your thick skulls, I am not a racist. I respect everyone whether they be red, brown, yellow, black, white, novice or professional in music. Life Period! Again in my comments I did not segregate any drummers. We're all just humans for crying out loud! Take a good look at your own comments and ask yourself whose racist.
those ARE chops not concepts. theyre both a sticking pattern that you rigidly adhere to while moving around the kit. further more chops ARE more applicable than concepts. the concept of judo is to offset your opponents center of gravity. you will never be able to apply this concept in battle if you dont learn the judo "chops" : ) drums is much the same. linear drumming is a concept. metric modulation is a concept. those are chops. not hating. just thought you should know.
@thickpooxbox360 Can you maybe explain to me what the different between a chop and a fill is?? I don't realy get the difference :S maybe because i'm don't live in an English speaking country?? :P
@jaleesamg a chop is like a pattern so something like 'RLR LKK LRK RLR LKK' thats a chop as you can hit anything you want as long as u follow that pattern, a fill is always the same, like a drum fill rolling down the toms in 16th notes, it would be a different fill if you went to other drums but played the same notes, but you could call it a chop even if its put somewere else but the pattern is the same, hard to explain on this sorry
@jaleesamg "chop" and "fill" are abstract terms that technically refer to the same thing, but have different connotation. A chop has the connotation of a complex pattern. As the guy who replied to you said, a chop's focus is on the underlying concept, and not the actual orchestration. For example, a favorite chop of mine is "RLRRLFRLRRLF". The pattern is what matters, and how you orchestrate it is what makes it your own. A fill has a connotation as a simplistic accentuation.
@jaleesamg They are more commonly known for their actual orchestration around the drums. For example, as the other guy said, a roll down the tom toms. You don't want to get the two confused, because like I said before, they mean the same thing, but understanding the differences that people apply to the two terms is essential to not getting bitched at LOL.
Do you think could be possible to write the patterns and fills described in the video?, I appreciate if you can write to understand clearly the instructions, many thanks, Bless!
@jorgoku4ever - I'll have a go...Cant exactly write it on paper, but the idea is that you take either a full beat's worth of triplets or 16ths and subdivide/double one of the notes...eg. as triplets instead of having .l .l .l (ie. "one"- "trip" - "let") the first or middle triplets become sextuplets and phrase becomes .l.l .l .l or .l .l.l .l (ie "one, and" - "trip" - "let" or "one" - "trip, and" - "let"). Same idea with 16ths but instead of having 3 note groups, there are 4. Hope that helps!
Yeah, man! Sounds exactly like stuff my man Sean Skeet teaches in his hiphop drumming class at Berklee. Clearly this kid has learned his lessons well. Nice job.
@jackp22 Most of the stuff the so called black guys do come from Vinnie Coliauta, Dave Weckl, Steve Gadd, Buddy Rich, Tony Williams, Billy Cobham, Dennis Chambers, just to name a few. You don't have to be black to play gospel or any genre. It's just a preference. Need to get rid of this stereotype.
@RonBurgundy609 I'm no where near racist my friend. I have plenty of friends. White, black, yellow. It's doesn't matter. We're all just people anyway.
Another thing no nothings!! There was no jazz, blues, rock, R&B, soul, funk, fusion, etc. etc before the conception of the drum set!! @OBAMAJUSTSAYNO I know... I study out of his books. I am aware the information is not new only the interpretation. Gary Chaffee did not invent most of the material in his books. Drumming has been around for thousands of years... who did Gary Chaffee get his ideas from??
@drummusician If you have to ask who Mr. Chaffee got his idea's from then you haven't learned anything! He developed a system in drumming, which some say was an extension of the stick control book, and the older Joe Morello books. But his are totally UNIQUE! Unlike YOU! As for drumming being around for thousands of years.....Well drumset playing has been around for around 100 years! big difference. Before that it was 1 person on a snare, 1 on a bassdrum, and 1 crashing cymbals.
@OBAMAJUSTSAYNO put up or shut up buddy. Facts and statistics are great for reference, but if theres no substance beyond it, it's nothing. This dudes got SUBSTANCE.

@paps8 Re-read your post! The negativity only came from this guy claiming these were his concepts! As in "i came up with these" Sorry i've always given credit where credit is do when someone ask about a fill or lick or even beat i've used. As an example, Bohnam was asked about the 5 over four he used in dazed and confused, he credited Max Roach. Or when he did the triplet bassdrum lick in good times bad times; he said he heard carman appice do it on a vanillia fudge record.
1ST to say i havent learned anything is obviously a childish remark.
2ND Gary Chaffee's concepts were rehashed from others including George Lawrence Stone(stick control) & Joe Morello. His ideas were not unique because at the time there were many out there like his.
