i saw him several times in that period , and he was even better than in the sixties, an absolute master, whatever the tempo , able to play the simple melody and make the audience trust him, rely on him, follow him until the last bar of his long solos.

A very mature Dexter; listen to the Coltrane substitutions in the changes, and Dexter owns them! The magic of Dexter was his ability to fill space in a ballad without playing a bunch of fast notes. That takes maturity.

Many players wouldn't make it through two bars without cracking open a can of bebop. Dexter builds intensity without lots of notes. He builds intensity by playing even slower, maturity. Dexter was a true master of the art.

Dexter is truly wonderful. One of the best ballad players i Know. But you only can call the Hawk (Coleman Hawkins) the true voice of Body & Soul. But i have to admit that dexter is one of the best...
