  • Excellent stuff indeed. Beside the setting of a particular time and place which mirrors the cultural and social attitudes between men an women, it displays the stuff the soul is made of eternally: the need to belong.

  • "I wanna get outta here so I can breathe." "Here ya go, honey, I got an oxygen hose right here." ;])

  • All women are crazy--except you, sweetheart. ;])

  • The older I get, the less impressed I am with women--Shirley Maclaine gives me something to hang onto and appreciate. Is something wrong with me, or am I just that adamant in my standards of female persona?

  • Romance stinks. But true love, now, THAT'S forever. ;])

  • Friggin neo-feminists, you're so annoying. You see only one isolated problem with society and so you believe fighting that problam is the answer, but in reality all problems are one and the answer is not to fight them, but to love.

  • @savedbychrist666 : When women tell me they're feminists(not that they need to), I tell them that I'm a masculinist--gets rid of their sorry butts in a hurry. I'm BEYOND tired of these non-gender creeps and their nihilistic non-agendas and self-hatred.

  • Tears flowing man.

  • @jocelyn0000 : Me, too. Very frustrating--it doesn't help, either, to know that they were having an affair for many years in real life. ;])

  • @buzzclick500 I just finished reading her book My Lucky Stars she went into some great detail about her 3 year love affair with Mitchum. It never worked for them both because not only were they both married but Robert just seemed to be void of feelings...he was a very intelligent man but very troubled. He never seemed to have any ambitions...didn't really open himself up to her or to anyone. And that frustrated MacLaine. She couldn't seem to really open him up.

  • @jocelyn0000 : Another supremely good book is "A Lotus in the Mud" by Goldie Hawn; it's a beautiful self-portrait of a lovely human being. ;])

  • @jocelyn0000 : I had the extreme pleasure of knowing a truck driver who spent a night in the drunk tank with Robert Mitchum. He was just an ordinary guy, living his life....but I tend to think of him as a modern-day Caesar, having a little on-the-side with the modern-day Cleopatra. I believe I'm addicted to this film. ;])

  • Excellent movie depicting the intricacies and emotional highs and lows of love and the man woman relationship. Different era where slapping a woman or shaking, and please note her abuse to him where she slapped and almost shoved a broken cup into his face, was not exactly condoned but not strictly forbidden as now.

  • They apparently WERE in the middle of a long affair when they started making this film, if is biographer is correct. Can't blame them for choosing a script that reflected that, somewhat. But his character would have been sympathetic if he'd left out the violence.

  • If only he hadn't slapped her, I would have liked this film so much better.

  • @jenni4claire : That was one bad, ugly moment--but extraordinary acting; I'll bet he hated that part of the movie. It's hard to believe that they wouldn't have had an affair during the making of this film. The chemistry is electrifying. She reminds me of my most cherished lady-friend.

  • Funny you should mention RM's acting or lack of, haha. Funny thing is, he never had any acting experience. He was on a job working somewhere doing labor work with no shirt on and a talent scout saw him and asked him to take a small part in a movie, and he says yes and the rest is history. It's his great bod that got him into acting. This is a good movie. Thanks for posting.

  • Why cound'nt he just be a man and not put her through all of that! This was not RM best, but Shirley is a knock out.

  • Gosh, Love Sucks!!!

  • Bravo !!! Thanks so much for posting ,,I so enjoyed this

  • If we could all be so adult when breaking up. If we could all just say I Love You and move on. Maybe our hearts would be lighter. Our lives happier. Thank you for post. Bravo, sublime movie.

  • Excellent stuff. He's a bit short of expressive variety and she's terrific.

I do so miss these sorts of strong, unfussy films that work thru the acting, music, direction, not noise, interminable soundtracks, predictability and ott special effects.

  • Awesome, bittersweet ending- makes me cry every time!
