  • Your Video Is Very Useful Sharing Worker killed while venting tanker

  • legit question here, why vent them? cant that energy be stored in a different tank or something? why release it into the atmosphere? seems stupid and wasteful not to mention an obvious safety issue. no offense to any operator , or the deceased, but this safety issue needs a better system

  • Why didn't he just vent the outside queens and have them moved before moving on to the center ones?

  • Sooo i am trying to reduce my carbon footprint by saving a few grams here and there and its ok for industry to "blow off" a few hundred tons when they have finished using it ? WTF !

  • That's a nasty, nasty accident. That poor guy...

  • poor man he shouldnt hav operated the queens without being completly sure R.I.P. poor man the only good thing is that at least they were modifyed to stop this from happening again...

  • RIP

  • Great Post. I have seen guys get hurt while purging air from a hopper scale which contained 1/8inch lime granuals. They shot out like bullets right through the clothing and into the skin and it began to burn them, Lime reacts with moisture. Proper purging procedure was in place, This was operator error. The operator was 100% blinded at the age of 33. For anyone in the idustrial field, Take Caution, Go home at the end of your shift, Not to the morgue.

  • lack of common sense can get you killed.

  • RIP. If it's your time it's your time. There is no escape.

reminds me of when I had my car on jack stands on all four corners, i was doing exhaust work. There was an earthquake. It wasn't my time.

  • I agree the man did his best! Only problem even that wasnt enough to save him,but his death wasnt in vain, now others can live because he died to show them a better way! Im so sorry for the family!

  • "Engineering solutions..." Whoever designed the queens should have set them up to vent safely in the first place.

  • Basic Newton's law: equal and opposite reaction. Puhses pipe joints apart all the time if not properly secured with external support.

  • No training just learn on the job i.e. MONKEY SEE MONKEY DO. There are many Companies like this.

  • The other solution is to have the driver vent the tank, eliminating all problems.

The driver can be directed to hitch to the queen and check everything, pull out a short distance and once in a safe area, vent.

A driver could also continue to vent while underway with this gas.

  • that was a clumsy thing he did, he should have known it was risky

  • Too bad... this falls into the "shit happens" category... sometimes seemingly normal actions have unforseen conquences...

  • RIP

  • In Alberta, we have the right to refuse to go do a specific job if we say, it is unsafe. More places should have that same right so people can go home to their families,

  • very informative videos

  • Great video! I posted this on oilpatchworld. I've seen this done too many times. A coil tuber died about 15 years ago doing something similar.

  • @spareaxe It doesnt really ruin drinking water and the same people that piss on the companies and the men who risk their lives for a days work are the same people that shit their pants and cry to the energy companies if they ever cannot heat their homes durring the winter

  • I CANT HEAR YOU!!!!!!!

  • This accident could have been PRE-VENTED.

  • Unfortunate guy. I coulda made the same mistake in that position.

  • I'd also put a grill or some form of hinged flap over the top of the discharge tube if it's now pointing upwards, lest something falls into it or it becomes blocked for some other reason and then turns into rocket launcher when opened.

  • Very good for a great knowledge

  • Is this part of the gas drilling with dangerous chemicals that ruin nearby drinking water and lands? Not good.

  • mono sound. closed vid first second.

  • @ventHARAS You didn´t take one second to post your comment... Fail...

  • @ventHARAS lol its not top of the pops, audiophile

  • Why are they called 'Queen's'?

  • @HelloHansSolo Probably a company name. Why can't venting be done using a remote solenoid? the oil companies have used that to regulate pipelines with successes for years

  • aw man i really feel sorry for that man i work in a place like that horrible job once i ended up in the hospital after my tanker leaked and i inhaled some of it [accidently of course it wasnt until i was out of hospital when i was told there was a leak i was lucky but they pay high

  • @METALLICARULES11 that was my dad who posted that he almost died

  • that is correct [buildingthings] bosses tell to do unsefe work, and if you don't do it, they fire you, worse in coomertial work it is so unsafe ,I been there and I can tell, and is in CA.I don't work for that tipe of companies no way ,my life is more inpornt then any construction job or anything. ho yea happens everywhere.

  • I knew that pipe was going to spin off as soon as I saw it, if they had just made it a straight 90 deg bend it wouldn't have done that, also a diffuser cone on the end would reduce the force.

  • You don't have to fully open the ball/butterfly valve. Also, a long term strategy should be used for a slow venting. Having people close to this amount of CO2 is dangerous on its own, as it's heavy and can asphyxiate workers. CO2 can be dangerous.

  • what a freak accident spinning the pipe like that...a series of small errors led to a death...sad

  • I would have stood back

  • so all that co2 is just released out?

  • poor bastard :(

  • Thats the problem with companies making their own swedges.its kinda like using an untested suction swedge on dischargirng pressure.Feel sorry for the guy especially his family.Blame the safety guy lol.

  • maybe you should post more videos like this

  • My late father lost half a lung due to working a very long time with anhydrous ammonia as its a very corrosive base (in fact, the most corrosive base you'll find at ph of 13)

  • That is where all the green house gases are coming from. They should design these so they can be used to transport CO2 also. I will forward this to Al Gore.

  • @klard More then likely the reason why they couldn't transport Co2 was because of federal regulations. Regulations often do more harm then good. Government is not the solution to the problem government is the problem.

  • @edfchv1 No, I don't agree with all government regulations but the once in a while do have a place. I say this because if the tanks are not dot approved for transport while loaded there is a reason. All tank trucks that are dot appoved have been through some sort of testing for being road worthy. This means the vessel can with stand a common road accident with out leaking or bursting, stress testing for the abuse that the roads will put on it and such. Sad accident but that is what road law says

  • I feel for the guy but it is incidents like this that has made the patch so hard to work in. more and more rules to the point it is sick.

  • Did this guy open the valve fast or what? I would of slowly cracked it and had gears that stepped down the turning speed ie. 10 full turns to open. A wheel probably would of been safer than a lever

  • @MetallicAsian

It was a lever globe valve. They always open fast.

  • @AugustusLarch you mean that its a lever ball valve? those open in one quarter turn, full open to full closed

  • to bad for the guy .

  • Carbonic gas CO2 it without what cannot grow plants! Plants absorb carbonic gas and allocate oxygen! You for whom do this video? These are knowledge of an elementary school!

  • i hope you do realize that plants at night (darkness) consume oxygen for breathing, the co2 part only applies at daytime.

  • lets fill the atmosphere with Co2 eh?.

  • thats wut i'm trying to figure out!?!

  • A few years back there was an incident in the gas fields where I worked. Well, someone cross-threaded one of the ball valves along a high pressure line and when the psi hit, it blew the thing off. A nearby worker was hit by the flying valve. He lived, but it shattered his left hip.

  • @kingmackattack42 I was working Alyeska plant in Alaska about 15 years ago. I was on lower deck when I heard a tremendous boom and saw guys runnin' to the shack , so naturally I ran with them. Found out that an operator had flooded a line that was being "blind-switched" at that moment. If the worker had been tightening the bolts on the other end of the vessel he would have been decimated, thankfully some broken fingers and ruptured ear drums were the only outcome.

    Op was fired immediately btw

  • Regardless of whether the safety rules were broken or not these tanks should have been designed a little better for what they are being used for. They should have been designed to vent vertically like the one shown near the end of video. Bad engineering on the tanker companies part.

  • In order to avoid a minor safety hazard (gas blast against the other tanks), someone created a ill-conceived device to get around this "technicality."

Breaking the rule would not likely have been fatal. Following the rule resulted in a death.

A list of operating procedures and safety rules is absolutely not a replacement for good engineering practices and an understanding of high-school level physics.

This used to be called "common sense" until we figured out it's not really that common.

  • @bodybager if CO2 was in there a 1MPa (a close metric of 300 psi) it probably wouldn't have escaped the gap fast enough to avoid build up, theres a good chance he would have just asphyxiated instead of dying of trauma. But you're right. Common sense really isn't.

  • fuck tanks.. I worked a week at a place where I had to clean out those fucking things

  • what the hell builds up in a CO2 tank?

  • that's sad poor guy

  • Let me get this straight. Environmental whacks bitch because we drive cars which emit CO2, but it is ok to dump it into the atmosphere. What am I missing.

  • Exactly, the whole CO2 issue is a huge con to extract extra tax dollars form mugs like us.

  • in the US, evironmental whacks just want gov. resources to fund thier lavish lifestyles. treehuggers however, love that CO2 feeds trees. .

  • You're missing the fact that these energy companies are the ones who spend alot of money on funding campaigns for the politicians that give lip service to the environmentalists while driving thier new hummers to the capitol building.

  • Quite a good series this worksafe BC.

  • man i dont know why u are all flame about this...

...for example: do u have any idea how much lives were lost for our safe work with electricity till today.

all i want to say is that this is allday shit. we can mourn about someone who died while working but we can also be happy that we noticed that danger so we can fix it and save lifes.

  • Always new ideas when somebody die.

    RIP

  • that was a dumbass move why wouldn't you just move the queen out from the center an then vent it. Instead of making some half ass pipe that would spin you.

  • thats what i was thinkin? ... back up 5 feet

  • You'd be surprised at the crass stupidity of some people. This incident is one of ignorance or laziness, the latter is responsible for most accidents, they know the safety regulations, the chose to ignore them because they couldn't be bothered to move the queens. I used to be a construction site manager, and the bane of my life was the stupid and the lazy who took short cuts or ignored the safety instructions.

  • It always takes some poor souls death for a company to act and modify procedures. They are so easy to pass the blame on operator error when the guy has been killed by their negligence. Its very rare they accept responsability.Too many sloping shoulders to carry blame!

  • This is true. In the US, Railroads didn't start using more safety measures like Janey (knuckle couplers) until there were a number of major accidents.

  • poor guy

  • Ouch!!!

  • the man made a difference

  • Not regarding this situation, but Ive lost count as to how many people work with co2 in the oil patch that has NO IDEA how to work with it or even know its properties. There will be more injuries and even fatalities if non-educated workers deal with this chemical/ gas. If it shows that a person has NO ABILITY to work with this gas, then they should not be working with it. This man had lots of experience as I've heard. My condolences to the gentlemans families.

  • Is it So Hard To Back Up A Truck Like What? 6 Feet? I Mean C'mon

  • If i remember, correctly, and i do, he was blowing it down so that tracter service could come and move them. there were no tracters to hook on it with. So c'mon yourself.

  • he should of moved the trucks

  • Okay for Us to all criticise the Poor man . . . We all knew the Outcome from the Title of the video. . . HE DIDNT !!

GIve the Poor DEAD man a Break, he tried and it didnt work.

    People ALL make mistakes !!

  • If People Do Dangerous Jobs They Have Training as any other People, If they dont have Training Dont Take The Risk for the Sake of a life in Your Company's Hands.

  • Its not if they are unionized or not, its all about if the worker is paying attention and has common sense. Also if they are working teams you have to watch out for one anther. I never get why it always turns into union non union, doesn't mean anyone's better. If your going to do these type jobs if your union or not, you have to be aware and always work in pairs if you can or more.

  • Not sure why everyone is ragging on union workers and unions.

Yes, there are unionized retards, but there are plenty of retards who aren't unionized.

And lets face it, this was a silly and stupid accident, and if the poor guy had been unionized, he might not have died.

  • why not vent two move two vent the two remaining move them

  • that was a stupid idea.. especially by a person which is workin with that stuff and knows for sure the power of high pressure flowing gas

  • all high risk jobs should be union? why so it would take 3 men to do a one man job, take twice as long to get it done and cost 5 times more to do it?

  • wonder how many people die from venting co2 in a land depression. would settle in the valley like a puddle after rain and anyone standing in it would suffocate.. considering the amount of co2 those tanks hold there would be enough for this to happen

  • "...This is why all high risk jobs should be union..."

yeah, if it had been a union worker he would have been on break or filing a grievance or just generally fucking off, thus preventing the accident

  • Someone has to die first before procedures are changed.

  • no wonder we have global warming they vent it right into the atmosphere!!!f***ers

  • Thats a brilliant comment.

  • just move the trlr back 3 ft???

  • that's what I thought

  • exactly! much simpler..

  • yeah, all you have to do is stagger the queens so the next one in line is further back and the vents can just blow behind the next trailer

  • @oipbhakeld first of all, in anhydrous ammonia handling training, they tell you never to point the ammonia at your face when venting.

  • CO2, water and sand for the wells I've seen fracked.

The amount depends on the well and how many times they frac it. I've seen 9 Queens (each holds about 3 truck loads) and half a dozen or so transports used on one well.

  • This so interesting. How much Co2 is used in average per well? Is CO2 used instead of sand and water as is used in Australia?

Would be grateful for your response?

  • CO2, water and sand for the wells I've seen fracked.

The amount depends on the well and how many times they frac it. I've seen 9 Queens (each holds about 3 truck loads) and half a dozen or so transports used on one well.

  • what does PSI mean because i forgot <:(

  • Pounds (lbs) per Square Inch - it's a measurement of pressure

  • pounds per square inch. It's one way pressure can be measured.

  • Some times bosses tell their employess to do unsafe things or they will get fired. Most of the time its because they are too cheap to buy the right parts or pay the worker for the time it takes to do it properly. I have been in this situation many times and if you cant walk off the job because you have a family to feed its not always easy to tell your boss " No Im going to do it the safe way and I expect you to buy the approved equipment to do it that way"

  • This is why all high risk jobs should be union.

  • fucken love you man this should'nt of happin anyway

  • Yeah, because unions care so much more about the employee than the employer. The unions are not driven by money and greed at all! Screw unions! I'm a big boy, I can negotiate my own wages, I can decide for myself when a situation is unsafe, and I have the power to put one foot in front of the other and walk off a job if I think the employer is careless. I surely don't need to pay someone so complain for me. Learn to take care of yourself, you'll be much better off.

  • @buildthings79 After working in the oil patch for 6 yrs. it is for reason like this I seeked out a union job, it sure is boring but then we also don't have to work without the proper equipment to do it right. If something isn't right the a union rep will know about it in a hurry and the situation will be rectified. I'm confident that I'll leave the work site alive and well everyday.

  • yould they use the co2 from the queens to make dry ice

  • PROTOTYPE = FAIL

  • the animation was funny

  • So it is routine to discharge greenhouse gasses into he atmosphere? This should not be allowed.

  • stfu idiot.

How much Co2 gets discharges from the worlds open each day. Billions of tonnes.

Get out more and try reading

  • If you're so concerned you should stop exhaling and releasing those harmful greenhouse gases!

  • Ummm you know that plants give off CO2 right?

  • plants take CO2 and turn it into oxygen, dumbass.

  • read up first before posting 12year old information, at night with no sunlight, plants take in o2 and give off c02

  • actually plants breath co2 and make it into oxogen. thats why the atmosphere never runs out of oxogen

  • freak accident!

  • bad engineering. Operators shouldn't "improvise" ever. Sorry for this guy, but good engineering saves lives every day.

  • INVENTION = FAIL

  • Man, that suck's, everyone is searching for solutions to prevent the world of going under by an overflood of CO-2, and it's just being spread wildly like this? Can't they find a solution for this either? It could save more then one worker, it could save our precious world!

  • Tell that to the Chinese.

  • @DaZeDmerlin Change the word "everyone" to "the weak minded" in your first sentence.

  • Poor Guy

  • Another hazard, even with venting CO2 straight up is the fact that it is heavier than air and an asphyxiant.

  • so i don't get, why the hell didn't they chain the sob down, before blowing it off?

  • Pointless, the torque would have ripped the chain to shreds too and would have killed the worker and possibly punctured one of the other queens.

  • i work for a company tanker and i have de maximun safty rules

  • I work for Schlumberger in Canada abd all of our Queens are "blowndown" through plumming that is routed straight up and fastened to the side of the queen making this accident impossible on our equipment.

  • you are so pathetic, how about capping all those thread ends when pumping on your blender, those air actuators fail all the time. ? the 4" valves can be opened on any queens. Schlum is the worst out there for safety. Ive delt with you guys, and after a while i refused to go to your sites. I have pics to prove it.

  • it needs to risk some lives to study and learned for safety...(?) thanks WorkSafeBC...

  • Accidents do happen. Thanks to organizations such as WorkSafeBC future generations MAY work a little safer with more knowledge of the respective task. Intelligient species learn from mistakes.......Duh!!!

  • smart. think!

  • Safety first

    please.

  • dam I see that thing unthreaded itself and gave a good whack

  • what do queens do?

  • Queens are used for the temporary storage of CO2. They can only be moved when empty.

  • @NKOWlifelight Queens are guys that dress up like girls and try to hook up with guys, sometimes for money, but most of the time it's just for enjoyment. :)
