did you notice the amount of pitch the blades were displaying on lift off , look at the blade clamps area ,and also when he took off down the field on climb the noise was very high and not gaining altitude or mostly forward momentum , if the machine was loaded heavy , i think

@kz4506 Also very strange the rotor blades came to a complete stop. Even if the engines were turned off completely this should not have happened. But tail rotor continues to spin which, if an engine problem affecting the main rotor blades, should NOT happen. Clearly this is some sort of main rotor failure. Translational lift IS very weird on this takeoff, crash not withstanding.

@Drkadrk I don't think that is correct. If you watch closely the blades actually begin to move CLOCKWISE on impact.....opposite of their normal counter clockwise rotation (viewed from above). They could only do this from a stalled position. Now HOW and why they do this is beyond me.

@Drkadrk I understand what you are saying and I am familiar with the phenomenon and have seen it in other videos, HOWEVER: at the time in question this helicopter is NOT flying, it is falling from the sky. The rotor blades impact the ground in such a way that it is clear they CANNOT be rotating counterclockwise at time of impact. How it is they begin to rotate clockwise is my question. If they we going in the opposite direction I would say your explanation was likely. Thoughts?

@steve04 Most people literally forget they are filming. They get caught up in the moment and OMG! I have filmed many aircraft crashes and had to remind myself "just keep filming, I have to keep in the viewfinder!" Its an impulse thing like flinching when something is thrown at you when you don't expect it. The camera operator MUST stay focused on the fact that they may be recording the cause of the incident, and a shot of there own feet at the key moment isn't gonna cut it!

Presuming this is not some sudden loss of power, its Pilot error, should have done a power check on the ground. (Engine performance changes depending on heat, humidity and altitude). In reality he should have never landed there, its obviously a confined area and procedure dictates you see how much extra power you have in a cruise before you land. And before anyone says you dont know what your talking about, I can fly.

Feel sorry for the pilot, small lapse in judgement, big mistake.

I was a gunship pilot for two years and saw three wars in that time. I agree with krisRam. Probably to heavy and not enough power. I would say the pilot made a mistake ( certainly flying to exit an LZ toward a tree is not the most brilliant flight plan as the tend not to duck very well ) and did not set his power requirement correctly. This will give you very little mercy if you need that extra bit of OMMPH. Lucky no one was killed! Thing is he won't do it again. New flight suits boys?

It appears that this helicopter is too heavy to do a normal takeoff so the pilot chose to do a climbing takeoff in ground effect. It's a known phenomena that the rotor disc produce significantly more lift in forward flight. He would have pulled it off with no sweat, if he was looking where he was going by choosing the lowest obstacle to cross over, instead of the highest one (the tree). That's one dumb expensive mistake!
