I'm from Long Island 15:17 as well !..............you did a great job with these videos. You sound like a professional spokesperson. You have that voice that could do narration, radio commercials, etc... I will watch all of your YouTube videos. Thanks for the upload !
I love the thoroughness and narration on these videos. And I'm jealous of your filtering prowess. :) I remember accidentally hitting on some of this in the 80s but never really appreciated what was going on until years later when it was nearly impossible to find any more. I guess overall it's better for the masses to have quiet reliable phone service, but it's sure not as much fun!
Neat vidio. Cool sounds. can you do some off the hook sounds. I heard of two phone off the hook tones. One was the beebing noise. and the other was like a whistling noise. Can you explain the difference between a i400Hz 2450Hz 2600 hertz and gte gtd-5 units?
Wow. As a phone phreak of the 1980s I was around for the END of step and crossbar switches. I recorded a live cut-over from a step to a #5 ESS for GTE. Took my recorder and hung out on a pay phone, recorded all the old switch noises, then was the "first" to operate and record the new switch when the pay phone cut over. Your tribude to Jane Barbie (I Called her the independent lady because she was intercept for non bell telcos near me) was awesome!
I so remember growing up in New Orleans during the late 70's early 80's and tricking the phone system. I would keep the phone off the hook and if I was lucky after the signal I would get cross calls. I would sometimes stay up all night listening to them.
Another thing that drove my mom nuts was calling a number that would ring your phone. I did this quite a bit.
That number to ring your own phone was 87041. Remember? It didn't work after a while. Great for gags, like calling your friend from his own house, and tricking him into thinking it was his supervisor from Kaiser Aluminum. "We need you for the night shift, Rob's called in sick!"
Then your friend drives all the way out to the Kaiser Plant, to find out "Hey man, nobody called you!"
I remember when it quit working at our home but it would work at my grandmothers home. I would play tricks on her until she got enough and hit me with the bakelite hand receiver!
I never went as far as making someone drive to work! LOL! You were a wild man!
As an old Bell System employee and "Phone Phreak" before that, listening to these gives me the same nostalgic enjoyment as my parents likely had listening to their "old time radio" recordings of Fibber McGee and Molly!

" Thanks for calling heaven. The time is............"
That was sweet, and almost made me shed a tear. Great tribute to Jane Barbe.

This is super bizarre! Very cool to listen to and totally brings back memories of using the phone as a kid in the 80s.

Good times, back in the 1960's and 1970's.

35 minutes & up sounds like CB radio traffic with the squelch & noise limiter controls off.
