What Waits and Dylan lack in vocal range, they make up for it with their unique lyrics, their unconventional voices, and their genuine, incredible phrasing. Depending on the key, the riff starts on the dominant chord or the 5th, so if it's in D, the notes are: A, C#, E, slide up to B, down to A.

If in the key of E, then it's: B, D#, F#, slide up to C#, down to B.

Its actually two different riffs. Drove me nuts trying to figure out what was wrong.

In E, the first time it is played it is B, D#, F#, C#, B

then, the second time is

B, C#, E, C#, B

obviously theres some more embellishment to it than that, but the point is the riff changes the second time.
