hohner essential folk is the best??I don't think so. Taylor and martin sound better here. But if you compare it by price than hohner essential folk may win.In Canada, you can find 00x and big baby in all big guitar store .Hohner , I don't think so.
i bought the essential folk. the guitar is def worth its price tag.. however im not sure i shouldve changed the daddario strings it came with to elixir lights..
i did find the big baby easier to play and brighter possibly clearer too.. i think compared to the big baby the hohner is priced pretty darn good even though i definitely prefer the big baby. and yea the hohner has a nice neck lol.
for that price range, the essential folk is a good buy, even though i decided to upgrade to the big baby
Drew....saw an announcement on your website that was up for about 2 hours ....then pulled.....new Essential models coming out.....are you guys waiting to announce at NAMM?, or can you email me details? I know you don't want to 'freeze' the market into waiting for new models, but I know what i saw...so I'm dying to see the details.....Also...can you please put the measurements of the parlor and the folk out here? depth, width, etc......website does not have....
Get one in your hands, close your eyes and play. The (Parlor) plain-jane's offer a balanced sound and feel way beyond the price-tag; their secret lies in the light finish and decent woods I think? I own two and need a third. Hohner Headquarters Germany have friendly staff too. (my tests are at johnboyhayes1 on the tube if you want independent video input.) I've strung both mine with Elixers, but that's personal taste. Congratulations Hohner!
There seems to be a huge flaw here. The reason the martin and the taylor sound "dead " is because you guys have crappy strings on them. Its pretty obvious when you watch the video. That makes a HUGE difference in the sound and playability of a guitar. For all the audience knows you could have heavy gauge cruddy strings on the martin and taylor while your hohner has a sparkly new set of medium-light elixurs.
@icymallard Definitely true you can call Key Signatures and ask if this was staged. They were quite gracious to allow us to film this there and use their instructors.

@clueworm82 Actually this is not the case. The Martin and the Taylor were both pulled right out of the box for this demonstration. We don't use Elixir strings at all we use D'Addario strings that are stock on all the Essential series. Taylor on the other hand does use Elixir strings.
The big baby I tried at the store blew away all other guitars in the price range...the low end was modest but the sound projected so musically and with nce balance, had a nice crispness on the highs too.The action was absolutely stellar and the thin matte finish was a blast of fresh air,no caked on glossy plastic.
If nothing else this video makes we wonder if I could tell between a 'good guitar' and a cheap guitar. And whats the point in spending twice as much??
the diference in sound and feel from a cheap guitar to an expensive one is something like drive an old VW a afther drive a Ferrari. Just simple like that. I got some cheap guitars and a more expensive one not top of the line but the diference is awesome! It is not an snob thing it's real about sound quality, construction, playability and quality woods used.
I spent most of this afternoon playing a Hohner Parlor guitar. It really does have some amazing tone given the size of the guitar. And for the price its just impossible to beat. I dont know how long they would hold up. But a joy to play. As for the Taylor looking like it should have more bass...taylors are notoriously treble heavy. I would call them bird-like with their sound.
A ha ha, Its the Pepsi Challenge... Surprisingly I don't like the way the Martin sounded.. The Taylor looks bigger it should have more bass than the others. But i think the Hohner sounded more balanced. I think its great Hohner did this. So often we are inclined to buy based on brand. I myself am a Martin guy. I have three in my collection now.. They got 50% of the players... That ain't bad. Damn the last guy thought the Martin was the least expensive... Thats sad.
This is a "well-groomed" video. =p

there is no acoustic guitar maker as of today, that was able to replicate the low-end of a taylor properly.
the hohner and martin cant hold a candle to a big baby.

I went to guitar center in November and played every acoustic I could grab, walked out with a Big Baby in my hands. That Hohner does sound great tho.
