  • I saw this movie on french television when I was just a kid. All I remembered was the actor playing Mr Rochester. This end is so soft and sweet.

  • Superbly directed by Delbert Mann! I love everything about this version. The cinematography, the art direction, the cast, and the wonderful John Williams score.

  • I can not thank you enough for uploading this wonderful movie. I have watched all different version of Jane Eyre, but this one is absolutely the best ever!!! Thank you thank you thank you..........

  • what a nice movie! thank you~

  • O_O

  • Thanx for the upload, TammyE21! Even though I did not like this adaptation at all, it is nice to have seen all the available ones, so thank you!

  • Not my favorite adaptation...but it truly was beautiful...

  • How come they never thought of casting Scott as Richard Wagner? He could have pulled it off much better than Richard Burton did.

  • Is this version available for sale? I have searched and unable to find it. Tammy, how did you get a copy? Would you consider selling me one?

  • P.S. -- Susannah York died two months ago. Very sad... she was only 72. She will be missed.

  • WOW -- folks, how about mentioning the wonderful, beautiful and oh so versatile Susannah York ?? George C. Scott is surely fabulous in this movie, but Susannah York is equally fabulous. Very sensitive and subtle performance, and oh !! the chemistry between them... magical !! This is definitely the best version of Jane Eyre ever.... but strangely not as well know as some of the others.

  • This is the best version of Jane Eyre ever. Thank you so much for uploading this! Also, I love the music in this movie. Does anyone knows who wrote the music?

  • Rochester is too nice in this version. He's supposed to be gruff!

  • @briarrose29 yes its true that Timothy Dalton was dramatic but he was supposed to be passionate and dramatic while Jane was quiet, controlled and of few words. the book was completely captured by the 1983 version. im glad you agree with me :) i love these old classics and it really hurts to see them changed.

  • @khokhar1969 Agreed. Dalton was the perfect Rochester. Though Scott was a marvellous actor (one of the greatest American), his Rochester was too kind in a way. Dalton played every emotion excactly how I pictured Rochester. Rochester was dramatic and almost suffocated Jane with his love. Besides the 1983 version is the best adaption of the book.

  • The one thing that gives such electric charge to this version is the music. This has to be the best music out of all the adaptions. If you added it to the1983 or 2006 version it would be miraculous!

  • What a wonderful movie..thank you. It means a great deal to me to see it after so long.

  • It means a great deal to me to see it after so long.It means a great deal to me to see it after so long.

  • this is not the way jane eyre ended.not one of these sentences was spoken!the best ever version with exact dialogues and every scene faithful was the 1983 version.with timothy dalton.true the girl isnt as good as he is but really that is exactly what jane eyre was like.plain.few words.not demonstrative.but pure at heart.

  • @khokhar1969 Finally someone who agrees with me! It may have been a little over dramatic, but I thought Timothy captured the passion I envisioned Rochester speaking with. You can't say the words he did without speaking passionately. I thought this version dissapointing simply because Jane looks to be in her 40s and their costumes were not up to par either.

  • Thanks very much for the upload.Haven't seen it for years, always appreciated the mood it evoked.

  • wonderful music by john williams and jean marsh as "mad" bertha was superb as usual. thank you for posting.

  • Thank you for this! I think the 1983 my favorite or 2006 but this is high on the list! thank you, thank you for posting it (:

  • 1000 times thank you for the entire film entirely!

I love George C. Scott in this role very much. How high voltage in the last words from 4:45! He just turns his head slightly, when Jane touching him - here 4:51 - but how much sense and heart in this movement can be seen! And as he takes her hand! Great George C. Scott!

  • Im glad you enjoyed it. I love the subtleness of this ending. So quiet, yet so moving! I really like Scott as Mr. Rochester too!

  • @TammyE21

Have you seen the version 1973? That's magnificently, too! It is absolutely another Rochester. I do not know, whom - Scott or Jayston as Mr. Rochester - I love more than anything ))). I have no words already.)))

Version JE1973 lies entirely on the channel TheVictorianLady.

The version 1983 with Timothy Dalton I hate, is a soap opera kind (((

    Thank you again for JE1970!

  • No I havent seen the 1973 version, but I want to. I must say I did like the 1983 Jane Eyre, but you have to think of it as more of a play. By the way, I looked up Donizetti's opera L'elisir d'amore - "Una furtiva lagrima" and thought it was beautiful as well as fitting to the scene. I love that line when Rochester says A tear has slipped from the lash and fallen onto the floor. Its so sweet!

  • @TammyE21 i have one slight correction to make: thevictorianlady was closed by youtube, and she now has another channel: TheVictorianLady2 . She doesn't have JE1973 up yet, but i think she might post it in a little bit, just keep checking in every once in a while. :)

  • @Ksenija72 Your comment makes me laugh because I've been watching the Timonthy Dalton version on Netflix - I LOVE it, but my daughter who is 9, came into the room and asked me why I was watching a stupid soap opera. I guess he was overdoing it a bit on the acting. lol!

  • @Ksenija72 I agree with you on your point on the 1983 version. Worst Jane ever!

  • Thank you! This version most closely evokes memories of my first time reading Jane Eyre some 45 years ago when I was a teenager. It's so perfect and I most love little Adele in this version.

  • Youre Welcome. I agree. I often think of this version when reading Jane Eyre. They seem to have captured the mood of the book.

  • Thank you TammyE21 for taking your time for uploading this movie. I wanted to see it for a long time. it is a very nice movie.

  • Youre Welcome. Im glad you liked it!

  • By all standards, this ending is the most beautiful one. Completely for movie and completes this version nicely! George C. Scott is wonderful!

  • I totally agree with you, it's just perfect.
