What a cool video! I have hiked that many times, but I never knew about the spot for hitch hikers at the end of the trail. For years I have tried to explain "the ridge" as I call it at the top of the switch-back trail to my husband. You afforded me the perfect view to show it to him! Thank you very much. I appreciated the fact that you took the time to educate yourself on the crater. I was also impressed that you were so accurate with your altitude and distance.
@D yeah I know kihei is a ways from haleakala but I just wanted to see if there was anywhere on maui for offroading. I plan on moving there and I like off road driving which is why I asked. Thanks for your help though. By the way, did you see any centipedes?
@D aaghhh are you sure? I did street view and I saw some dirt paths along pulehu road near the land fill and also next to the road from kahului to kihei. It didn't have the no trespassing sign on it. You think its just a dead end or something?
@TheScoobNoob I've spent a total of 3 days on Maui, so I'm not really the person to ask. I do remember seeing a lot of farming being done down between Kihei and Kahului. They're down in the valley, pretty different to Haleakala
@TheScoobNoob Not sure about Maui, you'd probably better be looking at the Big Island of Hawai'i itself. You're unlikely to find any vehicle access near the cindercones as they're quite slippery and fragile and don't replenish themselves as Haleakala is dormant/extinct.
I actually spent a good portion of my childhood in Hawaii, but I never made it to Haleakala. Very cool to see so much of it. Thanks for taking us along for such a beautiful hike.
One of the things I really like about your vids is the way you "stop to smell the roses", so to speak - examining and describing all the cool rock formations and plant life. It's very cool that you take the time to learn about it all, and then talk about it as you find it - makes for some very interesting narration.
@TheLateBoyScout I'm glad you enjoy my narrations! I'm working on the subtitles for this one right now, as the wind got up in places. When I do a hike I like to read different guides and gather information into my head. When I'm out on the trail I try and see just how much I remember so that when I talk facts it tries to sound natural. I like being able to recognise the history, fauna, flora or geology of where I am. It gives me "Ooh, I read about that!" moments. Thanks for being supportive!

@Comet1808 Hey I'm glad you enjoyed my hike! I was using the Trails Illustrated map for Haleakala that gave distances and contours

@D shit. What about near it or around it?
