  • My Father Reg Beedie played Al Jolson songs at home when i was little and i like playing them now ! this song is my best & i know it word for word ! What i heard about this song is that before it was going to released in the uk they had to change title because of the word (bum) so they changed it to "Hallelujah, I'm a Tramp ! " I hope i got this is right ? lovely to see this video !

Thank you for posting the video.

My Father was born 1927 & died 1997 bless him !

  • My mom told me that my grandpa would use to sing 'Hallelujah, I'm a bum again' and I never knew what it was from until recently... :D

  • it's a person that has no home.. poor living on the streets.. not they way you imply it as

  • everybody imitates the cliche' voice

  • Another of Al's best!

  • This is also a great film, with Jolson at his best

  • I heard this for the first time in the movie of the same name, which I had never seen before, on TCM a few months ago... clever song, astonishing film.

  • i 14 im love ths music. let the future generation sdmire this man as much as i do.. 10*

  • Hello, I wanted to know where the part when he stops singing and said "Lady Just Give me A fork and I'll go eat all the gras!?!" I remember that not what any of these things say!

  • What a great song for the times. I have this song on a 1928 Edison Cylinder sung by Eddie Kirk.

  • Lyrics by the great Lorenze Hart --what a lyrist!

  • Thanks for posting this wonderful recording. Al Jolson lives in our hearts and minds.

  • After 8 years as an employed and affluent techie I am soon to be a bum again. I blame the [w/b]ankers. This will help me greet such misfortune with a smile on my face and a song in my heart.

God bless student life, a stern but loving mistress I left some time ago and hope shortly to return to.

  • Way things are going it's very appropriate

  • the irony of the word bum being used so many years ago, i believe its still a popular catch phrase O.o

  • Our Brit cousins use "bum" to refer to their backsides, rather than hoboes... ;)

  • @RReady555 i use the word both ways.

  • @mrdee11091 I really envy you having seen the great man live. Naturally at 43 years of age it is something that I can only dream about. Incidentally and with the utmost of respect, I know it must have been a long time ago but if you checked your theatre programme he was actually called Al JOLSON! I'm only jealous of ya!
