Show a photo of just about anyone in the 80's and they're going to look like a glammed up mess. Well, anyone but J. Mascis. He was grunge like 10 years ahead of time.
To get things straight, Pantera may hav incorporated glam elements into their early music, but they were never a full-on glam metal band, their music had a big hard rock/traditional metal and at times speed and thrash metal (on Power metal) sound, and I know what Im talking about, only morons that dnt know wat Glam sounds like wud call their early music Glam metal, or idiots that read Wikipedia and think coz Wikipedia labelled them sumthing that means that's wat they r
damn thought it was one of the maiden songs they used to cover when they started up sounds kl though this is deffinately the era when their love of priest showed throuugh thr most
@DANizDAN I love all eras of metal too for the most part. I actually consider grunge to be part of metal as well because it was still very heavy. Alice in Chains, Soundgarden and even early Pearl Jam had a lot in common with metal bands because of their musicians ship and great riff-creating as well.
@DANizDAN Not every artist who wears makeup is 'glam' per se though.Anyhow GNR were thrown in with glam but they were imo just a swaggery hard rock band. After appetite they didn't tease their hair or have a glammy look at all. and Van Halen is pre-glam. They had a cheesey image but their music had a lot of integrity to it.Crue and Poison didn't, they weren't very talented. Alice Cooper is shock-rock not glam. Imo there is a difference between makeup for theatrical effect and just being a clown.
@DANizDAN Iron Maiden wore Spandex, and even Judas Priest started to tease their hair. pantera did have a glamier look than those bands though. but to me the only full on glam metal album they made was metal magic. this has too much speed metal influence and its soo gnarly!
Thats correct, Dimebag auditioned for the lead guitarist of Megadeth after the departure of Jeff Young from the band, and Mustaine was hella keen to have him in, however his condition on joining the band was that Vinnie would come with him and become the bands drummer, however Mustaine had already hired a certain frizzy haired fucker by the name of Nick Menza as drummer, so Dime didn't end up joining and the position was given to Marty Friedman

@911SHIZBO well cowboys was such a great transition from 80s glam to 90s metal. if anything is a landmark, its Far Beyond Driven. number 1 on the charts brotha
@ThazuaBlackarrow if they were not on an independent label they would have never changed their music and probably would be one of the most influential heavy/thrash metal bands to date from this album onward, yeah its unfortunate
@Ben0itZ i dont think so. cowboys from hell through far beyond driven are classics. i'm glad they played both styles in their career. they were amazing at both. you cant say that cowboys wasnt an amazing record. Cemetary Gates alone is an utter masterpiece..
@codebabe no, im not saying those arent good albums, but 80s Pantera in my opinion was better, Phil showed he could actually sing on Power Metal, and terry was good too on the previous 3 albums. I'm just not as in to extreme metal with all that screaming stuff, Pantera went from glam/heavy metal to death metal....big switch. I'm saying if they would not have been on an independant label in the 80s, they may have been more popular and may not have changed so dramatically
@Ben0itZ i will have to say first and formost that Pantera are not a deathmetal band. Death metal bands do a lot more low growling, Pantera were a groove band. Death metal doesnt have hardcore/punk influence lik they did. With that said, I hate to burst your bubble, but glam was dying and they saw that they had to change. They wouldnt have become more popular. Far Beyond Driven peaked at number one on the billboard 200 chart. It's a great feat for the heavieset band in the world to beat out pop.
@codebabe yeah i know they are groove metal but he does a lot of screaming, i don't think they were pure glam metal though, they just incorporated it along with speed and heavy metal

Me on crack?!? You just compared this glam bullshit to the likes of metal GODS such as Priest,Saxon, and Maiden (Not MAIDAN) and I"M the one on crack!?! Pantera was NEVER on their level, not even in the same fucking building as those guys. Their later stuff was awesome but it wasn't in the same category pal, sorry. You're comparing Power/Sludge/Groove metal to Classic Metal, that's apples to oranges. As for mentioning Anvil, come on. You wouldn't even know that name if not for the documentary!
Ok, I guess we have some anger management issues here. 1st of all I didn't know you were a spelling teacher. Thanks for pointing out my TYPO. I'm sure you never made a spelling mistake ever in your life. 2nd, I don't know what documentary you are talking about. 3rd, yes Pantera was as good as Priest, Saxon, Anvil and MADIEN (happy?). 4th, you're way too sensitive. Maybe you should ask your self why being called a crack head offended you. Did I hit close to home? If so Im so sorry. Get a grip.

It's fucking GLAM metal! How can you defend Glam?!? That is right beside Poison or Great White! It sure as shit isn't classic Pantera! That would be Vulgar Display of Power or Far Beyond Driven , that era. If Pantera were proud of this period like you would believe? Then why in the Behind The Music, they totally disowned their first 4 albums and claim their TRUE debut was Cowboys From Hell?? Dime and Rex even changed their nicknames because of it! Use to be Diamond Darrell and Rex Rocker Brown!!
I don't give a shit if it is Glam, it fucking rocks! and for the record, no, they were never Glam, they never wore pink, frilly catsuits... this is fucking classic metal!!! those were the days!
@gingepunk Well actually there is/was two kinds of Glam Metal - The cool ones like Crüe and early Pantera, and the later cheesy-pop bubblegum Glam like Warrant or Poison. Anyways...I guess the cooler division is more in the Sleaze Metal departement, just like L.A.Guns and GnR
@gingepunk Haha yea they did. Look up photos and videos of the early "Diamond Darrell" era. They got Phil on board and got on the right track after that though.
Oh yeah? I'm here. I watched these guys destroy in a strip club on Lawton, Oklahoma in the late 80's and they kicked ass.
This was pre-Cowboys, but they had Metallica and other thrash covers in the set. It was obvious they were going to just keep getting heavier and they did.
And the pre-Cowboys albums are chock full of some of the best shred and Judas Priest worship ever.
These albums are worth gold to who want them. They fetch top dollar. I think that says it all. They are classics. \,,/
Yeah and the only reason you heard about Black Tide is because they were in Rock Band you fucktard. Maybe if you explored metal beyond the Metal hour on fucking MTV you'd find some better music to listen to. Exhorder invented the fucking genre, dumbass.
By the way, Pantera didn't exactly invent power metal or glam rock.
also pantera came out b4 exhoarder and iron maiden probly invented "power" metal cuz they were out in the 70s. so exhoarder is just another rip off band that fan boys rant about when somebody doesnt like them
Yeah... Black Sabbath invented metal... and there are subgenres. Did Black Sabbath invent metal, and in turn, death metal? No, I didn't think so. Different styles of metal, dude.
Also, Pantera didn't sound like Exhorder until AFTER Exhorder came out. From Exhorder's official Wikipedia page, I quote, "They are often credited as the purveyors of the groove-oriented thrash sound later made famous by bands such as Pantera, White Zombie, and Machine Head.".
fucking thank satan he didnt go to megadeth.. dimebag thrash would not be worth missing out on his work on ANY pantera song.. and dave mustaine is a fuckhead..but megadeth are good...pantera are better tho...
yeah he got the part for megadeth just before phil joined pantera but he said no because he wanted vinnie his brother to join megadeth and dave said he already had a drummer
actually dave mustaine asked dimebag to join no questions or auditions asked...but dimebag didnt join because dave wouldnt let dimebags brother be drummer for megadeth.
@Metalzilla2007 no,mustaine heard about power metal album and he liked dimebag skills....so he called him and asked him to join in so far so good so what but dimebag wanted and vinnie to come but mustaine had nick menza...and nothing happened!(sorry for my english)
