It strikes me that Superman isn't really so much out to rescue the world as impress his girlfriend most of the time (the two seem to always be connected). So what? The same could be said of most people who have done great things.
I'm 25 now but I remember that old worn out VHS tape I watched again and again as a little boy. These Fleischer Cartoons belong on a short list of animation worth preserving. Superman has never looked better.
There are giant mechanical monsters robbing banks, and they decide to display $50 million dollars worth of jewels anyway? Talk about "the show must go on" ...
It would seem to me that all the DC animated series of recent time definitely tip their hats to Max, as the styles are similar, and both are well done.
Watching these makes me wanna cry. Because When I was about 3 or 4 (I'm currently 18), my grandmother had these cartoons on VHS, and I used to watch ALL THE TIME! But my grandmother recently died of breast cancer, God rest her soul. R.I.P. Darlene "Honey" Berklich.
@75flash Aww dude i'm sorry, but umm. You would not happen to know where I can find the one where Superman is battling the giant mummy guys do you? That one was so awesome!
I think this villain is one of the most logical. Who wouldn't want to be their own boss, work from home and earn a fortune, all while wearing black tie. The man is working at a computer bank in a cave and he's wearing a goddamn tuxedo! Now if only Osama could learn a sartorial lesson or two, we might be a little more forgiving...
The CG Artists that did... well... everything in "Sky Captain", were very much aware of these Max Fleischer "Superman" cartoons while creating that film.
In fact, they said so at the time the film was released. They specifically mentioned "The Mechanical Monsters" as one of their inspirations.
I just assumed all animations done before the Super Friends would look just as bad. I was sadly mistaken. These old Superman cartoons are mini masterpieces of art and animation.
best fuckin cartoon ever made!! Man this brings back memories!! No im not that old im only 21 but I still used to watch these cartoons. Everytime they would come on my dad would say,"This is what I watched when I was a kid." Wish we had cartoons like this around today :(
Aboslutly gorgoues animation movies of the best superhero around..You gave us wonderful cartoons Fliescher bros not to mention Jerry and Joe you guys will always be superhero`s for giving us the greatest treasure we could ever imagine and have "Superman"
dag nabbit ya know bill gates invents and modernizes Winblows which has been a pain in the ass to operate since 1980-whatever and this guy can control ROBOTS with one button in 1941. bill gates=attack of the mechanical fail.
Beautiful cartoon. See that take off between the buildings? Wow! Are these the days before could fly. Seems to be free falling down on the MM. This seems to be the best and most influencial of these cartoons with it scenes being repeated in Sky Captain and other comics. Lois is sexy in these days. Elegant and a woman ahead of her time. : ) Or if you think about the movies of the time - perhaps it was a great time for girls like her.
To captain405...Lois Lane back in those days was always doing truly stupid stuff. Else how could Supes save her dumb butt so she could write the article and sigh over him?
Heheh! I love this. The locking mechanism on the monster's luggage compartment is so strong it can resist Superman trying to pry it open, but it still flies open on its own whenever the damn thing flips over.
There's an awesome reference to this cartoon in The New 52 Superman #3

Did you notice that 1940's superman can only jump high and not really fly?

Those robots remind me a lot of the opening of "Sky Captain". Notice how the look plane like when they fly, and the overall design.

For a cartoon that came out in the 40s, the animation is incredible. The character animation is nice and smooth and the robots look cool two.

Is it just me or does anyone else think it's strange that a guy with the funds to build a small army of robots and a secret fortress robs banks?
randerson15 3 years ago
Probably invested in sub-prime mortages
JapeUK 2 years ago
He robs banks because needs the money to pay off the debts incurred while building all the robots.
Ironic, I know.
