@AuthenticNavyPeaCoat Debussy would have applauded this interpretation. And as a dancer, I see no reason why dancing to this recording would be difficult.
Beautiful tone but sorry to say he takes this piece way too fast -- the title translates to "more than slow," for a reason. Having once danced a pas de deux to this piece, I would find this version difficult to interpret. Anyone playing this piece, may want to keep us fellow artists in mind this way.
@AuthenticNavyPeaCoat Oh please... The score is not a DICTATION.. it is a simply a recommendation. And Debussy never meant for this to be a really slow Waltz. The title was actually a bit of humor thrown in by Debussy, only to be understood by people at the time. Read about it. Plus this piece sounds better at this tempo. I cant stand it when I hear it played slower on YouTube. This is not a ballade.
Just perfect, fully emotive, colorfull and with fully inspiration, Szering has been caracterized because its deep feeling at the moment to take the violin, listen his Bach's partitas and sonatas
Speechless...so rich, colorful, tasteful, the embodiment of refinement... So much control and integrity, purity of sound. Have any of you heard him live? He gave it all to music, and the cultural mission music had in the world during his life time. To me, he was an aristocrat, the closest you would ever get to the royalty of violin playing. I envy anyone who ever heard him play in the concert halls. Greetings! -Pepe
I just have read about this tune in a Cabrera Infante's book, referred to it as the best romantic tune of classical music, but written for piano, not for violin and piano. However this play by Szerying sounds delicious as a romantic masterpiece of classical music.
I have also look for this piece after reading Cabrera Infante's book, which represents a wide amount of cultural references. Anyway this play is absolutely lovely... enjoy it as if where the Havanna of the fourties.
Superb performance. This piece seems more fit for the violin, although written for the piano. The accompanist on the piano is the famous accompanist Tasso Yanopoulo, the uncle of the famous French singer Georges Guétary. Yanopoupo was also the accompanist of Jaques Thibaux.
Lovely piece, also Oistrakh has a really nice rendition of this score at the beginning of his biographical documental " Oistrakh, artist of the people? "
that was possibly the finest, most beautiful, most tasteful violin playing i've ever heard

typical szeryng...amazing playing, great sound, impeccable intonation and bow arm. So juicy...so buttery.
However, i recommend everyone to listen to Heifetz' recording ( i have it posted in my videos)

Beautiful! this fits with one account that Debussy apparently first scored this for a gyspy violinist named Leoni, whom played at the Carlton Hotel.

played with such a calm disposition and velvety flavor. No one does this anymore in any of the arts -

you're right, unfortunately now we only see vengerov doing monkey faces in front of a fancy public not good taste anymore...

I always loved the shots of the left hand from behind in these Szeryng video recordings.
