  • But, if the universe is infinite, could there not be an infinite distance to the next identical earth ? I don't really understand how you can calculate that, can anyone please explain in a simpler way ?

  • Always remember! It's just a theorem - one of the most fascinating by far though!

  • A ploy of The Enemy this exesistential claptrap, meant to demean our uniqueness and this one creation of God. It takes more faith to believe in these wack-jobs than any of the major religions.

  • so. an infinite number of universes with infinite possibilities! This means that somewhere amongst those infinities there is a Republican that cares about someone other than themselves. Wow. There must be a god after all. My absolute favorite Universe would be the one with a monkey is beating Justin Bieber with the complete works of Shakespeare.

  • 'the fuck

  • This is some pretty heady stuff ...

  • Whats the name and artist of the song? Does anobody out there know? Someone should know in this infinite universe!

  • @lastannahme The song is Portishead - Threads

  • @callinterpol Oh yeah! Thank You!

  • Ahh.. All this nonsense from such supposedly smart people hurts.

Even if matter is infinite couldn't you just imagine an endless uniform sea of particles just outside our observable universe. In such a universe there wouldn't be any exact replicas of anyone. Also the calculation for all possible configurations is flawed(it's not 2 to the power but (types of particles) to the power).

I find youtube viewers smarter than these MIT professors.

Or else they are trying to glamorize the show.

  • @cometraza

He said "about 2 to the power of that." He's just making a general illustration. The actual calculation would be a bit more complicated, and require simplifying assumptions still. It would be a fun one to do though...requiring some astrophysics/biology knowledge. Also they are assuming the universe is infinite and /random/. If it's not random then you're right. Personally I don't believe in true randomness, but that's something else.

  • An infinite universe does not automatically imply that there are infinite versions of reality. For example, space could be infinite but only have a finite amount of matter.

  • @llricho

It's assumed that the universe is homogeneous and isotropic, and for good reason. The big bang happened everywhere.

  • there is an error the speakers keep making. They say anything "physically" possible will happen in infinity - actually it doesn't have to be "physically" possible as what is physically possible changes as we change - truely, absolutely anything we can imagine - and not imagine - is possible in infinity - yes virginia, in infinity, there is a Santa Claus

  • @TheDampalius no offcourse not.

The werent any cameras in that time remember ;)

  • There is a difference in what you know and what you believe in.

I don't care that maybe 20.000 identical "me's" are writing the same thing i am writing now. I hope they all are having a blast, and i wish them luck

  • Fffffffffffuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuu....

  • poor monkey!! :-)

  • any one know the song used at the start of this part of the show?

  • Why I stopped on a universe that has the rules that the things can't be lost, just transformed. I could use some magic in here ¬¬

  • I'm crushed by this clip. I was told that, "no two snowflakes were exactly the same." I'll have to review my whole understanding of reality. What is next? Are they gonna prove that Santa Clause does not exist ?? I'm overwhelmed.

  • @3877michael Santa exists somewhere, lol

  • what i find even more interesting than my last post is that in a truly infinite universe the laws of physics would change. so that in the end everything is utterly unreal. even our oncept of 'hands' or 'lamp' or carpet or ANYTHING is completely irrelevant. because they are all by these laws. the laws change everywhere in infinity.

so it goes beyond real pokemon. it goes into: in an infinite universe ...

  • what i find most interesting about an infinite universe:

    please read.

not only are impossible things possible

in an infinite universe everything simply is

there is no possible or impossible.

in fact, in an infinite universe, there is no universe.

infinity would include everything. there would be no limit.

the entire thing spins around inside of itself.

in fact, an infinite universe implies that even our dreams are true somewhere. pokemon is real somewhere. everything is real.

    beyond this

  • Sometimes "smart" people can be so dumb -

mentioning some things as if that's the only option, that that's how it is, when it's not absolute...

An Infinite Universe could go on forever and there be empty space continues to infinity past us

  • As for the doppelganger theory, it would only be true if there were an infinite amount of matter that could be arranged randomly. Even if space is infinite, the matter released at the big bang probably wasn't an infinite amount. Thus, the rest of this infinite universe not occupied by that matter is simply empty.

Ah, and when he calculates the distance to the closest doppelganger! That's probability, not certainty, he could just as well be next door.

  • Someone at BBC put a bit too much faith in the Hitchhiker's. The logic in this segment is so annoyingly wrong... The monkey typing is only guaranteed to produce the works of Shakespeare if the typing of the monkey is completely random. There are no living organisms on earth that do not follow some pattern, and even if the monkey typed away with the same pattern into infinity, it would never produce the works of Shakespeare.

  • @TheStickyNoteKing The monkey is a metaphor for someone [or something] randomly generating data.

It could just as easily be a computer spitting out random characters.

  • @TheStickyNoteKing Still possible

  • @TheStickyNoteKing your logic is infinitely flawed :]

  • maybe Infinity has it's own law of mathematics, so its like us trying to comprehend a world were the speed of light is 2 m/ph exc.

  • we are the nothing yet we are exploring the everything :) .

  • if the relativity between Infinity small & finity is the same distance as the distance and relativity between finity & infinity, then you conclude that if an Infinitely small mind looked up at Infinity and simply called 0.000............. ending with 1 as 1 then 1-1 = 0 and the finite would be seen as Infinity thus Infinity - Infinity and yet to our finite minds which to theirs would be Infinite we know 1 (Infinity) - 1 (infinity) = 0 thus our infinite - infinite can equals 0 . .

  • sorry to critize you, but 0.000...001 is defined as 0 xD

the even more mindblowing thing is: even if we live in a infinite universe with its 3 dimensions, a human of the 4th dimension would see us as a flat piece of paper.

and btw, there has not to be a 2nd and 3rd... world like ours, even in infinity, simply by adding the chance something to happen is 0. then, u can try over and over, you never hit it, not in an ininite amount of time. (sry for my bad english, im trying hard xD)

  • @xlaym yes I know that but 4-D people do not see us as piece of paper, they see us as 3-D people not 2-D but its just so hard to comprehend that we use analogies of 2-D

  • infact, youre right, of course, the point was another one tho. 4D people are ot able to see us from a certain angle, meaning we "disappear". i like the idea of time beeing the 4th dimension, then, you can explain a lot better why and how 4D works and why universe has to be infinite (with sounds quite paradox, i know). this to understand is one of a dozen reasons i study mathematics.

  • I was following this until the replica thing. Maybe someone can explain in another way why, if the universe is infinite, the known universe must have an exact replicate?

  • @GenerationB0RED

In infinity everything is possible, so it would be weird to think theres know exact replica.

But of course it could be there is no replica at all.

    Everything can happen in infinity

  • @GenerationB0RED because eventually, all the particles and molecules that make our universe will have formed every possible combination. But since it's infinity, it has to keep going even when it reaches the point where there is no other possible unique arrangement for these particles. This means that every arrangement the particles make after that must be a copy of an arrangement that's already been formed. That means that eventually the arrangement that makes up our universe will be repeated.

  • @terracottaheavens That is only if there is in the infinite universe, also infinite matter and energy. It could also be that if the universe is infinite in volume, it may not be infinite in matter and energy.

  • @brutsi Yeah, that's right. A thought I have, though, is that maybe since, in quantum mechanics, particles randomly pop in and out of existence, the universe has a potentially infinite amount of matter in it.

  • @terracottaheavens Ok, I got it. Thank you. I think I was over-thinking it.

  • @GenerationB0RED

Think of yourself as a sequence of numbers, if you are given an infinite list of numbers. Then you will find infinity copies of your sequence.

  • The narrator is annoying

  • *isn't*

  • imagine what would happen if 2 earths somehow met.

  • The thing which gets me about the Infinite Monkeys conundrum is, they won't only write every cook ever written, but every book which ever WILL, or COULD be written. Mind boggling.

  • @Oronare it's fun to think about itsn't it

  • SO, it WAS a Monkey who wrote the works of Shakespeare.

  • Great idea for a documentary, if not for the narrator.

  • wow so now somewhere in the universe, something like lots of clouds forming in the sky and seeming to spell the words perfectly "the world will end in exactly two months from now" so the panic it'd cause, yet it all be a gigantic coincidence, so now its happening an infinite no. times insanely amazing to think about it, its happening right now as we speak, so in a sense predicting the future is possible, cause i can say a planet will explode in 10 seconds and in an infinite universe its true. :)
