Generally good info. However, a pool doesn't need to be "reguarly shocked" if you consistently maintain the proper free chlorine levels determined by the cyanuric acid levels within. So, stating that the shock level should be 2 to 3 times normal free chlorine level is not entirely accurate. As a pool professional you should know that the free chlorine level required to properly shock a pool is determined by the amount of cya in the pool as measured by a good testing kit.
before shocking your pool the most important thing is making sure your filters are clean, or new if needed. the chemicals will not work to there full potential unless you have good circulation. 2nd, you need to balance your P.H. and Total Alkalinity. This frees up more chlorine in the pool to work more efficiently. Adding chlorine, or other shocks will raise your P.H. A decent test kit will explain exact measurements for your amount of gallons. Last, Run your pool continuously until it clears.

The coolest tip is finding out that SHOCK is really sodium hydrochloride which is BLEACH. Thanks for that tip. I am not afraid of putting it in now. I had a system that would make it a saltwater pool but if feels like that is more work than trying to stabelize it with chlorine. Thanks again
@mavericksart you should be it afraid!!! multiple uses of shock causes calcium build up in pool use shock as little as possible you can shock with dychlor also know granular chlorine. poolpro this sounds like a home owner
@alexperez3400 Multiple uses of Dichlor will result in buildup of Cyanuric Acid (stabiliser) rendering your chlorine useless. Multiple uses of CalHypo will increase calcium levels, and multiple uses of liquid chlorine will increase salt levels. It doesnt matter...each one will increase something other than chlorine if used as a long term solution.
Example: In a 10,000 gallon pool, 5oz Dichlor will raise cyanuric acid levels 1.9 exactly the same amount as 5oz CalHypo will raise calcium by 1.9
