  • Thank you so much! I wish I had seen this video four hours ago. I might have saved myself three hours of unneeded backstepping. I will use the adjustment layer from now on.

  • 27 people add adjustments directly on top of their images.

  • 4:01, sounded like you said "rape" this video!

  • PS is the one of the greatest weapon in the world, because of it, ill never trust the pretty girl's pic i saw on facebook or internet.

  • holaa comento comenta chauu

  • i can comment but i cant RAPE this video as u said :(

  • Your tutorials are the most comprehensive and comprehendible around! You just taught me something that was SO necessary. Thank you.

  • How do i add a adjustment layer to ONLY ONE LAYER???? HELP ANYONE :)

  • @leafblowinSK8 did you get an answer to this? I'm struggling with the same issue :-(

  • @thedr00 noo :(

plz tell me if you do :)

  • @leafblowinSK8 i figured this out, in the "masks" panel there's a row of buttons along the bottom, 1 of them says "apply this adjustment to all layers" (this is the global default - which is utterly asinine IMO as "Image / adjustments" is also a globally applied adjustment). Anyway if you click on this button it turns off the global setting and only applies the adjustment to the layer immediately below the Adjustment Layer in your Layers panel box.

  • @thedr00 Thanks man appreciate it, you working on something? are you gonna upload ? :D

    -A

  • @leafblowinSK8 happy to help. I'm just goofing around right now. this is my 1st "go" with photoshop, its pretty unwieldy so other than cleaning up backgrounds i dont see what i'll use this for.

  • Isnt that just like a smart filter

  • Is it possible to apply filters to adjustment layers that effect all layers below, like After Effects adjustment layers?

  • Hey guys, to those who really want to learn photoshop quickly and easily, try this:

    snipurl . com / pstutorial

I've learned so much techniques and tricks on Photoshop from there, good for beginners and advanced users

  • Good video. You should do more. Thanks for makeing it easy

  • A very useful video!Thanks!

  • i am using phtoshop 7.0 i dont have a photo filter in my selection box..should i just use levels?

  • don't know if it was just my computer but was a bit fuzzy so not good for watching

  • its very clear on my computer..might be your screen?

  • was this chick flashing a titty in the original picture?

  • Тупость, 5 минут обьяснять как наложить 1 фильтр))

  • awesome

  • Cool tip, you have all the adjustments one can make to an image, but does that mean you have to create a new layer for each type of adjustment you want to make? And what about filters, it doesn't look like you can use this technique for filters, such as sharpen or others. These need to be made directly on the background layer it would seem.

  • Your images are so informative! Your my new teacher! Ha! Your the greatest.

    -RR

  • document document document

i'm gonna use adjustment layers now.

  • thank you. very clear and helpful.

  • Thing is, adjustment layers affect everything beneath them D: Which can sometimes be crippling.

  • im new to photoshop..can you please explain what you mean by that?

  • Comment removed

  • nice info, i just upgraded to CS4 so getting used to do this instead of Duplicating Layers (like i obsessively do) will be quite a challenge for me

  • lol exactly. cute picture there.

  • u r great !!!

  • Good stuff. Explained perfectly. 5/5

  • i likeda photopop

  • very informative. thanx mate

  • Awsome !! you work very weel on this Photo editor ;)

Keep up with the good job *

  • Is this more convenient than duplicating layers and performing adjustments (multiple) separatedly?

  • Wonderful job! This is not the 1st time I run into your tutorials, but I always recognize you by the professionalism and clearness. Congrats and keep up the good job!

  • say if i have 4 images(4 layers) in an art work in my document but i only want to add adjustment layers to one of the images, what should i do so that the adjustment layer that i've added on won't affect the others? (becoz say i want to edit the curve level on one of the the layers but soon as i adjust it all the layers got affected (or at least the background would be affected) i know this is silly but i really need to know how to avoid it..thanks heaps

  • hold alt key while go with adjustment layer, then it will pop up , be sure tu check the check box, then just press OK:)

  • love the tip!

  • great job sir.

  • Thank you thank you thank you

  • very helpful video

  • good technique for sure. sorta reiterated the same thing about 20 times. ("adjustment layers are good bc you can go back and change things") instead of getting into anything more complex. For instance, I've been searching online fro a really long time trying to understand how I can apply the same adjustment layer to 5 different layers that aren't at the bottom..

  • help my adjustment tab is gone how get it back???

  • Click Window at the top.

  • thank you so much for explaining all of these tutorials. :)

  • Great short, direct to the point and informative CS4 tutorial. Thanks a million

  • wow!

    thanks man!

I'm brand new to photoshop, and I opened cs4 and was like "ooohhh crap"

because I get discouraged kindof easily and I didn't want to waste $700!

so thank you thank you thank you!!

  • Thanks for making it easy to understand for people like me who are just starting out and don't necessarily understand the language or the workflow...... yet.

I have had people try to explain things like this to me in person, and it ends up being an exercise in watching while they do it because they cant find the words to describe what they are doing and why.

    Keep up the good work.

  • Great job!

  • Thanks. Nice!

  • spot on, fast no messin, thanks

  • yeah..very pretty xD

  • The way he says the word "document" makes me want to punch something.

  • ROFL!!

  • I love her.

  • the girl is very pretty (:

  • haha,lol

  • great job!

  • Hi could you please tell me if this will this work well in photoshop CS2?

  • wow hd looks great

  • Yeah, it really is great.

  • great vid.

  • watch this in hd

  • woah, nice qualy in fullscreen :)

  • thanks howard, i'll start using adjustment layer from now on.

  • that's is very very & very important ..

good work dude ( what is your name :P ? )

  • the tutorial was very basic. Is the adjustment applied to everything below it? Can you apply it to only a single layer? How about multiple layers? Or a group? You probably could have gone into more detail and not spend too much time explaining the (easy) general concept.

  • its really easy, just hold down the option/alt key, and hold the mouse in between the adjustment layer and the layer you want to apply it to until you can see an eye icon, when you see that click and it will only be effective for that one layer. hope that helps!

  • i thought you already covered adjustment layers...

  • I normally just make a copy of the background and make adjustments to that, you can't change it later, but it's still better than making changing right on the image

  • thank you!

  • Great tip Howard! I'll use this from now on!

  • As usual- great video! One question though that maybe you can answer:

When I use an adjustment layer, it applies that adjustment to all the layers beneath it. I tend to work with many multiple layers in my documents and would love to know a good workflow that allows me to adjust a single layer without affecting everything else below it. Any ideas? Until then I sadly have to continue using destructive adjustments directly on the layer.

    Thanks!

  • its really easy, just hold down the option/alt key, and hold the mouse in between the adjustment layer and the layer you want to apply it to until you can see an eye icon, when you see that click and it will only be effective for that one layer. hope that helps!

  • I like that you say what will happen if your using CS3, thanks! :D

  • kewl, thanks! :D

  • My Photoshop Guru!! Thanks a lot !

I WiLL USE ADLAYER FRM NOW!

  • Awesome tutorial thanks so much for putting very useful tutorial always. Howard really you are very enthusiastic person. Your step by step explanation is awesome. Great tutorial please upload more tutorial. You are the best youre all tutorial are very powerful and useful for Photoshop & graphic designer.

Thanks so much God Bless you. You are the best :-)

  • Thanks mr. I learn from you.

  • Great tutorial thanks again ^^

    I have a question! ;D

I draw a cartoon on paper and made a scan of it.. but how can I trace the lines so they are very smooth and that the image will look great, I have tried it with the pen tool but some corners are impossible to make or probably I'm just doing it wrong :P.

And what is the best way to then color it in.

  • THE best way would be to get a so-called "(Wacom) draw pad". If you're really into this stuff it's definitely the right choice. Now the old school alternative would be to scan the image and use magic wand (tolerance 5-50, contiguous off) or similar tool to select all the lines and then right click to select "Make Work Path..." (Tolerance 1-3), create new layer and go to "Paths" pannel. Right click the just-created path and select "Fill Path...".

  • To color the picture just create new layer(s) under the path layer and put your colorz there. Hope this helps.

    On vid:

Nice & good, however I'd prefer something a bit more advance. But hey, you can't have it all, now do you? :D

  • Hej, thanks for your reply.

I'm going to try that second part first lol. If I'll be able to make something nice, I'll probably get a draw pad in the future.

  • Yeah... YouTube's comment system is not the best one... The "second" part was actually a reply to your comment and the "first" post was a reply to that one... YouTube however, tends to show comments in a chronological fashion from the bottom to the top. It gets very confusing sometimes, like this very post, I might add. :D I'm glad I was able help you out, still. ;)

  • actually the best way would be to hold down the option/alt key, and hold the mouse in between the adjustment layer and the layer you want to apply it to until you can see an eye icon, when you see that click and it will only be effective for that one layer... the way you describe is a pain in the ass... hope that helps! and a wacom pad is better because you have more control of retouching and editing. the pen only acts as a mouse, nothing more. (besides tilt and pressure sensitivity)

    justin

  • WTF? Do you even know what we were talking about? "Alt + click between" applies the upper layer to the lower one. He wasn't trying to color the damn borders, but the space in between them. And why the fuck are you comparing the pen tool (=software) to a fucking draw pad (=hardware)? "Pen only acts as a mouse", like, what the fuck? Pen tool is a tool in PS that allows you to create vector lines. What a muppet.

  • i know exactly what you guys are talking about.. you mentioned a wacom tablet (which i own by the way) and i never said anything about a pen tool. a wacom tablet comes with the tablet (hardware) and the pen to work with (hardware) the pen for the wacom tablet (hardware) only acts as a mouse, nothing more. (besides tilt and pressure sensitivity)

so, like you said yourself "like, what the fuck"? do you know what YOUR talking about? i was talking about the pen for the wacom tablet, NOT the pen tool

  • and your right, i was getting off subject... i read the comment wrong, just as you read my comment wrong. for some strange reason, i thought that i was posting a reply for

pegeseus but later realised that i accidently added my comment here, instead of there... see for yourself. as for the wacom tablet, open your eyes, asshole, and read what i said.

  • You posted the comment incorrectly, not me, thus you're an asshole and not myself.

  • right...

  • oh wait... its more like two layers over eachother, not an eye.. i just tested it.. i remembered an eye for some reason.. lol! sorry!

  • Thanks! So basically just create a clipping mask for the adjustment layer. That seems to do the trick.

  • so glad i could help you :D

  • :thumb up:

  • thanks!

  • awesommmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmeeeeeeeeeee

  • do CS3 please i dont have cs4 PLEASE!!!

  • adjustment layers are the same with both versions.

  • One, this works in CS3. Two, I'm not going to teach outdated software. Most people who had legit copies of CS3 have now updated to CS4.

  • pwnd.

  • And those who had Unligal copies have CS 4 too=p Master collection 2000+ USD wtf??

  • Hey, iceflowstudios person! :p

Howard is your name i think, i might be wrong please don't be offended it i got it wrong haha.

I really like when you make WoW videos, i use photoshop and i just started to play WoW ever since watching your specials on it. It would be great if you could maybe post some tips on that game too or maybe some cool stuff thats in there that alot of people are missing out on!

    Thanks!

  • wow thank you so much!

  • thank you

  • great stuff thank you! where do i get the filters to add hair, and makeup?

  • Thanks for the vid. I got it earlier, but now it's more clear how it accually works thanks. I have a question about your vids. What program do you use to record the film directly from your screen, and how do you make it zoom in when you want to show details?

  • ScreenFlow.

  • i think the adjustment layer is applied to all layers under it..

what if i want the adjustment layer applied to only one layer?

  • thank you for your tuts!! they are the best!

  • Who's the girl? She's cute!

  • haha yeah she is!

  • Thanks for the videos ! You are the best !
