Correction in your description: "some eighty-seven dialects" is wrong. There are over 170 languages spoken in The Philippines and these "dialects" are known as "languages." They ARE NOT dialects, but separate languages and deserve their linguistic rights to be called a language.
I'm a linguistics major and Filipino who studies language.
Yes that’s true. I am a native Bisaya speaker myself and I know that while the English translation manages to convey the IDEAS in the song, the original EMOTIONAL flavor is lost. Non-native speakers can still enjoy the song for its haunting melody, but the full impact of Ben Zubiri’s masterpiece can only be fully appreciated by bisdaks.

Look at my youtube page. I posted alot of traditional Visayan love songs similar to this one. "Kahibulongan" is a Visayan favourite, but I really only like Ruben Tagalog's version of it. It adds a lot more mystery and a sense of longing. I posted Ruben Tagalog's version.

Same here. I cannot converse in Tagalog or Visayan. I might pick up a few things here and there but it's really a non-functional understanding of the languages. I was born and raised in Toronto.
uncle Ben was student in manila and a very good swimmer that saved his life in that infamous tragedy of MV CORREGIDOR thar hit a sea mines after midnite at the manila bay going to cebu. hundreds of passengers perish in that mishap. we would never hear MATUD NILA if he was one of them.this was in the '40s.
wow grabe heavy kaayo ang kanta mura man sad ta ug nakatama an....KUK=Katawa Ug Kusog(Laugh Out Loud) hahahahah!! bitaw genuine Cebuano art that we can share to the world especially to the cultural music...KUK!!!
my wonderful grandma, the best grandma in the world, used to sing this song to me and my sisters so we could fall asleep. it was my favorite song of all the songs she sang to us. i don't speak any dialect of filipino so i didn't know what any of it meant. but thanks for posting this video with the english translation.
as a kid i didn't like this song, but now that tigulang na ko, hehehe, it brings lots of memories of my childhood, of my parents and relatives singing this song. mabuhay ang mga bisdak!!!! thanks for sharing this song.
Thank you for uploading this with sub titles. Finally, I get to understand what Matud Nila is all about! It's always been one of those songs that stay with you.
it should be "parayeg" (caress) instead of "parahig".
i always thought that the original line is "dili malubad kining pagbati" (this feeling won't fade) but then i listened carefully to the song and Pilita pronounced it as "maluba". what is the meaning of that word??
but again thank you for translating the song. i'm a pure bisdak but i have trouble understanding some of the words because the song used very deep cebuano. it's a very beautiful yet sad song.
adoy, nabanhaw ang akong mga kagahapon aning kantaha, bisan matulog na ko ga hunahuna lang gihapon ang pikas mata natulog ang usa gabuka he he he nindot man god pamation, abi nimo day sa talingting, siquijor pa kanunay nako kantahon sa harana.
Timeless elegance of a kundiman that crosses all barriers and generations- that only our very own Pilita Corrales could evoke. Mabuhay ang Cebuano love songs! (ooohh, miss Cebu so much....).
kalami paminawon. kahinumdum lang ko sa akong pirmirong harana sa usa ka ulitaw nga maanyag kaayo. mobisita man mi sa kan lolo sa probinsiya kada summer vacation. wala ko kahabalo nga uso pa diay sa ilang probinsiya ang pagharana sa usa ka dalaga. kay taga siyudad man lagi ko.
i will remember my auncle... piro patay na siya at ang masakit hindi na kami nagkita... mao man good ni ang iyang pirme kantahon kung mahubog na siya... i will cry when i was heard this song....
day pilita, kining kantaha maka papukaw ug patay, tam is kaayo paminawon dili gyud nako kalimtan crosss my heart, maoy namat an nako sa talingting, siquijor pa ako, I love this song really.
But in response to the misspelled words, MALUBA is actually part of the original lyrics. DILI MALUBA literally means "It will not be stabbed (or killed)." So really that phrase translates to "My feelings will not be killed."
I'm not sure when people started changing it to DILI MALUBAD ("it will not fade"), but that phrase seemed to have stuck :)
Personally I prefer the original since it shows more of that emotion associated with cebuano songs.
That's right, it's malubad not maluba...what that means anyway. If you really careful to listen Pilita while she's singing this song...the word is maluba...listen it again.
But the exactly word i am sure is MALUBAD OR MOLUBAD.
I agree with you on molubad and parayig. Contextually these sound more appropriate.Pilita is bisaya so she would know if the lyrics are in error. Nevertheless lami kaayo oy. Pagkamingaw intawn.
If I'm hearing it correctly, PC sings "damgo ko (u)g pagsalig" which is pleasing to the ear and contextually correct with the preceeding line " ingna ko nga dili mo kawangon, Ingna ko nga dili mo kawangon, damgo ko(u)g pagsalig sa gugma mo.
Correction to my previous post: PC sings "damgo ko'g pasalig" which in my limitted cebuano doesn't seem quite right b/c of the possesive ko. Nevertheless, her incomparable rendition makes my linguistic musing moot and, even if I'm correct, her lil glitch sooooooo inconsequential.
I'm20 and my generation do not like this sort of music! but as a Filipino and a Cebuano living in Mindanao, this speaks for our identity rather than thesongs being circulated today.
hehehe kawawa ka naman pla, pero andyan na yan basta ba mahal mo rin sha ok lang, ang masakit pag pinakasalan mong dimo mahal, good luck to you and your family. :)
i like this song very much not only bcoz i have visayan blood bcoz i like the meaning and melody of this song and i like pelita corales too...thanks itchelielie for posting this video .sana mag post kapa ng maraming kanta pa ng kantang bisaya.good luck bisaya karin ba?coz im proud to be bisaya even if im not grown up there i was grown up in manila since i was born. may god bless u

dili angay= not capable? i think its "not worthy"
nga mag manggad= to asphire? i think its should be "to receive"
Putli= true? it should be "pure" true in bisaya is "tinood" true love "tinood na gugma"
Parahig? no parahig word in bisya! its "parayig" and it doesn't mean caring it mean "affections"
maluba? I think its "malubad" and the correct translation is "fade" not "change"
pagtamay=despise? its more like mockery or ridicule
I think the one who made the translation is not bisaya speaker

it should be "parayeg" (caress) instead of "parahig".
i always thought that the original line is "dili malubad kining pagbati" (this feeling won't fade) but then i listened carefully to the song and Pilita pronounced it as "maluba". what is the meaning of that word??
but again thank you for translating the song. i'm a pure bisdak but i have trouble understanding some of the words because the song used very deep cebuano. it's a very beautiful yet sad song.
scrabbleface 3 years ago
maluba=malubad.... dili muluba or maluba, meaning it wont fade. ;)
dominicbalabat 3 years ago
ah mao ba. daghang salamat. =)
scrabbleface 3 years ago
Actually, wrong.
Malubad = fade, maluba = die/be killed.

Brings back memories...
though I've noticed that some words were not spelled correctly like MALUBA & PARAHIG instead of MALUBAD & PARAYIG respectively.
Indeed this is a great Cebuano song.
nowell53 4 years ago
I agree completely. It is an amazing song.
Personally I prefer the original since it shows more of that emotion associated with cebuano songs.
shorty418 4 years ago
That's right, it's malubad not maluba...what that means anyway. If you really careful to listen Pilita while she's singing this song...the word is maluba...listen it again.
But the exactly word i am sure is MALUBAD OR MOLUBAD.
mhaban 3 years ago
I agree with you on molubad and parayig. Contextually these sound more appropriate.Pilita is bisaya so she would know if the lyrics are in error. Nevertheless lami kaayo oy. Pagkamingaw intawn.
omniscope99 3 years ago
QUESTION: Why does it sound like Pilita sang "damgo ug PASALIG", not "damgo ug PAGSALIG"?
The two are distinct. (By the way, Dulce sang "damgo ug PAGSALIG sa gugma mo"--which makes perfect sense.)
gagothesith 2 years ago
If I'm hearing it correctly, PC sings "damgo ko (u)g pagsalig" which is pleasing to the ear and contextually correct with the preceeding line " ingna ko nga dili mo kawangon, Ingna ko nga dili mo kawangon, damgo ko(u)g pagsalig sa gugma mo.
omniscope99 2 years ago
Correction to my previous post: PC sings "damgo ko'g pasalig" which in my limitted cebuano doesn't seem quite right b/c of the possesive ko. Nevertheless, her incomparable rendition makes my linguistic musing moot and, even if I'm correct, her lil glitch sooooooo inconsequential.
omniscope99 2 years ago
An example of how glorious the musics are in the earlier days. incomparable.
