  • @emilnomel2009 thanks for the advice, it is much appreciated :)

  • Tie your ends, don't cut them and nail them, it's better to have knots under the chair, those nailed cut ends will break over time. For a finish you can use any wood finish, the paper is made from wood, I prefer shellac because it is more flexible and won't crackle like varnish, but lacquer is fine. Good luck, I like your attention to detail, well done.

  • The finished chair looks great! When I was younger I did chair canning and seat weaving as a business. Some suggestions. Don't wet the paper rush while you are working the chair as it will make it swell and then it shrinks later, you could wet it after to puff it up a bit. Stuff the inside with crumpled brown paper bags or unravel your scraps of paper rush and use that. cont.

  • @cucumber202 you can try it, I wouldn't because the paint will crack but maybe if you try some thin coats and scuff it with 220 grit sand paper between coats... Maybe wrap some of the paper twist around a board and test it so you don't ruin the seat testing it.

  • @customcaning can the seat be painted! ????? I did paint one chair that the rush was in good condition and i just painted it the same color as i painted the chair. I think it looks better when you have painted chairs but if i was doing a wood finish chair i would probably leave it and just shelac it. do you agree that it's ok to paint it?

  • @delleger Thanks for the advice, that sounds like a great idea:)

  • @Bobbiejhb Wow that's a great question.... Ummmmm I'd have to do some research, it probably would involve tacking each little piece on the corner until you could get past the corner part... Now you got me wondering lol

  • I found these videos extremely enlightening. I just have one question - The chair I want to repair has a loose seat insert - what happens with the corners when there is no chair leg to work around? I would appreciate your advice. Thank you

  • I have a rocking chair from the day care center that we can't live without. I watched all three of the videos, and am sure that I can do this project. Thank you so much.

  • I realy like your work. I have two chairs in need of recaning. If you are in nj would you work on my chairs too.

  • Nice work! Thank you for showing us in real time. I recently bought an old chair from a junk shop and want to replace the decayed rush seating. Having watched your three videos, I now feel confidant to do the task. Cheers!

  • I recommend mellowing the rush a bit and loosening the twist slightly while you're weaving. By controlling the twist, you can make corrections as you go if there are slight variations in keeping in square. Also, it eliminates all those unsightly gaps between the strands on the finished seat. Makes for a much tighter, nicer looking rush weave.

  • I saw such weaving in Vincent Van gogh's paintings first and always liked the way it looked.

  • thanks man great videos

  • OMG--Sweet. Your work is beautiful! I have four chair in need of recaning--not sure if I can do this, you make it look easy. Thank you kindly.

  • thank you so much for your videos of this process, and detailed account of your work, a massive help ... cheers
