Why are you so excited about S04? It's just a whitbread variant. And to say there's no 'fruitiness' is just wrong. S04 can produce considerable esters. Also I hope you weren't going to make a starter with the Safale. That little bit of pbw wont last very long. Get some oxiclean or oxymagic.
It probably would have weighed correctly had you placed your HUGE DRADLE CURL on the top of your NOODLE on the scale... what's up with the curling iron CURL? lol We heard you say 5 star the first time..."5 star...5 star...err, this is 5 star " sheesh Iol I can't see how a guy who COULD NOT brew beer successfully from a CAN...is now trying to act like he knows something about all-grain...what a huckster. And a whining one at that.
Is there some kind of youtube advantage to making your videos 11 minutes? I noticed that sometimes your drag things out to fill in time, and most of your videos are exactly 11 minutes. Whats with that?
Hopefully morebeer gets back to you. If they charged you for 13lbs than you should expect 13lbs. Oh and maybe your next haul should be a new mic. This is the 3rd video that has audio issues. I say bring on a new mic.
@AGoalStopper007 hehehehe the wireless mic I have sucks. I found the problem was me simply putting my arm over the wireless while sitting causing it to cut out. hehe..
@pharmcrea Hey! Yeah it's processing now hehe. should be up by 1am or tommorow morning.. (most of the wait is waiting for Youtube to process the video after it's been uploaded).. The rest of the hauls will be coming all week next week.
I appreciate that your on the front lines for the all-grainers who are just getting into it, and are holding the brew companies/industry accountable for their failings. Your videos and experiences have proven immensely helpful in our transition to all-grain.
Keep up the good fight, and we stand behind you. Prost!
Nice haul. I'm interested to see how your starter comes out using the dry Safale. I've been using the liquid Wyeasts and I love them, but the dry is half the price.
You didn't mention it, but I hope you got your grains pre-crushed.
@jturie Yup the grain is pre-crushed. I consulted BobbyFromNJ and he said that since it's a light grain, I should be able to hit 1040. But I'm still thinking of upping 2lbs of 2 row to make the grain bill 12.5 lbs so I can get 5% alc.
That's a bummer about morebeer! I was thinking 9.5 lbs sounds a little low for a batch. Don't give up, there must be one honest company out there. Definitely contact morebeer about it, they should send a free kit. After all, they are getting free advertisement on your videos
I've finally calmed down and sent them an email. I'm going to make a video about this tomorrow. I just can't believe this. I also thought it was odd so that's when I got to looking at the site and double checking my order. That amount of grain would probably get me 3.5gal. All the recipes have a base of around 13lbs so it's natural when the website claims 13, you believe them.
You've been there since the start of my videos. It's like.. what is it with the home-brew world??
@TakeSomeAdvice I hear ya! I know you've had problems since the beginning, I'm glad it hasn't discouraged you from the hobby. I don't understand why it has to be so shady, it seems like every company that sells brew supplies has something to hide. That's really low of morebeer to short shaft you like that, I mean 30% less grain!?!? Its sad, luckily I have a local brew store that sells bulk grains, but even he's overpriced. I just don't get the home-brew world either, why can't it be normal?
@TakeSomeAdvice Think you'll find out the weight(s) is used for calculating shipping, not usable product. If you notice 2 ounces of hops has a ship weight of .2lbs(3.2 ounces). Not really that uncommon of a practice.
9.5 pounds of grain should easily get you More Beers advertised gravity of 1.048 for 5 gallons/19 liters.
I'm curious where the 13 number comes into play regardless of the reasoning.
Did I pay for 13lbs of shipping when it was not?
Why is it that most all grain recipes have a grain bill of around 13lbs?
I knwo people will defend a company before the consumer, but when you order grain, you are paying for weight. The site clearly says 'weight 13lbs'. Not 'Shipping Weight 13lbs'.
@TakeSomeAdvice I agree, look at almost any recipe on homebrewtalk and it will have more than 10 lbs of grain. Whether or not morebeer meant to send only 9.5 lbs, it is still poor business practice to charge someone and send them less than what they ordered. I've looked at the site and to me it is saying that the grain bill is 13 pounds, not that the shipping weight is 13 lbs. Sometimes you just have to wonder who runs these companies.
@pharmcrea Hey thanks for understanding. I know a lot of people are going to get upset at me for voicing my opinion (people are prone to side with companies, gov't, etc over the people being victimized) but I'm going to have to tell it like it is. The difference between 10 and 13lbs is a 30% difference in grain/shipping charges.. it's inexcusable and not fair business practice. Now I'm considering buying 3lbs more grain locally and adding more hops to make up for it.
Another nice haul. Isn't it sad you can't even get a simple packet of dry yeast in most places in Canada? I haven't used that yeast, but I've heard it does have some fruity character. If you want a completely clean tasting brew, give Safale US-05 a whirl. It is described as: 'Produces well balanced beers with low diacetyl and a very clean, crisp end palate.'
You don't really need a scale. Being the cheapskate that I am, I instead had the brew store measure out a pound of grain and put it in a separate bag. Then at home I poured the grain into some peanut butter jars. It turns out that exactly two slightly heaped 16 oz. standard peanut butter jars is 1 pound of grain. I've been measuring this way ever since.
This is probably a good time for me to step in and give some instruction in the arts. 5.2 is ok, but it adds to the price of a batch. You should find out the Alkalinity of your water expressed as CAC03. It's easy enough to lower the Alkalinity with small amounts of lactic acid. Being that you now appear to be fully engaged in the arts, might as well go full circle and get to know your water. Good luck on your first brew.
@nige4958 Heya! I tried to get my water tested and the labs in the US will not test to Canada. I went on our cities website and put it in the spreadsheet. It seems to be ok actually. Very well rounded. The PH is at 6.8ish I think... We do have one mineral that is low.. my spreadsheet is on the other computer actually..
You are right. Cooking, baking, drink making is arts. If there was courses to making beer it would be under the arts program so defiantly you're right.
PBW is good. idk if you guys can get it but OXYClean free is very similar, works just as good and is cheaper. Alot of brewers here use it because it will cut through anything that happensto stick to your equipment. I add a 1/2 scoop to about 4-5 gallons of water in my fermenter to clean it and letit sitfor alittle bit...couple hrs works, and then you can literally wipe off most, if not all, of any residual residue from the container
@ihikefar Hey! And that's why I didn't didn't get oxyclean.. I researched both and people complained of residue.. here's I think what sold me:
"I'd been using "oxyclean free" for about a year and just used PBW for the first time recently. I was very impressed with the PBW and probably won't ever use oxyclean again. PBW rinses easily and quickly, plus it removed some kettle stains that had been there for a long time which oxy had no effect on, but it took one overnight soak of PBW and"...
@ihikefar Actually I DO have a bunch of CPU fans, plugs, and scrap materials laying around hehe.. I wasn't planning on it but it should be easy enough hehe..
@BobbyFromNJ Hey thanks for the help and all the advice you gave me regarding the equipment needed. I still need to ask you a question regarding the thermometer and a few odds and ends.
I hope that dishwater thing was just a joke!! hhehe
