@EddieAlda shut up, why do you give a shit what we eat, stop wasting your time stressing about what we eat. you dont wanna eat them? fine, but dont come trying to give us shit about it. you idiot.
@EddieAlda You idiot. Eating eggs helps prevent certain cancers, they're good for you, and they taste amazing. Are you telling me you NEVER eat eggs? In ANY way possible? I doubt it, unless you live off eating grass :)
So don't criticise when YOU obviously need to educate yourself. In your words: ""Free range" by law means the hens must get a minimum of 30 min of outdoor time a day. Did you know that?" No I didnt cos that is not the law in my country. Its the law in yours. Dont call me an imbecile, get a grip. Is bódach fós thú. By the way, I didn't google any of this, if thats what you're thinking. I just actually happen to know what Im on about and think before I criticise others :D
@ciarogciarogeile You are totally right. It is all just clever marketing. Here in Australia we also have barn laid as well as free range. They all still come from places that kill the male chicks. I dont buy eggs at all, unless I can get them from someone who has chickens as pets. I am ashamed to be human.
@kisher07 Australia is like America. Still allowing cruel battery chicken farming. Yet in Europe it is a very different story. Places like Switzerland banned it way back in 1991. Majority of Europe will completely ban it by 2012. I hate our Australian government, they have never put animal welfare on the priority list. How cruel to put a chicken in a cage no bigger than an A4 piece of paper just so we can have bloody eggs! The only reason our government keep it is for revenue making.
@ciarogciarogeile free range is not 30 min outside, thats not free range. free range means "ALWAYS" outside and "FREE to RANGE". Fuck the law and its rules and regulations.
@SuperGrowPlants first of all, read my comment properly before you spout nonsense. the reference to 30mins outside is a quote from the idiot i was arguing with, its NOT my information. 30 mins is not the law in my country. secondly, "free range" does not mean "free to range", whatever you think that means: that means nothing. if you buy free range eggs then youre buying eggs which came from chickens that get to go outside for a certain time, as opposed to chickens which dont.
@SuperGrowPlants there isnt such thing as "free to range". there are no chickens that are "always" outside. free range is a commercial classification, not a chronological definition. and dont give me that shite about, fuck the law and its regulations. what does that even mean here?? the law doesnt limit the amount of time that chickens can go outside. it limits the amount of time that they can be kept inside, and gives them a minimum outdoor time. its grossly inadequate though.
@SuperGrowPlants so dont fucking go and start an argument with me when you didnt even read my comment properly, especially when you clearly have no idea what your talking about. putting inverted commas around words and changing the way a word operates in a phrase like you did with "free TO range" doesnt do anything or prove anything. all it proves is that you dont understand semantics. so, basically, piss off.
animals on organic farms cannot be treated properly if they are sick, as to do so would mean the loss of the "organic" certification, so organic farming has cruelty in it too. so europe is far from perfect. but when the facts you state are not applicable to myself or this man, because we do not live in america like you, dont attack us with them. its typical american arrogance to assume that everyone else lives by the same rules as you and under the same systems. and that goes for chickens too.
therefore free range as it is defined in europe is not the same as in the USA. Please do not attack people by applying american standards to completely different systems which you havent looked at. europe has passed more legislation for animal welfare in this regard, whereas in the US it is a matter of discretion for the producer. your references to antibiotics and steroids fall under "organic" farming.
"these farms" that you refer to are "farms" in your country, they would not be recognised as such in Ireland, where we do not have industrial scale "farming" like you do. 68% of egg laying hens in Ireland ARE kept in battery cages, however this number is falling very rapidly as it is illegal to construct any new battery style farms in the republic since 2003. battery farms are in fact to be outlawed completely in the EU by 2012.
If I am correct, you are an American. If so then you yourself need to educate yourself on free range laws in the EU (I'm from Ireland and the man in the video is from the UK). "Free Range" in Ireland is classed as hens which are kept in a large, perchery type barn/shed but which also have access to an outdoor area, which must be covered in vegetation (typically grass) to meet EU standards and to retain the right to label eggs as "free range". The relevant act is EU Council Directive 1999/74/EC
Unfortunately by buying chickens to roast and eat from the grocery store, which you showed us you did, you continue to support the battery hen industry. So your efforts at "rescuing" chickens is nil. What is the point of saving a few when you are just torturing and killing more? Do people with pet dogs eat dog? Why don't you put two and two together. Shame on you.
@gimletta , Firstly, do you not think that maybe hes a bit better than most for at least rescuing three of those hens? There's very little kindness in the world, but at least some people are trying, and adopting those chickens was a very kind thing to do.
@ciarogciarogeile Obviously you need to educate yourself on the way breeder/roaster/free range hens are raised. "Free range" by law means the hens must get a minimum of 30 min of outdoor time a day. Did you know that? Did you know that "free range" farms by law can use antibiotics and steroids and still say their hens are antibiotic and steroid-free? It's imbeciles like you that keep these factory farms going. Good job, bravo! Do yourself a favor and google these things you think you know.
@gimletta Secondly, how do you even know the two roast chickens were from a battery farm? Are you psychic??. For all you know they were free range. Besides, most battery farm hens are finally used for soups and baby food because they cant be sold whole because of the state theyre in, if at all. Think before you type and cop on, instead of criticising people who are trying. If you want to be an animal welfare activist then get get off youtube. Bhéadh mo racht ort is a bhuailfainn leat, bódach tú.
@MissCheKerr you fucking weakling ,,you need to go live in a country where there is no food and see how fucking caring you are then ,,chickens are food learn to cook you lazy lentil eating twat
@nicholasbhicks Battery hens or ISA browns , are not bred ISA x ISA buit like this well from what i recall: Light sussex X Rhode Island red, RIR LS X RIR = ISA brown.
The cockerels are culled at hatching as these hybrids are auto sexing breeds where you can tell the gender by the down. I hope this helps :) Im sorry if i have gotten this wrong but this is form what i remember.
@nicholasbhicks lol, that's the breeders job i think. Like the companies buy the chickens from the breeders. Then again i'm not expert, I just like that fact the guy's given them a good life.
What a great video - it's so nice to see more and more people are now rehoming chickens and are becoming aware of what caged farming does to the poor hens !
(Though these girls looked in good condition compared to some poor scraps I've seen).
And people don't realise how good company chickens make - they are entertaining, have characters, can be affectionate and very good at making stress just fade away!
I would think with the change of environment it would have helped the chickens' health somewhat especially with the privilege of enjoying the outdoor fresh air for a little while. I don't know much about chickens, but perhaps allow them outdoors during the day and indoors at night.
I have a little 2 week old hand reared chick. We rescued her form an incubator at school, she was being pecked so badly that she couldn't stand up or defend herself. At the moment shes living in a guinea pig run in our kitchen and free ranging in our garden. Im sure she would like a little friend in the future and I was wondering if any experts thought that an ex battery hen would be a good idea? Any advice much appreciated!
@kingcrimson234 In battery conditions they are all packed so tightly with one another that they can't even move or walk or turn their heads. They are starved in order to speed their bodies into different stages to produce more eggs, and when they are fed it's on an infrequent schedule. I'd saying being able to walk around, stretch their legs, see sunlight, and eat properly is a pretty good deal in comparison.
Bless them overwhelmed by being released onto grass.... Shame yours did not live long as they can live quite a long time. Hope you give it another try if you have not already.
yours are all feathered up, ive just rescued some and 90% of battery hens have no feathers , battery hen welfare trust must bring them on first ah, which is a good job because if you see them when they first come out of battery cages 90 % of people would stop buying eggs from caged hens instantly. hope they all doing well
@darkninjafirefox A hen that spends its entire life inside a cage unable to move or do anything that chickens are meant to do... they are basically biological egg machines and Dont ever buy caged eggs... :)
my family did the same exept we picked them up stait from the farm adn we got 10 they have almost no feathers and they barly knew how to walk we got them 1 day ago and they have already layed 19 eggs
although i'm a devoted vegetarian, the only reason why i become one was because i don't agree with the way they treat the chickens. you still can't be sure the organic or free range chickens are treated humanly. and it's the same with other animals.
but every vegetarian saves 93 animals a year. I'm quite pleased with that :)
lol and kill millions with pesticides and chemicals used to grow plants getting into ground/water and other animals such as deer rabbits and birds consume get sic and die being vegetarian dos not save a thing unless you grow youre own food 100% free of chemicals which you are not going to get from walmart and grocery stores or most big farmers use pesticides because if they didnt they would loose alot of mony/food to insects
@Cla900 u think u save animals by not eating them, thats like me saying i saved 93 people because i did'nt kill them. if u don't eat them some1 else will or they will slaughterd.i am completely against cruelty. i have several chickens myself. but people like u who think there doing something great by doing fuck all. just pisses me off. ur just full of ur self. im not against vegetarian's but u and alot others think ye are fukin hero's for not eating meat.
Supply and demand. Say there was a country with 1,000 citizens and one meat producer. If 100 people decided to stop eating meat, the meat producer could either slaughter the same number of animals and have 10% that he couldn't sell, which wouldn't make good business sense, OR he could slaughter 10% fewer animals. Every one of us who doesn't demand the product has an effect on the supply.
and regardless, i'm not going to contribute to cruelty.
@Cla900 were talking about lots of people not a 1000. if 1 person stops eating meat there will be more to replace that person. these bastards will be able to sell every chicken, egg or whatever they are selling because there not depending on a local market. the only thing that will stop this going on if everybody in the world stops buying meat from the shops at the cheapest prices, but that is not posible. not everyone can afford better food. also people need protein to grow when they are young.
well it's quite amusing because i have a very rare bone condition called osteogenesis imperfecta (brittle bones).
and calcium & protein are VERY much needed in my diet..otherwise my bones will practically cripple into dust. yet growing up as a kid i refused to eat animal by products, so i didn't.
and here i am! 18 years old and still walking!
look at it like this: there are roughly 400 million vegetarians in the world surely that has an impact on the meat trade?
it may not have a drastic affect on the numbers of animals killed for food, but it still makes a difference. and that's what matters.
no buying. no killing.
and what has my choice being a gamble got ANYTHING to do with the point i was trying to make? i was just proving that protein is not a necessity in our diet.
@Cla900 I agree, humanely means very little, if anything at all. Though I will never understand the thing they call "vegetarianism" while eating dairy. The dairy industry is one of the most vile. And if you are a woman eating dairy, know that cows, as a female species, are treated terribly, constantly raped and losing their babies. They cry for days after they give birth and have baby taken away.
which is why i eat very little dairy..even though i should since i have a condition called osteogenesis imperfecta (brittle bones) and calcium is very much needed in my diet. but i still do without the majority of the time apart from the eggs that my ex batts kindly lay for me every day of course :)
@Cla900 But you should know that it's biologically proven that dairy is not the best source of calcium from humans. It actually causes brittle bones, and not the other way around. Google it, you will find it most easily in vegan information about dairy, so, say, Google "osteoporosis, dairy, calcium, vegan" - no need for quotation marks - and please check it out. This is very important info! A myth that's been dispelled.
Good on you. I'm getting chickens in the spring and am considering battery rescues. I was quite amused by the cooked chicken scene. Hope they were free range too!
PLease do get rescue ones, I just got some myself and it's horrible the conditions they must have been in.
All the shit they pumped into em has made there eggs twice as big, I can't belives people can put a living thing through such an act and be ok with it.
ok yes the eglu is a bit small but the fact is that he saved them and tbh i wish i could save a few chickens. it is actually heart warming because i just watched a video showing battery hens and made me cry. :(
Very thoughtful of you to rescue the battery hens. i just bought some chickens to keep as egg-laying pets, but this idea didn't occur to me. Maybe next time!
i think that the idea of the eglu is nice, and it is really cool looking, but i think is more of a toy if you know what i mean. like, i have two large field arks, and the smallest is about 10 times larger than that eglu. its kinda hard to take seriously. lol. but thnx for saving the chickens
while it is heartwarming to see that they have a new home, seeing two dead chickens ready to be cooked really did not make sense to me.why did those chickens deserve to be your dinner?and i thought it was a shame that the "eglu" was so small.don't get me wrong,i think it is brilliant you took those chickens in,but i think you fail to look at the bigger picture,in that all animals and humans deserve life, and not to be someone's dinner.
I've ordered one of those 'Omlet Eglu's' from the UK, not sure when it's going to arrive to the my country but watching this video has made me decide to RESCUE Ex battery Hens instead, much better option!
Poor hens, they dont understand what freedom is to even feel it, they are just standing there confused thinking "what the f*ck are we supposed to do?"
Poor hens. I really hope cage free eggs become more commonplace. The eglu is a nice home, but I wish it were more affordable. I built a coop for my two hens after considering an eglu.
Update on chickens. One of the original ones got egg peritonitis and I drained it successfully once (I'm a vet), but 12 weeks later it succumbed and had to be euthanased. Another one died of pneumonia and the last one of these 3 died suddenly last night. I think possibly Battery hens are not bred for longevity, but they all had a nice time in the garden for a while.
Sorry to hear that, but they can be kept for a good few years, because they are red sex-links and leghorns. They are a regular breed of chicken, it is just the way they were kept at first that will determine their fate!
@gordonwilliams Sorry you lost your birds, coincidentally I've been asking around because I'm getting some birds for the garden and I've been warned that ISA's have a short life expectancy because of a compromised immune system, that's supposed to effect about 75% of birds.
What is peritonitis? I have six and one has a large breast that is practically dragging on the ground. This chicken is a bit slower than the others, but still gets around fine.
Was wondering if you could tell me how to treat it? Thanks.
@gordonwilliams Thank you for this act of humane kindness, providing them with a loving and caring home, and the freedom they deserved from the moment they hatched. And for allowing them a place to die in freedom, rather than ending up in a fertilizer mill. You've restored a bit of my faith in humanity.
@gordonwilliams not really a great vet then ,,i had 10 rescue chickens with no feathers and floppy combs within 6 monthst they were as good as any other chicken ,,eggs werent great though
@cgisby oh really and you have extensive experience then do you ,,most vets are fucking useless cunts they know everything about animals they have never kept they misdiagnose all the time
@simpleearthling Yes, my friend owns a farm, I rent some land off it, I have so far bought 20 ex-bats. 6 of them have died within the first few months, whereas the rest of them are still alive, some for over a year. Ex-bats don't always survive, don't be such an ignorant minded little prick.
Also, the majority of vets I know are actually pretty good, even with animals they don't usually encounter, such as my chickens.
They are such FANTASTIC time waters aren't they?? We picked up 5 a couple of weeks ago and ours were much more 'oven-ready'. Unfortunately we have lost two - one had a smashed hip and the other was put to sleep by the evt due to peritonitis caused by an ectopic XXXL egg. I broke my heart. See Cluck's Film - you'll see a difference between your hens and our little soul. On a happier note, Corriander, Paxo and MB have settled in well, are as tame as anything and are quilling up beautifully.
They are hens that are kept in tiny cages to mass produce eggs.check the 4th related video. They are treated cruelly and die after a year as oppose to 5-6 years usually.if they stop laying they are killed. This man has kindly rescued 3 of them and look how happier they look after a few days!
Yes CSBarrett14 - about £1 or £2 per bird - or whatever donantion above that you care to give. So not much really. But the housing etc. does cost considerabley more.
1 UK£ = 1.4799 US$ - I dont know what the American equivalent is to our BHWT charity but I am sure you could Google them if you wanted to get a couple of hens.
Ours are just the cheekiest of chickens!! They know no fear and yesterday one of ours called "Paxo" ran the length of our huge garden to eat the dog's dinner. The stupid dog let her, at first, then nosed her out of the way and gobbled up her food PDQ!! Since Mar 14 09 we have just reached our 90th egg! Omlette anyone? ;-)
First of all i have chickens and i love my girls very much, i am also a vegetarian. I just wish every little chicken in the world could have a chance at life like your girls do, i is so sad to see battery caged hens and how chickens get mistreated by some people, eg; biting heads off of chickens, plucking them alive and choking them to death or boiling them to death, i have seen things here on youtube that haunt me at night. You are good people for treating your chickens with kindness as showen
the chicken me and my sister picked up were goin 2 be killed that afternoon, unfortunatly we couldnt save them all so that afternoon about 300 chickens were killed before they even had a chance 2 live!
me and my sister did this same thing in d weekend but we got 63!!!!!
we no longer eat cage eggs as we have seen how they are treated so cruely. Id like 2 encourage more people 2 do so.
these chickens wil of been kept in a very small cage where they cant even stretch there wings or turn around just so we can have eggs! also pigs r kept in a small crate from when they r only about 4 weeks old to when they r about 2 years old and then they are eaten! these animals never even had a chance 2 live!
aww, how lovely, i keep chickens but we were told battery hens were only for beginners, so we got some normal ones. i want to keep battery ones someday though :)
I have 3 hens, but live on Guernsey where we don't have any battery farms so had to buy 'new' hens, would've liked to have rescued some battery ones though.
you are trying to make your self look really good, rescuing the chickens, but you have gone and bought two MULTI BUY chickens from tesco. Number one the wont be free range and number two tesco is an awful company!
Do you know why we have battery hens? why we have industrialized killing of pigs, chickens, cows? why we have genetically engineered crops and clearing rain forest in order to get more useful land? Because we humans are living too long and there are too many of us. every time you take antibiotics, every time you put a coat on when you are cold every time we save a life with surgery, hospitalization or any type of agent we are stoping our own evolution, we are becoming a weak and pathetic species
no you are wrong there. or only partially right. the real thing is our society is based upon master/slave and consumerism coupled with capitalistic competition. these ingrediants ensure that you work 9-5 jobs your whole lives, to pay mortgages or rent on overpriced real estate from high taxes and the need to be close to job combined with disappearing space. so everything else must be cheeper, thus raising of chickens in little boxes. its greed. nothing else.
I don't know how it is elsewhere, but here in Australia, battery hens spend their lives in a cage smaller than an A4 piece of paper, no room to move, with feed and water dishes in front of them. They live in stinking rows 100s long, and maybe 4-5 high. They exist to supply eggs to consumers. They never see sun or grass. Once they lay 300 eggs they get shredded for fertiliser. Horrible, cruel. Don't excuse your naivety, ask questions, gain knowledge, educate others. Battery farming is wrong!
I've noticed some radical comments. I have 7 chickens, and they're very happy. For a treat, I will catch a grasshopper, and give it to my chickens. As a matter of fact, I sometimes give chicken to my chickens because they love the taste of delicious meat.

SuperGrowPlants 9 months ago
@SuperGrowPlants first of all, read my comment properly before you spout nonsense. the reference to 30mins outside is a quote from the idiot i was arguing with, its NOT my information. 30 mins is not the law in my country. secondly, "free range" does not mean "free to range", whatever you think that means: that means nothing. if you buy free range eggs then youre buying eggs which came from chickens that get to go outside for a certain time, as opposed to chickens which dont.
ciarogciarogeile 9 months ago
@SuperGrowPlants there isnt such thing as "free to range". there are no chickens that are "always" outside. free range is a commercial classification, not a chronological definition. and dont give me that shite about, fuck the law and its regulations. what does that even mean here?? the law doesnt limit the amount of time that chickens can go outside. it limits the amount of time that they can be kept inside, and gives them a minimum outdoor time. its grossly inadequate though.
ciarogciarogeile 9 months ago
@SuperGrowPlants so dont fucking go and start an argument with me when you didnt even read my comment properly, especially when you clearly have no idea what your talking about. putting inverted commas around words and changing the way a word operates in a phrase like you did with "free TO range" doesnt do anything or prove anything. all it proves is that you dont understand semantics. so, basically, piss off.

animals on organic farms cannot be treated properly if they are sick, as to do so would mean the loss of the "organic" certification, so organic farming has cruelty in it too. so europe is far from perfect. but when the facts you state are not applicable to myself or this man, because we do not live in america like you, dont attack us with them. its typical american arrogance to assume that everyone else lives by the same rules as you and under the same systems. and that goes for chickens too.
ciarogciarogeile 1 year ago
therefore free range as it is defined in europe is not the same as in the USA. Please do not attack people by applying american standards to completely different systems which you havent looked at. europe has passed more legislation for animal welfare in this regard, whereas in the US it is a matter of discretion for the producer. your references to antibiotics and steroids fall under "organic" farming.
ciarogciarogeile 1 year ago
"these farms" that you refer to are "farms" in your country, they would not be recognised as such in Ireland, where we do not have industrial scale "farming" like you do. 68% of egg laying hens in Ireland ARE kept in battery cages, however this number is falling very rapidly as it is illegal to construct any new battery style farms in the republic since 2003. battery farms are in fact to be outlawed completely in the EU by 2012.
ciarogciarogeile 1 year ago
If I am correct, you are an American. If so then you yourself need to educate yourself on free range laws in the EU (I'm from Ireland and the man in the video is from the UK). "Free Range" in Ireland is classed as hens which are kept in a large, perchery type barn/shed but which also have access to an outdoor area, which must be covered in vegetation (typically grass) to meet EU standards and to retain the right to label eggs as "free range". The relevant act is EU Council Directive 1999/74/EC
ciarogciarogeile 1 year ago
Unfortunately by buying chickens to roast and eat from the grocery store, which you showed us you did, you continue to support the battery hen industry. So your efforts at "rescuing" chickens is nil. What is the point of saving a few when you are just torturing and killing more? Do people with pet dogs eat dog? Why don't you put two and two together. Shame on you.
gimletta 1 year ago
@gimletta , Firstly, do you not think that maybe hes a bit better than most for at least rescuing three of those hens? There's very little kindness in the world, but at least some people are trying, and adopting those chickens was a very kind thing to do.
ciarogciarogeile 1 year ago
@ciarogciarogeile Obviously you need to educate yourself on the way breeder/roaster/free range hens are raised. "Free range" by law means the hens must get a minimum of 30 min of outdoor time a day. Did you know that? Did you know that "free range" farms by law can use antibiotics and steroids and still say their hens are antibiotic and steroid-free? It's imbeciles like you that keep these factory farms going. Good job, bravo! Do yourself a favor and google these things you think you know.
gimletta 1 year ago
@gimletta Secondly, how do you even know the two roast chickens were from a battery farm? Are you psychic??. For all you know they were free range. Besides, most battery farm hens are finally used for soups and baby food because they cant be sold whole because of the state theyre in, if at all. Think before you type and cop on, instead of criticising people who are trying. If you want to be an animal welfare activist then get get off youtube.

What a great video - it's so nice to see more and more people are now rehoming chickens and are becoming aware of what caged farming does to the poor hens !
(Though these girls looked in good condition compared to some poor scraps I've seen).
And people don't realise how good company chickens make - they are entertaining, have characters, can be affectionate and very good at making stress just fade away!

how is moving them from a small cage to a big cage freedom?
kingcrimson234 1 year ago
@kingcrimson234 In battery conditions they are all packed so tightly with one another that they can't even move or walk or turn their heads. They are starved in order to speed their bodies into different stages to produce more eggs, and when they are fed it's on an infrequent schedule. I'd saying being able to walk around, stretch their legs, see sunlight, and eat properly is a pretty good deal in comparison.

i love to eat chicken, but if i am breeding them for consumation i will grow them humanely.
after ail God gave us these animals to eat
maltijien 2 years ago
i agree.
although i'm a devoted vegetarian, the only reason why i become one was because i don't agree with the way they treat the chickens. you still can't be sure the organic or free range chickens are treated humanly. and it's the same with other animals.
but every vegetarian saves 93 animals a year. I'm quite pleased with that :)
Cla900 2 years ago 10
lol and kill millions with pesticides and chemicals used to grow plants getting into ground/water and other animals such as deer rabbits and birds consume get sic and die being vegetarian dos not save a thing unless you grow youre own food 100% free of chemicals which you are not going to get from walmart and grocery stores or most big farmers use pesticides because if they didnt they would loose alot of mony/food to insects
MrWaterdragon08 2 years ago
@MrWaterdragon08
it's different in the UK.
I live in Scotland, where you can get local produce.
But I see where you're coming from.
Farmers kill rabbits to stop them eating their vegetables. But still...I'm saving more animals being a vegetarian than not being one
Cla900 2 years ago
@Cla900 u think u save animals by not eating them, thats like me saying i saved 93 people because i did'nt kill them. if u don't eat them some1 else will or they will slaughterd.i am completely against cruelty. i have several chickens myself. but people like u who think there doing something great by doing fuck all. just pisses me off. ur just full of ur self. im not against vegetarian's but u and alot others think ye are fukin hero's for not eating meat.

switzercraftbullet 8 months ago
@switzercraftbullet
Wrong.
Cla900 8 months ago
@Cla900 were talking about lots of people not a 1000. if 1 person stops eating meat there will be more to replace that person. these bastards will be able to sell every chicken, egg or whatever they are selling because there not depending on a local market. the only thing that will stop this going on if everybody in the world stops buying meat from the shops at the cheapest prices, but that is not posible. not everyone can afford better food. also people need protein to grow when they are young.
switzercraftbullet 8 months ago
@switzercraftbullet
well it's quite amusing because i have a very rare bone condition called osteogenesis imperfecta (brittle bones).
and calcium & protein are VERY much needed in my diet..otherwise my bones will practically cripple into dust. yet growing up as a kid i refused to eat animal by products, so i didn't.
and here i am! 18 years old and still walking!
look at it like this: there are roughly 400 million vegetarians in the world surely that has an impact on the meat trade?
Cla900 7 months ago
@Cla900 400milion people out of over 6 billion thats nothing. and its your choice to take a gamble on your life and all it was was a gamble.
switzercraftbullet 7 months ago
@switzercraftbullet
it may not have a drastic affect on the numbers of animals killed for food, but it still makes a difference. and that's what matters.
no buying. no killing.
and what has my choice being a gamble got ANYTHING to do with the point i was trying to make? i was just proving that protein is not a necessity in our diet.
you're just a slave to propaganda
Cla900 6 months ago
@Cla900 im not a slave to nobody. agree to dissagree
switzercraftbullet 6 months ago
@Cla900 I agree, humanely means very little, if anything at all. Though I will never understand the thing they call "vegetarianism" while eating dairy. The dairy industry is one of the most vile. And if you are a woman eating dairy, know that cows, as a female species, are treated terribly, constantly raped and losing their babies. They cry for days after they give birth and have baby taken away.
meloearth 7 months ago 10
@meloearth
yes i totally agree with you.
which is why i eat very little dairy..even though i should since i have a condition called osteogenesis imperfecta (brittle bones) and calcium is very much needed in my diet. but i still do without the majority of the time apart from the eggs that my ex batts kindly lay for me every day of course :)
Cla900 7 months ago
@Cla900 But you should know that it's biologically proven that dairy is not the best source of calcium from humans. It actually causes brittle bones, and not the other way around. Google it, you will find it most easily in vegan information about dairy, so, say, Google "osteoporosis, dairy, calcium, vegan" - no need for quotation marks - and please check it out. This is very important info! A myth that's been dispelled.

teenmod12 2 years ago
while it is heartwarming to see that they have a new home, seeing two dead chickens ready to be cooked really did not make sense to me.why did those chickens deserve to be your dinner?and i thought it was a shame that the "eglu" was so small.don't get me wrong,i think it is brilliant you took those chickens in,but i think you fail to look at the bigger picture,in that all animals and humans deserve life, and not to be someone's dinner.

Update on chickens. One of the original ones got egg peritonitis and I drained it successfully once (I'm a vet), but 12 weeks later it succumbed and had to be euthanased. Another one died of pneumonia and the last one of these 3 died suddenly last night. I think possibly Battery hens are not bred for longevity, but they all had a nice time in the garden for a while.
gordonwilliams 2 years ago 12
Sorry to hear that, but they can be kept for a good few years, because they are red sex-links and leghorns. They are a regular breed of chicken, it is just the way they were kept at first that will determine their fate!

csbarrett14 2 years ago
@gordonwilliams Sorry you lost your birds, coincidentally I've been asking around because I'm getting some birds for the garden and I've been warned that ISA's have a short life expectancy because of a compromised immune system, that's supposed to effect about 75% of birds.
