  • Gnome 3 is perfect. I am sorry for the people who don't understand the wonders of this new project. See, everybody is able to acess your system, mainly at home, and be aware of what you do with your pc. Whit G3, its impossible, they aren't able to figure out how it works or even how to get acess to your home folder. So I laught whe i read that G3 is for noobs, it protects your privacy, your movies and photos folder.... and so on. At office, ok, I am using Kde and Xfce, G3 is useless for office.

  • @mx22a

LOL Gnome 3 protects your P.C from intruders??? A "Desktop Environment" ?? Really? oooookkkkk.... And I am a Easter Bunny Jet Pilot from the Planet Uranus

  • I think the themes "tab" in the gnome shell overview are mainly there for the developers to test out recent Cinnamon changes in different themes. Just quicker for them to switch.

  • @coldcut88

it's gone in the latest cinnamon

  • Umm...Gnome Shell IS Gnome 3.

  • @ckildegaard

    Ummmmm. No it's not

  • @ckildegaard

I thought the same thing until I found this

"For Ubuntu users, this question does not yet matter: Ubuntu is still using Gnome 2.

Gnome 3 is the successor of Gnome 2. Has been in developpement for a very long time, relies on largely rewritten gtk 3 libraries, etc.

Gnome Shell is just the surface of the system: the software that you see first when your computer is ready and that allows you to start applications and work with data."

    From the Ubuntu forums

  • @ckildegaard It is better to keep your mouth closed and let people think you are a fool than to open it and remove all doubt.

  • @ckildegaard no its not :P

  • very informative thanks kaddy

  • @battcomp

    cheers

  • Why does the start menu thing have to be so big? In windows 7 it accomplishes the same goal and dosent take up half the screen to do it.

The linux world is a mess right now with the gnome shell gnome 3 debacle wich is why i went back to using windows 7.

Until they get this nonsense straightened out im gonna have to stick with trusty ol windows.

  • @skilo1983

gnome 3 / unity is a bit of a mess atm.... but unlike the windows world... Open source development happens in the open and is pushed out for user testing/feedback as it progresses..... Otherwise there is plenty of other choices for a desktop environment that is fully functional.... if you like windows suprised you didn't just go for Kde. I'm using kde 4.8rc2 right now and it simply rocks your socks off!

  • @Linux4UnMe Actually my first distro was PClinux 7 or 8 i think, it had KDE 3.2 wich was great, after KDE started changing and they added that god awful plasma thing i switched to ubuntu 7.04 wich was my first gnome distro, I used ubuntu up until 10.10 when they ruined it with unity then i wen to mint, I do like the cinnamon interface in mint 12 i think its a step in the right direction wich is more than i can say for ubuntu as i believe unity is a horrible useless interface.

  • @skilo1983

true enough.... but it will take a couple years for gnome 3xx to mature.... and there is no guarantee the devs will bring back many missing features in gnome cause they prefer to dumb it down.... kde is powered up to the max with features and 4.8 seems the most stable, snappy version yet.... i know where i'm staying ;)

  • @skilo1983 And then you have people like myself that much prefer Unity to Windows 7. I curse Windows name every time I have to work in it; life is much quicker in Unity once you spend a few days learning the shortcuts and breaking habits.

  • I like the Cinnamon Desktop.i used to use Zorin OS to convert my friends and family to linux, but now i think ill be using this, simply cuz, it has the traditional look and feel that anyone who has ever used a computer before knows how to use, and it has the extra features of the gnome shells like multi-desktop and the hot-corner/super key to view all windows (which they really like cuz they dont get that in windows) ill just wait for it to become more stable first

  • This looks a lot like KDE. If you want something that looks like KDE, why not just use KDE and benefit from all the additional features and the flexibility of the Qt toolkit?

  • if gnome shell doesn't improve I'd probably move to XFCE or KDE.

  • Linux Mint 12 and Ubuntu they all FULL OF SHIT Gnome 3 if was good now it look like shit in windows all my shit work

  • @JorgeRosado2012

    o_0 o_0 o_0

um... thanks for your input :)

  • @JorgeRosado2012

Thankfully there is other options :)

Personally I love Ubuntu 11.10 and Mint 12.

  • XFCE4THEWIN

  • @jmac217x I concur!

  • Gnome 2 was like eating your favorite meal. Gnome 3 is like that terrible shit you have the next morning. All of these 'forks' are like playing in shit. Shit stinks.

  • as i said bfefore to that childish bryan

    yah..... about the cinnamon

it will be a success project ...... because all the the people will not try to use a died project , and its developers cant go further in the future than solving the bugs without making any new feature for it ... i mean (( mate project )) ================ but cinnamon always will get what gnome3 got but the only differences between the two of them is the UI

  • @sameyieyir Bryan's (or was it Chris) point was that Mint is a small team. They make a great distribution, but now that they are forking/tweaking Gnome-Shell, will we see drop in quality because of focus shift to Cinnamon?

  • @JonathanIsrael708 cinnamon will be the default in mint 13, so while it seems like a diversion at present actually it is just the mint future

  • *puke*

    Minimize and Maximize buttons...

    *puke*

  • Ubuntu 10.04 FTW!!!

  • @zpull77 i don't use dock as my dock would be tiny and long as hell. Programs are nicely sorted under menu button and thats all i need.

  • Do you only use Linux?

  • @TechChater

    yes

  • I was hoping that for Mint 13 they would just stick with MATE and the MGSE, and concentrate on fixing up bugs. I think the sudden switch to Cinnamon is a bit risky; I'm not sure how many people would stick with Mint if they released two buggy versions in a row because they keep changing the shell used. For Mint's sake, Cinnamon had better be more stable than what Mint 12 released with by the time 13 rolls out. That being said, it does look like a promising traditional desktop solution.

  • Arch For the WIN!!!

  • @YoungBud03

    alwayz ;)

  • Cinnamon looks promising, as for Brian's opinion he's entitled to think and say whatever he wants.

  • @BelaFleckFan

indeed. But he could of atleast got his info right first

  • @Linux4UnMe I guess not every Linux filmmaker on YouTube is as professional as you bro ;)

  • I think this is an improvement over Mint 12, which was a god awful mess.

  • @waynefoutz

this is too.... but I reckon they will have it sorted by Mint 13

  • @Linux4UnMe It's a step in the right direction at least, The problem is, everyone is trying to polish the turd that s Gnome-shell. You can knock Unity, but so far Canonical is the only one yet that I've seen make a functional desktop built on top of Gnome 3. My biggest issue with Gnome-shell is they still haven't fixed the issue with the fglrx drivers, they simply blame ATI, which is ridiculous, because fglrx works on every other desktop, including Unity. Me, I've moved to KDE, screw it.

  • @waynefoutz

hehe don't blame ya. I moved to xfce and e17

  • @zpull77 You can't reinvent bicycle. Most of us don't care about future, usability - thats whats important.

  • Excellent review! You're the first one that I've seen to actually show the different themes, broken as they are.

Cinnamon is a very interesting endeavour indeed. I really hope that the Mint team is successful with it. IMO it's really where Gnome Shell should have gone in the first place.

BTW, you pointed out that this was a fork of Gnome Shell rather than Gnome 3. At the risk of sounding stupid, what is the difference exactly?

I hope to see more Cinnamon reviews as it develops!

  • @RealityIsAnOpinion

well... obviously the gnome devs have different ideas on what they think think is an efficient Desktop paradigm... But it's good to see different spins of gnome-shell.

Ah, yeah Gnome 3 is the Desktop environment and Gnome-shell is the interfeace you see that runs on top of Gnome3. Ubuntu uses Gnome 3 also but they run Unity on top instead of gnome-shell.

  • you can do the disable of the gnome shell menu in the standard Linux Mint 12 by using dconf

  • As much as I hate Unity, I really think Ubuntu 12.04 is going to crush all competition. Simply because of all the deals they've made, and how much work they're putting into the Unity interface. What I am interested in seeing is where Deepin is going to go popularity and design wise.

  • @Live4TheGame1

I don't see 12.04 as being anything magnificant... they will improve Unity a little here and there but Most will still hate it imo. But we'll see what happens....

  • Once I get my laptop fixed, I plan to install Fduntu first and see how that goes. If I don't like it, I'll move over to Fedora with the Cinnamon Desktop.

  • Opensuse will take the lead, It's a more complete distro then any other I have seen this year. I don't understand why people don't promote it more.

  • @lnd305 cause on some lower end hardware, it tend to run like glue, LinuxMint is more lightweight, and has better hardware support, then Opensuse from testing, beside like the look of the default LinuxMint myself, and have even installed it on a few computer for my elder clients at my work, who know jack about a PC, and once shown the overview they are able to run LinuxMint with very few problems.

  • @lnd305

Opensuse is great... but it won't take the lead... no way ;)

  • Been running Cinnamon a few days. Might stick with it.

  • I think Brian (off of LAS) is right. The Linux Mint team is small and working on cinnamon desktop and all the mint additions is a lot of work for only 4 full time workers. I think that mint's popularity will go down a pick due to the possible loss of quality. With that being said I think this is the right move for Linux Mint and I feel that if they do focus on Cinnamon, the pay off will be great!

  • @Nekryu

well.... I don't see Cinammon as being that much hard work for them... everything is in place already.... they just need to integrate it better, fix some bugs and give it some polish. Exciting stuff anyways... we'll see what happens

  • Great review! Cinnamon looks quite promising. Thanks for the work you do for the Linux community!

  • @TinkerToy701

    thanx mate

  • I don't really care for all these forks.

All I want is for everything to work, and that includes the panel applets, compiz and all its plugins.

Btw, I don't see how all these different desktop environments is a good idea. There are already too many things to get familiar with when You as a user are checking out linux for the first time.

Just bring back gnome 2, make gnome 3/shell more customizable, and trash all these forks that are eventually not going to be around for a very long time anyway.

  • @blackoutworm You have a very blinkered outlook my friend. Given that Linux is all about freedom and choice your suggestion would limit freedom (as there's always KDE) but for all gnome using distro's choice would not exist. With regard to trashing forks, what a ridiculous suggestion. How, without forks of various technologies in Linux are we supposed to inovate and progress? I mean, without getting into semantics, Mint itself is a fork.

  • @9T9times if linux is all about freedom and choice. Then why did they cancel gnome 2 so that people have to make forks now? because that's why they do it. People build these forks because they miss gnome 2, its customization features and all that.

So instead of redeveloping a bunch of copies, they should do something productive and bring back gnome 2. These shitty forks will not be around for long. Why? Lack of resources and people to support these projects. How is that not obvious to you?

  • @blackoutworm I understand your point. Actually I hope Xfce will eventually be the new gnome 2 after a while. It's customizable but lacks some of plug and play features of gnome 2

  • @blackoutworm

This is what opensource is all about mate... the more choice the better. Otherwise you might aswell stick with the windows/apple world ;)

And nobody is forcing new users to try all the different desktop environments... if they pick ubuntu they get unity, if they pick mint they get cinnamon.... if they want to try something else out of curiosity they have that choice

  • @Linux4UnMe What if the choices you got are unstable and unfinished? Ubuntu released 11.04 with Unity, but it was far from stable.

And as I said, if opensource is about choices, why did they cancel something that most people love? Gnome 2 works like a charm.

So, why do we need improved gnome shell, and gnome 2 clones but buggier.

And these are the same people that are always saying. If it works, don't fix it.

    I'm just saying.

I'm all for improvement and all, but this is getting ridicules (IMO).

  • @blackoutworm From what I understand, a major reason the GNOME devs decided to pull the plug on GNOME 2 was because its age was getting in the way of maintaining it. GNOME 2 was filling up with old, unneeded code based on old technologies, and they decided it would be better to rewrite it all from scratch to get a cleaner code base using more modern techniques.

If it works, don't fix it; but if something breaks, it's better for the problem to at least be easier to fix.

  • @WarriorIng64 True. I just wish they wouldn't have changed the whole look and how everything works.

The main reason why I installed linux in the first place was because of compiz and the customizable panels with all the applets.

    Now it's all gone.

Hopefully compiz will work in the future, and maybe the extensions can make it look and feel more like it used to be.

It's not that I don't like change. But everything is too big and animated now. It's like a freaking comic book now, and it looks messy

  • how much does it use resources?

  • @nw0n

    havn't checked yet

  • Using LM12 with MATE myself. My main problem with Gnome Shell is that WINE games will somehow pause when you're not on the same workspace.

  • @lejonicom

    ah. that wouldn't suprise me

  • yes Linux mint 12 is crap y stay on mint 11

  • @Linux4unme kudus, linux action showww fans, actually it was Chris prediction that mint will fade like pclinux, and you know Chris is a huge mint fanboy.Cinamon is a step in the right direction,to get rid of all the reduncency of MGSE,but it is still a huge work if you want to keep maintaining your distro.

  • Dec 10th 2012 ?

December? Will it come out then ?
