When Mr. Powell made the comment of studying and understanding the English language, I believe he simply was implying that when you speak, one needs to make sure they are able to speak grammatically correct. So many people nowadays simply don't know to speak GRAMMATICALLY CORRECT.
I believe that's all he was saying... nothing racist (if that's where your head was)
@DNixon1922 I agree with DNixon. Did you all notice the final thing Colin Powell said was: "Nice to see you, son." This was a beautiful moment. The great Colin Powell was looking at this young man as a grandson. And his point about language may have been a critic of the way the young boy speaks, but it was mostly advice to him on how to become a great journalist. To be honest, the young Damon is likely to take on that advice and should. I loved this short, but sweet interview.
very good effort by the young reporter, thanks a LOT Secretary Powell for being so generous with your insights.. that young journalist and his school will probably have better lives from this experience.. bravo!
I love this kid.

I think what he meant was learn how to communicate - write, speak, express ideas and be curious.
