  • Sadly many people say this is 1 is the one that has been edited. They are wrong the 1 that clearly looks like a midget is the one that has been edited. They just have it backwards. They have record of a crane being on set that day!!!!!!

  • Watching the movie on my big screen. It's a large bird. I could see the wings and beak..

It was probably there just for background for the scene and it just didn't move until that part of the scene. If someone hung them self they wouldn't swing completely horizontal like that. Not without going down first.. And then they'd bob around a little.

  • No munchkin killing himself.......it is a crane or a large bird.

  • It was a bird stretching his wings out

  • 0:03 to the left of Scarecrow dude.

  • idiots,it's an ostrich

  • I doubt its suicide, but The Great Depression ushered suicide constantly and some people from the movie must know what happened and documented it.

  • it was that tex dude that commited suicide on that set, durin that scene, thats the set they found his body on.i cant think of his last name but it was tex somethin, look it up biggens.not a munchkin.

  • if it was a hanging, im sure the actors woulda seen it too then and there

  • Comment removed

  • @cupcakez1230 Type normal

  • I can't see it either, where in the frame are we meant to be looking and at what time exactly??

  • omf its a bird look you can clearly see the black pants n white shirt

  • I can't see the bird. Where is it?

  • It's a bird, if you watch the whole scene and just pay attention to that area you can see the bird over there chillin, pecking the ground and doing whatever it is that birds do then he spreads his wings at the end.

  • @B1GD34L its not a bird if you knew history you would know that the bady was actuly found in that same place and that they had to stop fix to get the dead person out of the film

  • BIRDY!

  • omg! a bird!

  • Nope not a bird deff. a niqqa that hung himself and they covered it up with a birdd.

simple as that these people are just too hard headed to relize that -.- smh.

  • @lilxni0mee - They didn't have the technology to digitally edit anything in 1939...and If they just "covered it up w/a bird", why is the same bird visible earlier in the scene, during If I Only Had a Heart? (Unless you subscribe to the absurd theory that they edited a bird into TWO separate scenes). Not to mention there's birds all over the set...for example, a little earlier, you can spot a peacock wandering near the Tin Man's cottage.

  • @WhatsAYak cool

  • First off it's Lynching, and if this were a suicide, it couldn't be a lynching. A lynching is an execution or murder via hanging, so a second person would have to be involved. Second, there was no cover up; the DVD version is cleaned up a bit making it easier to tell that it's just a bird. If they was going to do a cover up, I would think they would just remove the object form the scene. We have the technology to do that ya know. Lastly, it's only sick and twisted because you like it that way.

  • >look at screen name

    >see Dimmu Borgir

    >facepalm.jpg

  • its a emu, look it up.

  • its funny I never knew a munchkin could hame himself from a fake backdrop

  • They proved it was in fact bird . . . just saying.

  • It's a bird not a munchkin. This has been debunked thousands of times

  • wroung part

  • I dont believe its a munchkin, but i disagree with everyone saying its a bird. why would there be a bird on a movie set? its not outside...

  • @whimsical1992 the scen is shot on a sound stage but the scene is intended to look like a forest. there's a whole group of large birds a few minutes before this on the same stage. that was the point

  • Comment removed

  • @whimsical1992 they wanted the forest to look as real as possible for a dreamland so they threw in exotic birds

  • @kirasheart69 ah makes sense, and i saw another clip where its zoomed in and it is most definitely a bird stretching its wings haha.

  • did anyone else notice that the scarecrow fell? lol

  • @ilmbfdt hahaha

  • @ilmbfdt of course he fell! he has no bones xD

  • @kirasheart69 haha but he has nice strong straw!

  • that was a bird! people must be dumb enough to believe that it is a person! it's to big to be a munchkin!

  • Wow... the old version of the movie is sooooo different from the new one.besides why would there be a big ass bird on the set.........

  • My teacher showed us this clip from the original movie, but there was clearly a ladder falling and then something swayed out from the tree.. we replayed it and I've seen all the bird vids, and I can say that this one is a bird, but from the one he showed us... it was definitely different.

  • leave the guy alone, he clearly wanted to be famous before he died

  • A-well-a everybody's heard about the bird

B-b-b-bird, bird, bird, b-bird's the word

Bird, bird, bird, b-bird's the word

A-well-a bird, bird, bird, b-bird's the word

A-well-a bird, bird, bird, b-bird's the word

A-well-a bird, bird, b-bird's the word

A-well-a bird, bird, bird, b-bird's the word

A-well-a don't you know about the bird?

Well, everybody's talking about the bird!

A-well-a bird, bird, b-bird's the word

  • looks like that hun?

    but its not

    sorry.....

  • i think a bird commited suicide on the set

  • Dude, that's the giant bird I have the movie...

  • My theory: The munchkin climbed ON TOP OF the bird (Ostrich) then let the bird run out from under him, causing the swinging motion you can see on the original

  • who ever came up with the idea this was a wee dead guy like come on!!! its nothing even like a hanging dwarf it is clearly a bird. wise up a dead munchkin get a life loosers

  • it looks like a giant goose peeking his head out. ._.;;;

  • A munchkin never did kill himself. It was a BIRD! When this showed on tv and video (before the dvd) it had horrible quality and it looked like a person. Now that it's cleared up, you can clearly see the culprit is a BIRD!

  • its obviously a bird, and telling us to look at it in full mode proves its a bird.

  • see the black and white version (aka the original) its also a bird

  • Ummm... thats a bird

  • it is a birdif that vid was 3 secs longer u'd c its a bird!

  • I did not get the suicide thing AT ALL.

  • ok you guysjust ending this but you can clearly see that it IS in fact a bird or ''crane'' because at the end yo ucan clearly see the wings spread at the end and long neck pecking at the ground you can beleive what you want to beleive but if you do beleive that it's a munchkin you can beleive it but your absolutely wrong if you do

  • can anyone enlighten me as to wat im supposed to see?

  • its a dwarf y would they put a bird in the wizard of oz for and when u watch the whole movie u dont see any outher birds

  • They rented birds from the LA Zoo to make the scene look more oudoorsy, and you do see other birds in the film:

    - The crow who steals a piece of the Scarecrow's straw before "If I Only Had a Brain"

    - The one perched atop a talking apple tree @ the beginning of the Tin Man's first scene

    - The one visible in the background just before "If I Only Had a Heart"

    - The peacock wandering around the Tin Man's cottage

    So there ya go.

  • ya - and it's on set?

  • it's a crane (bird) from a previous scene. sorry to disappoint. they used to say that it was a woman's leg . . . people will see what they want to see, but it's obviously a white bird with a long beak if you really look at it.

  • sorry guys I watched another video and it clearly showed it and it was a bird so sorry for calling you guys stupid

  • it is NOT a bird you guys are fucking stupid

  • your fucken stupid!!! its a damn bird a "CRANE"

  • id fuckin kill myself if i had to listin to all that singing

  • lolz me 2

  • Its a bird

  • its a bird

  • yeah I mean you can even see the freakin bird several times during the Tin Man scene

  • You people are all so full of shit

  • Comment removed

  • Nope...no one but Judy Garland was ever considered for the part (save for a VERY brief look @ Shirley Temple), and why would someone who didn't get a part be hanging around a closed film set long after they would've been told to get lost? Besides, given the cutthroat nature of the biz, anyone who'd kill themselves over not getting a film role wouldn't last a week in Hollywood! LOL

  • Crane*

  • Well if it is a cran, it sure made a mark on the movie years and decades later.

  • What is the fucking point of a Munchkin Suicide?

  • cuz it's controversial. humans looove drama ;]

  • we all know it was an old film, but that is not a munchkin!!

  • PLEASE HELP ME!! I don't understand what i have to see here!! what is the problem on that specific scene???

  • look in da back right in da middle

  • ok and?? can u elaborate on what people or what is it?? Why suicide?? Is it a fact a true thing or just a stupidity people made to make it look more Big??

  • basically it's a bird flapping the wing is all....but it's a fun legend I guess....

  • look right in da middle of the trees u see sumtin move go 2 another youtube video so u can see it closer

  • look in the trees when they walk pass

    you see something shiny

    and its a bird

  • is it suposed 2 b at 0:04 were the tin man's arm is?

  • im not sure there is prob not and ostrich on the set but it is the 1930's so they wouldnt have the technoligy to cut that stuff out i think its like a falling object or the killing but idk?

  • it's a crane.

  • I believe it was a person. I mean it's a fake set why would there be a bird? You don't have make comments or agree with me but this is what I think.

  • There are birds in other shots. The bird in question is actually seen when the Tin Man stumbles backwards just before "If I Only Had A Heart" starts.

  • Indeed...there's also a peacock that can be seen wandering around by the Tin Man's cottage. Why are people so quick to believe someone could hang themselves during filming w/o a single person noticing, yet question the idea of birds being placed on an indoor set?

  • Nope, it was a crane brought in..

  • Haven't we already established that it wasn't an actor,but a bird??

*sigh* People don't read snopes anymore.

  • They read it, but some don't wanna give up clinging to their belief that a Munchkin really did commit suicide on the set, despite all evidence to the contrary.

  • I guess everyone loves hollywood myths

  • @MonkeyOctober its left to the bird

  • Now everyones going to come on here and act all smart because they just read about this on yahoo.

  • the editor probably didnt notice it because this was the 1930s and primitive.

  • whatever. i think its bogus. theres no way to tell what it was, its not close up enough.

  • Actually, you CAN tell...when the song first starts, you can see the bird bending its long neck, and near the end of the scene, it clearly spreads its wings.

  • i meant how could someone hang themself on a painting!

  • ok just stop! its a freakin bird. if you zoom in on it you can see it bend over and like smell the ground or something then it extended its wings. they brought a whole bunce of them in to make it look more realistic. besides the whole backround was PAINTED how could someone hang themself on a hanging. yeah chew on that.

  • .........The stupidity and ignorance of some people never ceases to amaze me....

  • Its one of the sand hill cranes that they used for the scene with the birds. Someone accidentally kicked the support the bird was on and startled it and it extended its wings

  • even robot chicken believes its a hanging muchkin they put on one of there videos and if yah dont believe try finding it urself

  • .....As if Robot Chicken has any authority when it comes to this kind of thing... Honestly..

  • yea i saw the "i wanna run away" "i wanna go home" (dead munchkin) "i was home all alone"

  • Oz wasn't the first color production, there were plenty before it...and why couldn't they just reshoot the scene? Not like they couldn't afford it...this was MGM, one of the biggest studios in Hollywood, and how could all those people on the set not notice if something was amiss? Oh, and Mervyn LeRoy had one son and no daughters, so that's def not true.

  • It was a bird you fuckin asshole

  • FUCKIN BIRD IN THE TREEHOUSE BRO

    come on now

  • Theres Nothing!

  • i used to believe this but then i looked at it on my tv and its a bird TRUST ME THEY WOULDVE REFILMED IT

  • definitely a munchkin. definitely

  • it's funny how people who think that's really a hanging munchkin don't realise that if someone were to commit suicide during the filming of a scene, the scene would be RE-FILMED. It's not rocket science. THAT is a BIRD.

  • It WAS taken out of the movie

  • No it wasn't...I have every VHS/DVD release from 1989-onward, and the scene looks exactly the same in all of them.

  • You're full of shit, I have personally seen versions WITH this object dangling in the background....and in later years WITHOUT. If you go and get a copy of this now, it ISN'T there. Quit talking out of your ass, you're making a god damned fool of yourself.

  • You're the one who's making a fool of yourself...if you don't believe me, read the intro to Aljean Harmetz's 1998 updated edition of "The Making of The Wizard of Oz"...it discusses the remastering process for the film's reissue that same year, and there's nary a mention of this alleged "suicide".

Prove me wrong, then...post a video of this earlier version w/the object intact...oh, let me guess, you don't have it, right? Just as I suspected...can we say "manufactured memory"? LOL

  • They edited it out of the new DVD version, but it is a bird.

They let a whole lot of birds loose for that specific scene, but they're hardly noticeable.

If it was a suicide, why would it have taken so long for anybody to notice the dead body just hanging around there?

It's not like they couldn't reshoot the scene.

  • Correct on everything except it being edited out of the most recent DVD release (no reason to take it out, right?)...I checked my copy of the 05 release, and sure enough, the bird was still there.

And notice how whenever you tell a member of the "hanging Munchkin" crowd to put up or shut up, they always choose the latter...the description of "big on talk, short on evidence" fits them to a T.

  • really? everybody told me that it was taken out. I have the DVD, but I didn't look.

  • They were mistaken. :-) Take a look, there's no missing it...same spot, clear as day.

  • it looks like hes hanging himslef until the bird shows its wings....

  • All of you saying this is a bird... how come they edited it out of the remastered version of the movie?

  • They didn't...nothing was visually altered in the remastering process, the only changes being 2 minor audio tweaks (muffling the roar of the tornado from inside Dorothy's house, for better perspective, and restoring a thunderclap that orig. preceded the Witch's Munchkinland disappearance).

Besides, how could someone sneak onto a closed set and kill themselves in full view of an entire film cast/crew, yet go completely unnoticed?

  • Because of the rumor.

It's a lot easier just to take it out then try to explain to a bunch of people what it really is.

  • It looks like either a big bird or a guy caught upside down. A person hanging themselves has this horrible limp look to them, and not to mention it's coming from their neck. Who wants to die hanging upside down?

  • ugh I love a great conspiracy... all u people saying its a bird is really ruining the fun in thinking that it really was a munchkin committing suicide! lol

  • ...How the Hell is that NOT a bird?

It in no way shape or form even resembles a person. Much less a person hangning themselves.

  • Yea. Its a bird. People are still talking about this?

  • ahh thats kindas scary thoguh even if it wasnt suicide lol just to see that and not EXACTLY know what iit is

  • No one hung themselves, relax... It's a crane, a bird. Snopes did an investigation; to quote the Wiki entry for Wizard of Oz:

"Rumors that the completed film shows an actor who played one of the Munchkins committing suicide by hanging in the background of one scene have been shown to be false; the object in question is actually a wild crane used to populate the forest scene."

  • all u retards who belive the rumor. look at 0:04 what do u call that? the munchkin doing a summersault? i call that a bird spreading it's wings. use ur minds. those of you who belive the rumor reply to what happens at 0:04

  • It is the peacock from the previous scene spreading its wings out .Not sure how it died.

  • To me, it looks like one of the munchkins hanging...with the rope around his waist. It looks like he tied the rope around his waist and went on a little "plane" trip. Doesn't look like a bird, but not a suicidal hanging either...

  • Comment removed

  • It does look like

  • i always thought this shit was creepy

  • the birds been there since the scene started - if you look in the background

  • This is not suiced this is a Bird pecock that the rented from the zoo to make the movie look like they were ina jungkle with many animals

  • why would they randomly put a bird there?? kus they're hiding the suicidal muchkin! omg

  • It is a stork flapping its wings. It is really just bird!!

  • they only said that they rented a bird and stuff so that they wont have to like do so much things about a suicide. He actually did hang himslef but this is the newer version on the older one u can see it clearly. He hung himslef cuz he couldnt get the role . and think about it. why would they know about the bird and just let it stay there?! so thats why they made an excuse.
  • Um, no...I've explained why the bird was there, and think about it: if someone really had been turned down for the role, why would he still be hanging around long after being told to get lost, let alone on a closed set? Also, the fact that no one can agree on the alleged hanging Munchkin's name, reason for his "suicide", etc. is usually a sign that a rumor's false.

  • fuckin creepy

  • it int no god damn midget

  • lol, yeah birds always hang out on movie sets hahaha NOT

  • They rented them from the LA Zoo to make the scene more realistic, look it up.

  • They rented them from the LA Zoo to make the scene look more outdoorsy.

  • its a bird...listen to the commentary on the 2-disc special edition of this movie and the Wizard of Oz historian says its a bird...

  • What many feel is a munchkin in the process of hanging themselves is actually the first know filming of Bigfoot himself. This is well documented in the book "Legends & Marvels". You need not believe me. Order the book on Amazon and read it for yourselves. It's good reading and many of the stories are fascinating. All of it true and it shows how rumors can get twisted to fit the whims of some misguided people.

  • If you look very carefully, there's a group of gnomes performing a sacrifice ritual on a flying pig.

  • y'all bitches best recognize that dat shyt ain't no bird it's a muffukin' midg bitch who ain't no lolly hayyy

  • pause 0:05 and can u spot of 9 ghosts of faces and heads and a hand on the trees. Shocking. No one notices it. My 1st time ever seen. I did post all of WIZARD OF OZ on youtube which have ghosts. This one can't see the white flash ghost on the yellow brick road beacuse this colour. Go to the blak and white can see the white flash ghost on the yellow brick road.

  • dude youre fuckign right i looked around and i saw he face of a vampire

  • Btw, how the fuck can a man hang himself on a painting..Think Logically!

  • It is true, Wikipedia it

  • Maybe you should take another look @ the Wiki entry yourself...it says that the alleged suicide was "proven to be false"

  • Maybe you should take another look at when I posted the comment, plenty of time for someone to change it as it is possible :p

  • That is true, but said statement includes a reference to the Snopes page debunking the "hanging" story.

  • what your seeing is a bird spreading out it's wings..the bird is a Crane which happens to be a giant bird! Since the Wizard of Oz was recorded in a Zoo with lots of birds they added some birds to give it a realistic effect. and of course we all can tell the backround is a painting so the bird looks huge standing next to the painting. there are other parts of the movie where the bird spreads his wings and it's wingspan is approximantly 6 feet long. so it gives it the apperance of a man swinging.

  • its a crew member operating a pully you bunch of dopes. there was no one killed in the making of this movie. people are so stupid

  • holy shit!!! i saw the dead dude!!!!!!

  • its a bird spreading its wing out. What you are seeing is the birds wing opening and closing. If you look to the left you will see the actual bird.

  • yes i agree with ninetails97; he did kill himself becuz he didnt get the part and tried to ruin the movie

  • Ninetails is mistaken; the casting process is well-documented, and no one killed themselves after being rejected/turned down/forced to give up a role...besides, why would they still be hanging around the set if they'd long since been told to get lost? Not to mention they had security posted outside the studio door for much of the shooting sched, and how could the entire cast/crew not notice a suicide right in front of them and continue filming?

  • uhhh , it doesnt look like a bird it's attached to the tree , and it's not a hanging because it spins to the right , it doesn't drop vertically.

  • this is the real story a man didnt get the part as the lion so he hung himself trying to ruin the movie true story

  • the man diddnt want to be the lion bec then he would be to short not only that but tht man wanted to get a role for the lollipop kid trust me i went to a show like last year and i saw some of the munchickens no lie in the real movie you can also tell that they have fake heads on and they were about my sisters age right now which is 7or8

  • wrong!

  • No, it's not a "true story"...only Bert Lahr was ever considered for the role of the Lion, and the only other consideration given for the role was a brief look @ having the part played by a REAL lion, w/an anonymous actor's voice dubbed in, which was quickly rejected.
