As a bit of added proof for legitimacy my coach for weightlifting at the Olympic training center who is 70 years old got a gold medal in 76' and he is more fit, agile, and pain free than the majority of people that come in once a week or not at all to lift. Stopping at 90 WILL fry your knees because the quad strains so hard when the levers are in that position.
@suedeal1 not so true. First you ALWAYS want to work in full range of motion on your squats. That means going past 90 with knees past toes straight back etc. 2d most body builders and power lifters DON'T do these kind of squats and injuries with those lifting styles are far more common than in Olympic lifting where you see the kind of squats your mentioning in training.
psolarhidi: Have you ever worked out with competitive bodybuilders and power lifters ? I have. What you see on TV or at the competitions does not reflect what goes on after the competition or after the athlete's careers is over. I'm here to tell you that most of these men and women hurt most of the time. Any elite bodybuilders or power lifers out there? Tell me if I'm wrong. Excessive deep squats will eventually fry the patella tendon and put pot marks in the meniscus.
i am 70 kg and i managed to do 1 rep with 36kg (i have two kettlebells, one 16 kg and one 20 kg). i'm trying to increase my 1RM. should i just continue doing singles with as heavy as i can go?
@psolarhidi do you have access to plates or can you somehow adjust the amount of weight you're using? What worked for me the best was staying in the 4-8 rep zone , trying to get more reps with the same weight then increase the load and start over. As far as singles go, I wouldn't do them in every workout.
Good stuff man. I think I can manage ~30 kg on my left leg... the only problem is I can't hold them for too much (my shoulders are weak as shit isometrically).
You are right about that culprido, but you can't build strong, powerful legs without overloading the muscles with heavy weight. Ivoryshark, going below parallel on squats is bad for the ligaments, tendons and joints. Just ask any orthopedic surgeon. I'm a 53 year old weight lifter who still can do squats with over 400 lbs. I never went below parallel. Many of my peers did. Many have had hip and knee replacements because of that.
@suedeal1 and yet so many olympic weightlifters do ATG squats every day with imense weights(pyrros dimas had 330 KG (full) back squat and 290 kg front squat) and have long and healthy careers and healthy joints too. if however some powerlifters fucked up their knees doing full squats wrong because of having shitty mobility and flexibility, that doesn't mean that full squats are bad.
I have a question that I hope someone can answer. I was told once that you shouldn't go down as low as the guy in this video because of something to do with the tdeons or ligaments being extended to far and it's somehow bad on the knee. I want to know if this is true or not. And if you could please provide a source to cite why or why not. Thanks.
Holly crap man... I can't even do that with no weight. I have legs like toothpicks... :P But feel free to check my channel if you want to see a couple of quite hard strength exercises and try them out.
notice most of these guys who demo one legged squats have little to now leg development. It's because this exercise is more about balance and flexibility instead power and strength. Want to see how strong you legs are ? Get on a leg press machine and see how much you can lift 15 time. You'll know then. This is just playing around.
Unless you're built for squatting I wouldn't go under 5 reps. As for suggestions, go to t-nation find a program and stick to it. Box squats, ghr's, gm's are good assistance exercises but the focus should be on squats themselves.
start with a weight that alows you to make 5 reps with proper forms and stick with it until you can make 8 after increase the weight and start again...
are your legs that well built from mainly this exercise? i'm hopeless at the back squat but can go ass to grass with this one, strangely i need some weight just to stop from falling back but hope to up the kilos soon. Great job man
thanks. my leg program is built around two exercises: pistols and high rep back squats. I would say the back squat is better for mass but there are times when I only do pistols and it seems to work. so just keep up but watch out for your knees.
Nice. Would a good way to use weights be to strap on a backpack instead of holding them out in front as you mentioned its easier for you to do pistols holding a 10k then without anything
I would say there is. At least to a certain point, you won't squat more than 150 kg from just doing pistols. But the reverse is more true, if you have the technique right.
LOL look at that old lady in the back..................... dude i wish i could do that...... i cant do one legged squats properly, i have no balance at all.
Always warm up properly, strengthen the glutes and the hamstrings, as weakness in those areas can lead to knee pain, make sure you're using the proper form, the knees shouldn't dive inward.
Try holding a smaller plate straight out, it should help achieving good form, I found that using a small plate helps with the balance. For me it's easier to do pistols with a 10 kg plate than doing them with my bodyweight.
If it's too hard just hold onto something whilst you do them.
Actually that was a very inspiring video on leg strength and it is also the first time I've seen some one Pistol Squat that much weight with perfect form. I am wondering have you ever tried jumping pistol Squats, I have seen videos of people doing a pistol and then jumping to a platform in a standing postion but I have never seen anyone trying to just pistol squat and jump up from the bottom position, could you give it a try and film it!?!?!?!?! Also post me so I can check it out!
Well, thanks for the comment. To be honest I never felt the urge to try jumping pistols. I will give them a go and tell you what I think. As for the video, I can't promise I'll make one.
Holy sh.. That was awesome, kinda makes me want to start running again, to gain my leg stamina back.. But oh well, couple years of slacking can do amazing damage to your stamina xD
this is an approximate squat of 170kg, not taking into consideration balance and range of motion needed for the pistol

Great stuff, the one bad thing about one-legged squats is that it is almost impossible to have a neutral back and still go all the way down.

@zollup What can you do to get yourself to the one legged squat level? Just do regular squats?

@Icecube88 Yep. Or you can try hand assisted pistols, when you hold onto something to keep your balance and to make it easier. Have fun with them!

You would land on your ass, or at least I did. If the weight is on your back it screws up your balance.
But try it, maybe it works for you.
