@Minecraftineer998 Wikipedia says that most of the film was shot in Canada, after Amtrak backed out of the production over objections to some of the scenes (especially the crash at the end.)
This was my favorite movie scene when I was a kid...we would seriously drop everything we were doing and keep dead quiet until Gene Wilder said the train looked like it was grinning whenever this movie was on...fond memories :-)
Something's not right...a train going at full speed wouldn't have stopped...even if it plowed through a station...into the street and probably through a couple of more buildings before stopping...
My Dad took me to see this movie, when I was 14, because he loved trains and he loved Jill Clayburgh. I was just glad to see the Willy Wonka guy again.
Most of the interior station scenes set both in Kansas City and Chicago actually show Toronto's Union Station, except for a brief sequence immediately prior to the crash where the train is rapidly approaching a bumper at the end of the line. That sequence was filmed from a Hi-Rail truck, entering the Chicago and North Western Railway's downtown Chicago terminal.
Sadly, there happend to few. A nice end would have been, if the engine explodes, and pulverizes the complete station, and the area around it. I think, there a need to make a reamake with more realistik destruction.
@Gleiswanderer Actually this is realistic. Back in the 1950's, a GG1 electric locomotive experienced problems with its brakes. This caused the train to punch through the wall in Grand Central Station in NYC, and into the terminal building itself. The engine then fell through the floor and into the basement below. No explosion. In fact, they left it there and planked over because the president was visiting the next day. It was three days before they removed it and it still ran after repairs.
at :13 the train shows to be heading in the track to the right of the platforms.... yet at :15 it's in the middle with a track on the right of it with baggage carts all over, and then at :36 it's back on the right track again... at 1:39 the train is back on a middle track again rolling to a stop with another track to the right of it.
I watched this movie once in my life, I was 4 years old, but I never forgot this scene ja ja. Now that I take the Metra almost every morning it reminds of this movie that I only saw once in my life.
That's the actual name of the terminal station which is depicted in the movie and where the point-of-view-footage of the final approach into the station was filmed.
wow, i just love the largely scaled down locomotive at the end, haha. they couldn't even fit into the locomotive. still, the effects were astonishing.
@panteraville931 I've been in the cab of an F unit at a museum, and it is actually the right size. It's shorter because the trucks and fuel tank got sheared off in the crash. As far as the size of the cab, it is a tight fit for a full-grown adult like myself.
today they would NEVER use a real train and crash it... it'd be done with CGI or toy trains... this is why movies of the past were better, they didn't have the technology we had today, they had to do the REAL thing

0:45, you can clearly see that it's just the outer shell of the Locomotive being rolled forward on some kind of flat-bed. xD

@darkyoda Actually, the accident was in Washington D.C's station, not NYC's grand central station
Owner4567 9 months ago
@Owner4567 yeah, I realize that now. However the point remains that the way this accident was shown is realistic.
