I find this movie very touching indeed. It's one of the few movies that really changed my views of certain things in life. The ending somehow fits because it gives us time to stop and reflect on everything they have gone through. The main point of it all is the importance of moving on with life and letting go of the past; reestablishing connection was never the point. Sometimes, it is best to let go and move on. This is really a masterpiece.

I find it very unfair that Takaki is the only one who had an unhappy ending.. his girlfriend got married to someone else, he lost his job, always alone thinking about the past... unable to move on

@moneyparade It's not as sad as you think, I too thought the exact same thing until I read somebody else's comment. He didn't lose his job, he quit it. The reason he looked so sad and depressed was the late hours his dead end job was causing him to work. Finally after quiting his job he was able to move on to better things which goes for Akari. At the end he sees Akari and instead of bringing back up the past he decides to let her move on, also he smiles at the end because he fulfils the promise

@moneyparade I think what made this movie so special was that it wasn't per say the happiest ending but what the ending taught you. Things don't always work out the way we want them to, just like cherry blossoms we start off together but in the end we slowly drift apart. But yeah I wish they ended up getting together as well :P

@Elvirannn she was a girl that Takaki tried to establish a relationship with when he moved to Tokyo, perhaps in hope to escape the loneliness of the present. However, he was too obsessed with the past which ultimately led to their short-lived relationship being ended abruptly. That girl, like Kanae, probably was really in love with him.
