@scottd38 The debt ceiling is for the budget that was ALREADY passed. It's not new spending, it's making good on what has already been agreed to. If it doesn't go up we default on what has already been decided. World markets could crash and we go back into deep recession. If it happens, it'll be morons like you that made it happen.

Actually, your "facts" are simply incorrect. The sum total of earth's volcanic emissions is one 1/150th of the total human emissions of CO2. This makes sense, since we are literally taking mountaintops worth of coal and oil and dumping them into the atmosphere. Increased CO2 can up photosynthetic rates but CO2 is not the only greenhouse gas. Methane and N2O actually inhibit photosynthesis. Besides it's obvious plants are not keeping up since CO2 levels are increasing in the atmosphere.

The gas prices are due to Wall Street. Period. The production in the United States is up and the demand is down.
The big oil companies even stated before Congress a few weeks ago that the price would be more like $60 -70 if Wall Street wasn't playing with the price market.
Keep in mind that in 2008 the price went from 60 to 140 and back down to 30. We need to curb the speculation.

Increasing drilling won't decrease gas prices, which are based on investors tying up oil to artificially increase prices. For that we need to regulate the financial industry that currently allows such speculating.
What the GOP doesn't want you to know, is that it has fought for decades to deregulate the financial and oil industries, and what we see now is record prices and profits for the top 2%, and a recession for the rest of us.

The DOE estimates that we have a 1.124 TRILLION barrels of known oil reserves available in the U.S.; and worldwide that only a third of known oil reserves are used. Without even getting into shale oil, we have a massive supply of oil remaining, if consumption doubles, we've got a century of oil without imports.
@AreThereNoMoreNames I don't know where you're getting your "facts" from, but we currently bring in 51% of our oil. We definitely do not have anywhere near that much in known reserves, if you count oil shales maybe. *Proven* oil reserves amount to about 20 billion barrels. Which at a rate of 7 billion barrels gives you 3 years of self sustaining oil. Oops. The other problem is you can't get all of the oil out instantly. Drilling for oil takes YEARS to produce results.
@FirriTriah What we bring in is irrelevant to what we could have, as there's an artificial supply restriction created because of 0bama's moratorium on drilling. And it's true, some of the oil isn't as easily available as other oil, but we're getting better and better at getting it. We used to only ever drill for what will come up on it's own; about 10%, but secondary recovery methods have pushed that up to getting up to 40% of the oil out. Who's to say that we won't be getting 80% out soon.
@AreThereNoMoreNames You're still missing the point. Even if we started drilling in every possible location it would be 10 years before we saw any of the oil. And the amount of oil compared to the total supply is minimal. So, still not going to affect gas prices.

@scottd38 Even with new figures we still have around 10% of the world's oil, not counting shale. US shale oil is not developed like in Alberta. It will take time before it reaches full production. Oil is not an unlimited resource IT WILL RUN OUT. And while you destroy areas of the country getting it out (tar sands are much harder on the environment than conventional oil), you'll still end in the same place. You're just like the morons in the 18th century that wanted to mine the grand canyon.

@scottd38 Saudi Arabia hasn't increased production in the face of increasing demand. In fact their production has dropped somewhat. Sign of a shortage? A lot of people are reading it that way. That's only one of many factors playing into oil prices. Government can provide money for research where immediate commercial benefit is unlikely, which is the case with emerging energy technologies. Private research is good but if there is no monetary gain by the end of 5 years or so, it won't be done.

Actually, your "facts" are simply incorrect. The sum total of earth's volcanic emissions is one 1/150th of the total human emissions of CO2. This makes sense, since we are literally taking mountaintops worth of coal and oil and dumping them into the atmosphere. Increased CO2 can up photosynthetic rates but CO2 is not the only greenhouse gas. Methane and N2O actually inhibit photosynthesis. Besides it's obvious plants are not keeping up since CO2 levels are increasing in the atmosphere.

The gas prices are due to Wall Street. Period. The production in the United States is up and the demand is down.
The big oil companies even stated before Congress a few weeks ago that the price would be more like $60 -70 if Wall Street wasn't playing with the price market.
Keep in mind that in 2008 the price went from 60 to 140 and back down to 30. We need to curb the speculation.

Increasing drilling won't decrease gas prices, which are based on investors tying up oil to artificially increase prices. For that we need to regulate the financial industry that currently allows such speculating.
What the GOP doesn't want you to know, is that it has fought for decades to deregulate the financial and oil industries, and what we see now is record prices and profits for the top 2%, and a recession for the rest of us.

The problem is allowing commodity speculation. Speculation raises consumer prices. Loopholes in energy and financial laws allow companies and investors to engage in reckless, irresponsible trading, passing the costs to us at the register.

The USA uses 25% of the world's oil and has about 2% of the reserves. A 2nd grader can figure out that drilling isn't going to help us much in reducing oil prices. So yes you're stuck with that "green energy" stuff, like it or no.

@FirriTriah I'm not sure where you're getting your myths from, but in 2010 the U.S. used just shy of 7 billion barrels of oil, out of a total of about 90 billion barrels used worldwide. The DOE estimates that we have a 1.124 TRILLION barrels of known oil reserves available in the U.S.; and worldwide that only a third of known oil reserves are used. Without even getting into shale oil, we have a massive supply of oil remaining, if consumption doubles, we've got a century of oil without imports.

We definitely do not have anywhere near that much in known reserves, if you count oil shales maybe. *Proven* oil reserves amount to about 20 billion barrels. Which at a rate of 7 billion barrels gives you 3 years of self sustaining oil. Oops. The other problem is you can't get all of the oil out instantly. Drilling for oil takes YEARS to produce results.

@FirriTriah What we bring in is irrelevant to what we could have, as there's an artificial supply restriction created because of 0bama's moratorium on drilling. And it's true, some of the oil isn't as easily available as other oil, but we're getting better and better at getting it. We used to only ever drill for what will come up on it's own; about 10%, but secondary recovery methods have pushed that up to getting up to 40% of the oil out. Who's to say that we won't be getting 80% out soon.

@scottd38 Even with new figures we still have around 10% of the world's oil, not counting shale. US shale oil is not developed like in Alberta. It will take time before it reaches full production. Oil is not an unlimited resource IT WILL RUN OUT. And while you destroy areas of the country getting it out (tar sands are much harder on the environment than conventional oil), you'll still end in the same place. You're just like the morons in the 18th century that wanted to mine the grand canyon.

@scottd38 Saudi Arabia hasn't increased production in the face of increasing demand. In fact their production has dropped somewhat. Sign of a shortage? A lot of people are reading it that way. That's only one of many factors playing into oil prices. Government can provide money for research where immediate commercial benefit is unlikely, which is the case with emerging energy technologies. Private research is good but if there is no monetary gain by the end of 5 years or so, it won't be done.

Green doesn’t work and does not pay for its self..slowing our drilling reduces the supply raising the cost.
