@ross1manley....yes, you pay inside. admission to most of the tents is free, but make sure you get there earlier in the day....by around 8 pm, many of the tents are so crowded they limit access. The beers aren't cheap (probably around 10 euros, or about 12-13 bucks each), but they're huge steins, and probably equal 2 or three standard beers. One more thing, which you probably know: in Munich, Oktoberfest begins mid September and ends the first Sunday in October.
I've been lucky enough to go to several Oktoberfests in Munich, and it's the funnest experience of my life. Like.......the best wedding reception you've ever been to, times 10. Put it on the "bucket list."
