  • Excellent musicianship and a beautiful instrument. What more could one ask for!

  • Ok.

I fucking love Blink, I went to their concert in Bologna last year (i'm Italian)...I discovered them when I was 13. Now i'm 16, I still listen to them just because I have fun with them!

But THIS, this is GOOD MUSIC!!

Shit, wake up you Blink's fans! Buy one or two of their album, enjoy yourself and then start listening something better!!!

  • excellent

  • If only you were a thumber! My dad has been a bass payer as long as i can remember and he is a thumber. I think if you tried you could do it. Have only met 2 other people that could thumb!

  • im such a whore

  • Blinks josie is better than this. But if any of you think blink is great your wrong. you want GOOD bass playing, listning to geddy lee of rush. That shits GOOD.

  • if you have time to learn this you have time to write your own shit. don't waste your time learning other peoples stuff.

  • Smooth as hell.

  • nice job! we should jam this tune

  • Nice performance!!

    from Tokyo, Michael kawabe

  • Did I understand your in alabama? Our band is looking for a great bass player. interested?

    Dan

  • Wonderfull bassline, superb playing !

    Thumbs up, Sir.

  • i would like to have a steely dan tribute

  • Blink 182? I can't believe I clicked on a Steely Dan video and saw mention of that fluff. Fucking kids.

  • excellent cover great, smooth style... thanks for posting another tune for me to practice after studying your video...

  • you sound really great! love your tone.... I wanna cover this one soon! =] =] YEAH STEELY DAN!

  • Very Righteous Bass line!

  • Gawd!! Please don't ever confuse Steely Dan's "Josie" w/ Blink 182's "Josie".

    Gimme the Dan's "Josie" ANYDAY!!!

  • Bravo

  • GROOOVYY

  • Nice well done...if I had a tribute band I would ask you along!!!

  • Good job. You make it look so easy. How long have you been playing?

  • Thanks. I've been playing for over 10 years now. Though this video is 3.5 years old.

  • Dang, Very good!

  • Great playin' man!

That bass of yours sounds amazing. But what do they say, it's all in the fingers!

  • Way to nail Chuck's groove. One of the most talented and tasteful bass players of that age or any age.

  • That tone is beautiful.

  • Incredible. I look down expecting to see the usual comments on the bassist's skills and the awesome music and instead I find a bunch of exalted twelve-year-olds shouting out incoherences and arguing about things well beyond their understanding. It's clear as water to anybody with any musical background that Blink 182 is like a fart in the history of music compared to Steely Dan; they contributed nothing new, are mediocre to the very last degree and within a few years won't even be remembered.

  • What is this Blink you speak of?

  • btw is that a ken lawrence bass? it sounds great... how much are those?

  • are you serious?

Blink? I used to like that band in like 7th grade man.....when I didn't know anything about music.... or anything for that matter...

    Steely Dan wins.. Sorry.

  • blink is mediocre sell outs pussy, dont even try comparing them to this, the only one in that band who has skill is travis barker, he's only good in the Transplants. Blinks bassist cant even be compared to this

  • Scott Raynor was a better drummer.

  • Well done...

  • This kicks major Ass! Great job!!!! 5 stars

  • That sounds great. Love the Pops.

  • Very nice going.

  • HAHHAHAHAHA!!!! Blink plays the same fucking chord progression and changes key for different "songs", and yet when you go see them live you can't even tell what song they're supposed to be playing...

Blink is garbage, and has all but been forgotten until this new and "epic" return of theirs, meanwhile people are still listening to steely dan 30 years later.

30 years from now you will be embarrassed by what you used to like. promise.

  • Really? No band is better than Blink live? You've obviously never been to a Who concert. Oh, and after having listened to them, Blink is shit. Steely Dan's Josie is a masterpiece; Blink's is garage band trash.

  • @bassandguitarplayer with the exception of "Rock Show" ALL of Blink's material is tween pop trash. groove and feel beats speed any day.

  • Blink is UNIQUE?! Mixing Jazz, Fusion, and Rock was unique... Eschewing the hippie drug culture was unique.

Blink 182 made 6 albums of the same few riffs, how is that unique? The chorus of "What's my age again" is the verse of GreenDay's "when I come around" while also being the same chord progression as Dammit's chorus albeit in a different key.

No member of blink could even play part of a Steely Dan song besides maybe Travis Barker who is also epically over rated. Global Worming? wtf..

  • hell yeahhh! rock on man!

  • This post is a joke. It HAS to be. I refuse to believe it is anything else...

  • Well it sure sounds like one. And it made me laugh. Those are my requirements for a joke. HAHA

  • good playing, these Steely dan song are tricky

  • That was amazing. People like you make me want to switch from guitar to bass.

  • Well said! You're playings great buddy. I'm a guitarist and this type of stuff has my attention now and I wanna learn bass so I can play this type of stuff! Very nice playing!

  • You are really fantastic player. Would you mind if I used one of your songs on a video sometime. Thanks.

  • Thanks. Feel free, though this isn't one of my songs...

  • great tone and playing!

  • Very smooth and relaxed. Good playing.

  • Good Job

  • nice work.

Sounds great. I think I should play this song, too.

    sounds like fun ^^

  • Great work, mate!!! 5/5

    Fabio

  • Oh man. Way to destroy my mind with that spot on bass cover. This is song is so funky... and that intro... it just feels like the world is crashing down around me.

  • are you in the Navy?

  • Ha, no. The shirt is from "Aviation Challenge", a flight camp that I went to for a week in Alabama.

  • you the man, do you mind to share what are your bass settings and amplification, your tone sounds nice.

  • The tone comes from the bass itself and my fingers. I almost always keep my EQ flat. And I'm not playing through an amp. Just plugged in direct for recording.

  • Awesome, and accurate playing. Bass has a nice tone also.

  • good!!

  • Greg, Your tone and style are second to none!! After watching you play this song for MONTHS,,, this (the video response, posted above)is as close as I can get. Thanks for posting the DAN!!!

  • Simply awesome I love your style.

  • Nice job. Nice bass, too. Keep it up!

    Beebebop,

    Beijing.

  • Nice job....

  • stellar. this has always been one of my favourite basslines. good job.

  • nothing better than a funky bassline. great job

  • FUNKY! Hey are you "Lokire" on the Talk Bass Forums?

  • Thanks. Yep, that's me. Though this vid is a couple years old now.

  • wonderful tone...one of the best!!!

    what bass is this?

  • Thanks. It's a Ken Lawrence bass.

  • Steely Dan is a great rock band with lots of influential jazz methods, keep it up

  • Subschool5, I think you should know that even I was playing the same wrong notes for years until very recently when I took the time to listen to the tune again. Steely stuff to me is sacred - like classical music - and should be played as was originally recorded. Again GBagley, you're very talented.

  • Hey man top stuff.. I'm doin this song for uni and you've helped me quite a bit cuz the transcription they gave me was shit! hope u dont mind ive used some of ur fills hehe ;)

  • nice! great tone too

  • Great sound!! Thanks!!

  • Wrong notes at "girls say when...". some other places too, but good feel. Work on your time, thenmaster the notes.

  • Wrong notes? When you say hello to someone, is it exactly the same every time? No, it's just important that it's said a certain pleasant way.

  • nice groovin

  • Sounded great.. you've got amazing feel. And besides.. a little ad-lib never killed anybody. Keep it up, bud

  • wow tons of haters........sounded great to me....way to explore G. many of the top bass players in the world will tell you it;s noting without having fun and exploring....needs a little polish,,,but for you to be polishing your take on rainey...enough said right there... everyone else..lets support huh????geez

i bet that guys gig in vegas was for the circus circus band..im here now playing for cirque and i dont know one bass player in town would thrash you like that.

  • Yeah, thanks. Not to mention this vid is over a year and a half old now!

  • Fantastic job, very smooth and I thought you matched the tone well.

  • I tend to prefer constructive criticism, but thanks anyways.

  • Spend time carefully listening (the song and yourself). People hear things not there & ingrain bad habits rather than good styling. Learn the guitar chords in the song (makes you a master bassist vs just an amateur). Research bass tabs & don't try to over play a bass line until you've mastered the root. Above all, don't just learn, master the fundamentals until they're habit. ... 'nuff?

  • Ok, but you're not telling me anything I don't already know or do. I'm basically playing Chuck Rainey's original bassline here. Is there something that doesn't sound right to you?

  • Everything after the first 4 notes.

Good luck with that bass thing anyway, I gotta make a Vegas gig - later Kid Charlemagne.

  • Tight. This is a kick ass song. Now my bass player won't have an excuse, I can tell him to check YouTube. I've dug Steely Dan's sound. That 1- and 2- snare hit lag just enough.

  • Smooth! I love it, good job!

  • very tasteful playing and song choice !! &loop=1

  • cool!!!

  • you no how to play man

  • Nice playing and feel. Good that you don't overplay. At around 1 minute you make a mistake moving from the F#7#9 to the B7b13 by stepping up a half step but it still feels really good. You can tell you've been studying the bass player though. Overall it sounds great and you know all the giveaway fills that make that song. Keep up the great work.

    Daz

  • Ahh... whats a few roots and extensions between friends! :) Great job GBagley.

  • You know, you kicked ass on that one! 5 Stars.

  • Keep it alive and smooth man!!!

  • tres bien jouer, avec un son parfait NICE !!!

  • Merci!

  • nice...

  • Nicely done.

  • I had to watch this again! This is just so cool! :P

  • Very nice!

  • Sweet bass. Nice playin'.

  • hey man, nice work...i know it's not what was played originally, but it sounded good with the recording. I've played this song many time too, but good work.

  • Not trying to sound like Rainey is fine, but if you're going to embellish, don't embellish a playalong. Good playing otherwise

  • Why not? Works good enough for me :)

  • Hey Greg, it's Dan M from International/Anne Rogers.

Great job! Colin just told me today that you had some stuff up on YouTube, so I decided to check it out. These recordings are very impressive, my friend.

But for the rest of you, you need to hear him live. I've played a lot of jazz, and some other alternative stuff with Greg, and every time I get the honor of playing with him, my respect for his talent goes up tremendously.

Thanks for jamming last Wednesday. You sounded excellent!

  • Hey Dan, thanks. It's always fun playing with you (and Colin)!

  • YOUR TOTALLY COOL! Your a really good bass-player..

    COOL!

  • Greg, two things stop replying to the folk who keep talking about your interpretation (which is awesome)of Josie. Second, if they want the link to the sound you are obtaining, here is the link for the card (which I have purchased and am anxiously awaiting)

    zzounds DOT com/item--THKMIMD662

  • man, I should proof before hittig the post button..

I meant the folk who are posting negative comments.

Also, if they want to know how you are getting such good tone, then here is the link to the sound card you plug your bass directly into. Hope that reads better.

  • Thanks for the link, that's the one. It sounds awesome for recording! You'll love it, I'm sure. I like reading and replying to all the comments, positive or negative. They explain their views, I explain mine. Doesn't bother me at all, I like a good discussion.

  • The first 4 bass lines you play the same but they are different on the album. Listen again. When the vocal comes in, your line gets cramped up and misses the beaty of the lick. Watch the chromatic lead-out of the chorus because your starting and ending on the wrong note.

  • I know those parts are different on the album, I'm not trying to do the same thing. It's your opinion and that's fine, but I think what I did works fine and sounds good.

  • your ear is flawed. listen again

  • How so? You know I'm not trying to play EXACTLY what Rainey did, right? Sounds like it works fine to me. Care to enlighten us?

  • Hi G,

Good thing too, cause Bagley's already got that job! Keep doing what you're doing with great feel, tone, and time, and soon enough, folks will want to play like you instead. Musicians aren't all here to be a bunch of copycats of each other; the creativity is still key, and you've got that.

    Best,

    Shutixa

  • Good man. Started to get a little sloppy. You need more STINK too.

  • Great tone on the bass, no headstock shots on video so what is the bass? You have a great feeling for the song. Awsome job.

  • An "A" for accuracy, but try to get a little more groove & feel into it... play it with a little more purpose. Outside of that, it's great to hear an ostensibly young kid playing along to one of the truly innovative bass lines in pop music history. Very nicely dialed in there, buddy. Good attention to technical detail.

  • Thanks. Check out my other Steely Dan vid too - "West of Hollywood". It's more recent, and I feel my playing is better on that one.

  • Very nice job bro!

  • Thanks ...I like the sic stops and octives exspecialualy on a 5 string .You have an extremly good amp/speaker I can hear besides by the look of style you have been playing a long time .Sorry if I missed something .

  • Thanks, but I'm not using an amp or speaker. That's just the natural tone of my bass plugged straight into a recording soundcard :)

  • Could you tell me what a sound card is & its meaning please thanks.

  • A soundcard goes in your computer, for recording and playing back sound. All computers have them, but the stock ones usually aren't great. You can get all kinds of better ones for recording. The one I have is an M-Audio Delta 66

  • Could you please GBagley play .The hamburgertrain by Primus thank you so much jetrado .

  • That is so good, that makes a change from all the ego tripping lead guitarist.Where would we be if we had no bass!!

  • listen more closely my friend... my fellow musician...and learn the meaning of the song

  • I'm impressed! Totally great! But I think it's really rare to see a 5-strings bass.. In my country we mostly play on a 4-strings.. AND ACTUALLY! Chuck Rainey who plays bass on "Josie", has a 6-strings bass.. Just so you know! And the 23.juli i'm seeing Steely dan in Denmark, my country.. GREAT GREAT!

  • Nice Playing!

I know you were going for your own thing and I thought it came out nicely. (It's still weird to hear such an accurate version with the slapping on the bridge.)

    Keep it up!

  • I like the tone your bass has.

  • superb playing mate

  • absoluting amazing man. I have been playing for a little over two years. Just teaching myself. This is how I want to learn how to play

  • what kind of amp? your sound is amazing

  • Thanks. I'm not using an amp. Just going direct to my recording soundcard.

  • Awesome job!!! very smooth.

  • Wish I could play that with you, see my post of the same song.

  • Ace mate nice to see a bass player laying down a groove on you tube.

  • tight. stay with the dan

  • Awesome

    how about "Peg" next

  • Excellent job. I prefer the smoother, non-slapping/popping (more conventional?) playing you were doing. I can't remember who the bassist on that track was (Chuck Rainey? I don't think it was Becker.) but did he slap/pop? Not sure. It still sounded great!

  • killer wor kman

  • Ken Lawrence makes some super nice basses. I got to meet him at is shop a few years ago before he got in the buyers guide. Super nice guy. Had him do a bit of fret work for me. Quality built instruments. Nice job on the song bro. Makes me want to learn it. Happy New Year!

  • Excellent!

Love your tone too! Nice low end growl.

    Rock On!

  • great job ...hard to go wrong with the dan ...keep it up

  • Wicked job Bud, thanx for sharing! Kudos, D.

  • Dude!! That was tight! I have been fighting with a few sections of that song for so long... Tabliture was no help. Thanks for posting this

  • It was funny listening to you and Walter fight for solo space. Good job.

  • Great job! Good ear. I love the bass on all of Steely Dan's stuff. Difficult stuff.

  • Smooth

  • Thanks, but I'm not trying to play it exactly as it was played on the record. What's the point in that?

  • I like your phrasing, solid timing. very musical. even if it isn't exactly what is on the album - it still sounds great with the chord changes.

  • I agree with BassAgent; very close in parts, and very good try!

  • great bass playing, good ear.

  • how about you playing a bass drums line and me playalong and videoing back? videojamsession is bornD-) greets

  • I dunno how well I could get a drum line on bass to sound, but we could definitely work something out ;)

  • The bass line is not entirely correct, but you play it very, véry cool!

  • Darn good job.

  • This is a great video, you are pretty amazing and this video has helped me learn most of the song on bass. Thanks.

  • great job!...can't you play any Geddy Lee...I'd like to see that?

  • Very tasteful. This not as easy. This song has a lot of modulations and tempo changes. Is Steely a rock and roll band or a jazz band?

  • Kudos on a great job! I'd love to jam with you sometime =) drummer&guitarist send their love! GREAT song choice!

  • I'm so envious...great playing.

  • crikey, i enjoyed that. excellent work, you look like you'd be a blast to jam with.

    love from a drummer.

  • bump bump bump if it was post on tb

  • Awesome!! Five Stars!!

  • WELL DONE! ^-^

  • good...

  • Went to see Steely Dan and Michael McDonald a few weeks ago. Josie was my favorite of the night. Everyone hit it! Nice job on this play along. You play very well.

  • Beautiful!
