Hmm. All the hate for Nixon seems to be coming from 2 camps:
1) The nutjobs who support Texas Rep. RuPaul and want America to be a RuPaul dictatorship. We'll go back to the gold standard the day after we go back to traveling via horse and buggy. Get over it, dunderheads.
2) Democrats who whine about Nixon visiting China, yet overlook that scumbag Clinton handed nuclear missile technology to China in exchange for campaign money.
Fact is, Nixon was greater than Rep. RuPaul & Clinton combined.
As a loyal Democrat I can only say this - Nixon was deeply flawed, but he was not the monster he has been portrayed as. History must cast a better light on him than has been cast.
oh cmon stope glorifying this asshole! thanks to him millions of people died. hes a genocidal murderer just like many american presidents. a great lier too
Nixon destroyed his legacy by revealing himself to be nothing more than a common criminal. It was not the recording of events that got him into trouble, it was the fact that he documented his own disregard for our Constitution and the rule of law that sealed his fate as the biggest failure in American history.
@KCShinn With all of Nixon's flaws, I find it hard to see him as a bigger failure than Bush/Cheney. It would be a real challenge to argue that Nixon damaged the country as much as they did. In many ways their incessant legal push to strengthen the presidency was a reaction to what was done to Nixon. They used their major, previously unheard-of enhancements to the power of the presidency as as cover and shield for crimes and bungling which were worse than anything Nixon ever considered.
This asshole took us of the gold standard, instituted wage and price controls, created the overbearing EPA, set the speed limit at 55 and resigned in disgrace. He was a piece of garbage and his inauguration speech was full of left-wing platitudes and meaningless tripe.
How jarring it must have been for Earl Warren, a long-time Nixon foe, to administer the new President's oath of office in 1969. That alone must have driven him to retirement.
It's interesting that the conservative movement has been so successful in buying the American media & distorting facts that today Richard Nixon would not be allowed in the republican party. His foreign policy was violent enough for them but his domestic policy wasn't cruel enough to the American middle class to satisfy the Wall St.-republican bloodlust. He was used as a scapegoat by all Washington insiders - democrat & republican - so they could blame him & continue corrupt business as usual.
I'm glad to come onto this video and see such positive comments towards Nixon. I recognize his achievements and they are so so overlooked. Everyone remembers him for one thing and that is Watergate. Yes he should of never got into that mess that cost him so dearly but I feel that this man was a great president. If you ever google 'the worst American presidents', Nixon is placed usually at the top or 2nd to Bush. I am saddened to see that but I will remember him in my own way. Nixon is my hero.
@batman93oo In what ways was he smart? He ended a war that everybody wanted to end. Some people say that he's smart enough to improve the relationship with Russians and Chinese.
Look at what happens today. North Korea still exists. China is a lot richer. We now owe China trillions of dollars. China is a good buddy with Pakistan who has not intentions of helping the US but still shamelessly asks for billions from us.
How smart was Nixon? He was dancing with disgusting Chinese communists
@ttiiyy Him and kissinger with detente eased cold war tensions, set forth policies over the issue of the environment, Kep't tax rates on the wealthiest higher to keep us a fault. If you want to blame anybody blame Reagan for being the president putting us into debt, using the savings of social security, and believing in voodoo economics. We are in debt and have the largest gap between the richest and poorest in our country not because of borrowing from China, but because Reagan chose this.
@martiniostramoga i wasn't alive when nixon was president, but he got america out of vietnam and he had a good foriegn policy, the biggest concern for me is foriegn policy today, some say the economy but its not that bad for me and i'm a middle class kid from washington, obama is always getting involved with trying to help the middle east but he needs to focus on the problems at home
...HE WAS A FUCKING DISGRACE...AND YOU PEOPLE KNOW IT...WATERGATE JACKASSES...HE WAS SCUM...A RACIST...AND THE FIRST DUMB ASS TO BE THROWN THE FUCK OUT OF OFFICE.....and what is he talking about in his speech..just psycho talking...
Reagan did away with free TUITION in state universities, raided the social security fund, killed FAIR&BALANCED NEWS by ending the FAIRNESS DOCTRINE,allowed corporations to monopolize by not enforcing the SHERMAN ANTI-TRUST ACT, espoused DEREGULATION,stopped PENALIZING employers that hired the undocumented in order to break the backs of unions&the MIDDLE CLASS.Touted the MAGIC HAND OF THE FREE MARKET(code words4BILLIONAIRES),YES HAPPY BIRTHDAY RONNIE YOU REPUBLICAN CLOWN GOD
Curse you, Richard M. Nixon. You had the power right then and there to end the war in Vietnam. LBJ had nearly sealed the deal...but no, you decided that you would not be the first president to "loose" a war. Your 1973 "Peace with Honor" was a cynical scam to postpone defeat to the next pres. You prolonged the war an agonizing 4 more years: 25K more US soldiers dead. Millions dead in SE Asia from carpet bombing and Agent Orange.
7:35--"we shall plan now for the day when our wealth can be transferred from the destruction of war abroad to the urgent needs of our people at home." We're still waiting :(
The 37th President Richard M Nixon Iegacy is the most saddest to me for a man who had a great presidency with great foreign and domestic polices all tainted by the watergate scandal really bring tears to my eyes as an american and i am 16 years old.
This is too much of a speech; if you what I mean. Way too "chewy". But, the best part, in that context, comes early at about the 3:26 mark: "I know america's youth. I believe in them." Right, Dick, right. And they so obviously believed in you. The "silent majority" was a great statement; this is mere boilerplate.
tricky dicky vs bobby kennedy would have been an epic contest! would bobby have been swept to office on a tidal wave of idealism and optimism or would his candidacy have split the democrats and seen an even bigger vote george wallace? we sadly of course will never know!
i also wonder what nixon would make of the tea baggers and rep candidates like christine o'donnel and paladino?
It's interesting how democrats have critizised President Nixon for watergate over the years when every modern president democrat or republican has recorded conversations or spied on other people. Lets not forget that he ended the Vietnam War for the United States just like he said he would do, for a while he eased Cold War tensions by improving relations with the Soviet Union and China the first president to ever do so. He does not get the credit he deserves, he was a great president.
@Chad3150 within the foreign arena, he was the best president we've ever had. at the very least he should be in the top ten or top fifteen list of best presidents.
@jerzy862 I agree with you,on that. I'm not a republican, but I honestly believe that if Nixon would have served his full 2nd term he would have ended the cold war and not Reagan.
@Chad3150 foreign policy wise he was very effective i agree. However that still doesnt excuse his actions regarding Watergate and the general level of corruption of his administration, nor does the fact that other administrations have done similar things
A) Democrats are indeed morons. President Obama says that it's wrong to waterboard suspected terrorists. And yet it's Okay to kill them when it's necessary. LOL
B) I don't know what credits Nixon "deserves" for improving the relationship with China. The Chinese Army killed American soldiers during both the Vietnamese War and the Korean War. North Korea still exists thanks to Communist CHINKS. Even worse, the US now owes China trillions. Thanks a lot, Nixon!
@Chad3150 Nixon did more than wire tapped citizens, he outright attacked his critics. He deported citizens, audited their taxes, slander them as communists agents, and would implicate US generals for his own executive deicisions to drasticaly expand bombings into North Vietnam and Cambodia.
How different do you think he would have been as President if elected in 1960, when the Chicago mob and LBJs Texans stole the result. Think about it. History will be kinder to Nixon than the left-wing trash in the US media.
@Reichenback09 I have thought the same way. History now says one thing but in 100 years, who knows. He was way ahead of his time in foreign policy. And this speech is one that could be listened to today. What Pres. Nixon said here is more relevant today than ever. "The American dream do'es not come to those who sleep"
Nixon was elected in '68 with the promise to "end the war in Vietnam" but instead he extended, expanded and prolonged it for the sake of his supporters in the military-industrialist complex that Ike warned us about. The war in Vietnam ONLY ended in 1975 with the fall of Saigon, SEVEN LONG YEARS after Nixon's promise and after Nixon resigned in disgrace. Some say that Watergate was his worst crime, but I feel that the secrets behind the Pentagon papers & the persecution of Ellsberg were worse.
@cbasallie The fact is that the war in Vietnam NEVER ended during his term. He resigned in disgrace in 1974 and the war ended in 1975. He lied to get elected and immediately in '69 he expanded the war which betrayed his promise. I was there in 1970 which was some of the heaviest fighting. We bombed Hanoi and mined Haiphong. Nixon was a liar to America and he lied to the S. Vietnamese. It was HIS policies that resulted in the US defeat. The pilots despised him and Kissinger.
@exenrontexas I see where you are coming from. I wasn't there. My opinion is just a general opinion about American presence overseas. I actually think we never should have been there in the first place.
I also believe in free trade.
I'm all for self defense and closed borders and I appreciate and want a strong army.
I just think our men should be home, as in Lexington and the Revolutionary War.
Imagine if our troops had been in Vietnam back then.
@cbasallie In his sort of death bed confession, Robert McNamara, JFKs and LBJs Sec. of Defense, testified that JFK ordered him to plan to REMOVE our troops from Vietnam after the '64 election which he never saw. Some believe this is why he was assassinated. The same people that bankrolled LBJ also bankrolled Nixon and one of the major ones was Brown and Root, an oil field services company aka Halliburton.
@exenrontexas Haliburton is still around. These people who bankrolled them are still around. Why did CBS/FBI go after Nixon and allow these wicked bankrollers to remain?
If JFK is supposed to have noticed that ''somethnig was up'' then isn't it possible that Nixon also noticed ''something was up''.
His resignation was a white flag to the forces which were and still are.
The forces that be today...shadow gov't...are stronger than ever and forced his resignation.
@cbasallie Many questions, let me attempt at some answers but please be aware that these are speculations. It is hard to know the true answers unless you can get inside someone's head and since they are all dead, that is impossible.
I am certain that both JFK and Nixon were well aware of the evil forces that have power in our nation and the world. JFK tried to do something about it while Nixon embraced it. Nixon ONLY resigned because the Republicans in the Senate like Goldwater told him to.
@cbasallie Nixon was part of the neo-fascist aka neocon movement and some of his regime was part of the BUSH neocon regime. The NEOCON guru was Leo Strauss who came to America on a Rockefeller grant arranged by Carl Schmitt. Carl Schmitt was the lawyer for Fritz Thyssen and Prescott BUSH, W's grandfather and Schmitt was also the personal lawyer for Adolf Hitler. The Neocons are fascists without the anti-semitism. It is the NEOCONS who control the GOP today and mean to pull down America.
@cbasallie I said the NEOCONS were neo-fascists not neo-nazis and you are partially correct in that they are pro-Israel and pro-war but also pro-business which fits very nicely into my definition of the military-industrialist complex. ALL of them had connections of Nixon who hated Jews but loved the MIC. Nixon was not destroyed by the media unless you are saying that they told the truth about him & highlighted his evils which were many. Truly the media today has no favorites except Fox & BUSH.
@cbasallie Now this part is speculation. Truly the Jews were surprised by the Nazis. Over and over in their writings they were in denial about what the Nazis intended even though Hitler laid it out clearly in Mein Kampf. They were surprised that the fascist movement could gather so much popular support by lying and terrorism. The NEOCONS are using the same tactics with the exception of anti-semitism.
A good video to watch on the subject is the "Power of Nightmares.
@exenrontexas Nixon was certainly Not a NEOCON and expressed concern the the republican party was heading in an altogether ultra-conservative direction that did not take into consideration the needs of their constituents. Although Nixon as he entered politics benefited from the patronage of Bush's family and connections, when he became president of the United States he took a hard left turn for Moderation, this betrayal slotted him for removal from office, this time, with threat of impeachment.
@youngoldbones Interesting spin on the facts. I see no turn to the left whatsoever in Nixons career and absolutely no concern for the needs of his constituent except for this. He was elected with strong support of the military industrialist complex which had/has strong fascist connections and he most ASSUREDLY was concerned for their "welfare". The parallels between Nixon and the NEOCON guru Leo Strauss are alarming and profound. Watch the "power of nightmares" for those parallels.
@exenrontexas If you are going to ignore all the facts to the contrary then of course you will see no evidence to support my statements. I will refer you to comments made on the Stephanie Miller show, pre-election 2008 where Stephanie Miller, a raging anti-NEOCON exclaims that Richard Nixon had one of the most liberal leaning administrations much more so than any since! He actually accomplished school integration where other presidents merely paid it lip service. He created the EPA . . . cont.
@youngoldbones Part of the NEOCON mantra is to spend the US taxpayers dollars on ANY program that keeps them in power as long as it isn't their money. Nixon fit that perfectly. Did Nixon EVER promote race relations, build the schools, promote peace? What he did was war mongering and tearing down the institutions that made America great and he undermined the America worker by opening the door to cheap Chinese slave labor. Without that Communism in China would have fallen with Russia.
@exenrontexas All the statements you have made here have no basis in fact. Nixon had a unique position with the southern democrats and he used it. They expected him to be on their side, when he showed them that their continued fight against integration would not be supported by his administration, they grudgingly allowed themselves to be dragged into the 20th century. By NIXON! You claim he tore down institutions, but do not specify his targets, you are weaving a word salad devoid of facts.
@exenrontexas You are wrong exenrontexas, As both Russia and China were failing, Americans poured their investments into them both. China was simply the cheaper of the two.
@exenrontexas Why do you not speak of India, which is another of our cheap labor repositories? Nixon had taken Pakistan's side in their dispute. Are you not now going to at least acknowledge that Nixon tried to stop the rise of yet another cheap labor marketplace by supporting their enemy? No of course not. Because you are an ideologue, with a particular bent to attack an already much maligned dead man, who sought to leave his country stronger than he found it.
@cbasallie Excellent point. Nixon was removed from office, as he was off the Republican "leash" then the Republican party hit the gas and lurched full speed into their NEOCON agenda.
@youngoldbones Nixon was ONLY off the lease when he betrayed the South Vietnamese and allowed the fall of their regime in 1975. This was a domino that the MIC used to keep the military on high alert and the resultant hundreds of billions spent on it. Since Nixon was responsible for that fall and the subsequent reduction of MIC spending and the animosity he caused by breaking his promise in 1968 to end the war and the secrecy of the Pentagon Papers and Watergate. He had MORE than three strikes.
@cbasallie There is strong evidence and even proofs that JFK was going to remove our troops from Vietnam. The warmongers in the banks and large military industrialist complex would not stand for it. There is also evidence that he planned to disband the CIA which would have caused this nation to avoid enormous suffering and expense like Vietnam, Chile, Iraq, Iran, Panama, El Salvador and the rest. Probably would have ended the drug trade as well. JFK also planned to end the Federal Reserve.
@exenrontexas The proof that Nixon was concerned about the CIA comes from his own mouth. The very tapes that everyone uses to criticize him. Nixon was worried about the CIA.
And we know that media and gov't spies set him up.
We watched and applauded as they did it.
We have first hand accounts....for heaven sakes we witnessed the media and gov't spies go after Nixon.
@cbasallie Nixon was despised by Eisenhower who may have been the last good Republican president. Ike warned us of him and the military industrialist complex. It was the industrialists in Germany who put Hitler in power and even Mussolini said that fascism is more properly called corporatism. Nixon supported the fascist demagoguery of McCarthy and Ike despised that as well. The people who pulled down Nixon were the last vestiges of honest government like John Sirica and Barry Goldwater.
@exenrontexas Correction, Nixon was the last truly great Republican President. If Ike did not like Nixon it was on a personal level. Nixon was a political dynamo, and I doubt Ike could even keep up with his interests being as he was at his core, a military man. Ike certainly did not include Nixon in his warning of the American people regarding the Military Industrial Complex. You have a "cafeteria style' approach to history, misquoting facts and events and tying them together as you see fit.
@youngoldbones Nixon was the worst president in history until Reagan and then BUSH. The ONLY reason that Ike did not denounce Nixon publically was that his son married Nixon's daughter. Ike denounced Sen. McCarthy who was Nixons idol and mentor. Nixon saw through Nixons personal corruption during the "checkers" speech and lamented the forces behind Nixon that would change the party of Lincoln, Roosevelt & Smedley Butler into the party of Nixon, Reagan and BUSH.
@exenrontexas You do not have a very measured approach to your assessment of Richard Nixon, because of you are blinkered, your opinion and mine will never find common ground. Right there in your 2nd missive you admit that he bucked the MIC and allowed the pieces to fall into place which would eventually end the war. Nixon had enough of the control of the elite and the MIC and finally took a stand for all of us, and you describe it as a betrayal of a foreign power! You're an incredible hypocrite.
@youngoldbones WRONG! The MIC and Nixon were on the same page ALWAYS. While they were disappointed in Nixon for ending the war they were grateful to him for extending it SEVEN LONG YEARS after he promised to end it. How many hundreds of billions of dollars and tens of thousands of American lives were lost during that time? There is/was an unholy alliance between Nixon, the MIC, the NEOCONS and BUSH and it all revolves around the continual war policies that drain the US Treasury.
@exenrontexas Incorrect, people who are on the same page do not disappoint one another, they end the book in unison. You use silly little analogies to prop up your statements, what exactly did you mean by three strikes? that was a fragmentary half formed thought that had nothing behind it. Look once you are in a war, as we were, Nixon had to give an effort to winning it. Don't forget also that Kissinger was there advising and manipulating, the NWO poster boy and Rockerfeller agent.
@exenrontexas . . . The DEA and declared a National Earth Day, and created a national health care program far superior to the one bandied about today. Only to have it defeated by a democrat, Teddy Kennedy who thought it didn't go far enough! Before Teddy Kennedy passed away, he spoke of his actions against Nixon's health care program as one of his biggest mistakes. The NEOCON's were probably very grateful for his (Teddy's) help in this matter, and then they moved against Nixon, taking him out.
@youngoldbones Do you remember TANK MAN? The ordinary Chinese man in Beijing who faced down a Red Army tank? Without the door opened by Nixon, this event might have spead across China and ended communism there forever. Without the NEOCON toadie in the WH, Bush Sr., they might have succeeded. The NEOCON fascists NEED continual war and need enemies real or imagined to promote fear in the American people. They also need cheap labor to feed the war machine. We live in a NEOCON paradise.
@exenrontexas What in the HELL does that have to do with Nixon opening the door to CHINA?! Had the door never opened that man, you call TANK MAN, would never have felt the nerve to stare down a tank at all as he would never feel that he could blackmail his countries leaders with his very public (worldwide coverage) death!! Without the open door, this event would not have been broadcast to the world, making the Chinese leaders momentarily blink!!! ROFL! Thanks for the ammo! You proved my point!
@exenrontexas Look I don't like the NEOCONS either, my problem with you is your inexplicable and erroneous inclusion of NIXON into that fraternity. He was clearly not their friend, It was Bush Sr. who came the White house to tell him that it was over. Nixon's downfall may have had something to do with the fact that he knew what they were up to, and rebelled against them when they thought he would play along. They were wrong. No wonder he hated the elites, they were trying to tell him what to do.
@exenrontexas Senator McCarthy was nothing of the sort to Nixon. LOL! You are clearly making a statement you cannot support. Nixon made his reputation in the Hiss case, also where he picked up all the liberal democratic and media animus. McCarthy clearly hoped to gain similar national prominence by ferreting out communists, even Nixon left McCarthy to his own device, particularly when he saw how unbalanced McCarthy was becoming. Attacking even Eisenhower, Where ever do you get your information?
@cbasallie And I think the end of the draft was also a mistake. America was founded on the principle of the citizen soldier. It was the well regulated militias at Lexington that won the Revolutionary war & defeated the mercenaries. Today, under Cheney, we have a mercenary army. There is great wisdom in sending men from ALL parts of society to fight for America. The rich, the poor, the educated and less so ALL have an obligation to serve America. Now we only have the poor, uneducated that serve.
Hearing this speech made me cry. We don't elect our leaders any more. The media uses propoganda to tell us who to follow. Americans have lost so much to the shadow government who control the media and the banks. They took down our elected President. He was a great man. Now, decades later, it's our turn. We've lost so much. These are dark times.
The only good thing I can think of that Nixon did: He showed the whole world that the American Presidency is as corrupt as most other American spheres of life. Before Nixon, people didn't even question anything the President said. Now everything the President says is put under a fine-tooth comb. THAT is the only thing positive I can think of that Nixon did. All presidents before him were crooks too. Nixon was just the first one to "get caught".
@lancetop Television showed the world. Watergate was a reflection of the changing times.
The media had begun to flex its muscles prior to Watergate but Nixon's resignation was the first white flag offered by the white house to the new leaders of our nation...which is the zionist controlled media.
@cbasallie actuallu I'm pretty convinced it's the CIA that controls the mainstream media in this country. I think the AP is controlled by the CIA as well. Zionism isn't as strong as you think it is.
There are so many things I would like to say about this clip, but so little space. There is one thing that strikes me though. When you watch this, and other presidential inauguration speeches, it is quite evident that these presidents all talked about the greatness and accomplishments of America, and the accomplishments yet to unfold. Not once do they blame America or apologize for this country for anything. They talk about taking the lead. Makes you wonder about the current Pres. Hmm.
@bingaling5 You haven't listened to the secret WH recordings, have you. Nixon was a low life bug crawler. Even Eisenhower despised him and warned Kennedy to watch him. You might want to search youtube for Madeleine Browns testimony about a meeting in Dallas in Nov, '63 with LBJ, J. Edgar Hoover, Nixon and the richest man in the world, a Texas oil Baron. She was LBJs mistress.
@cbasallie LBJ set up the recording system himself and Nixon expanded it. The other people in the room were not aware of the recordings and therefore it was secret to them. There was a mysteriously missing segment of tape in a critical part of the recordings about Watergate than probably would have got Nixon in prison for treason. As it was he was a traitor to his oath of office and the American people. He was the lowest ever president until BUSH.
@exenrontexas Nixon secretly recorded his own conversations? So they were his own tapes. Like if I had a surveillance system in my home? That's legal.
@cbasallie Of course, the were NEVER his own personal tapes. They belong to the PEOPLE of the United States like everything else in the White House. Most of them are in the public domain and you CAN order copies or transcripts except for a few that MAY deal with national security and are still secret. You can probably listen to them right here on youtube or google them. They are a real revelation into the heart of darkness known as Nixon. He was corrupt and evil.
@exenrontexas OK I get it. So they weren't secret. So the President was speaking and knew he was being recorded and knew that everything he was saying was for the public record.
So why would he say anthing that was self incriminating?
Wasn't he just giving the thumbs up to the FBI to spy on the opponents who were spying on him???
@cbasallie Here is one of the racist Nixon WH tapes. He runs down Jews and blacks. What a bunch of demons were running the country during Nixon. Right out of hell.
@cbasallie Here is another revealing testimony from LBJs mistress, Madeleine Brown, who was in a Dallas hotel with Johnson on November 21, 1963 when he met with Clint Murchison, other oil company executives, J. Edgar Hoover and Richard Nixon. When Johnson left the meeting he told her, "After tomorrow those Kennedy's will not embarrass me again. That's a promise not a threat".
@exenrontexas I'm opposed to war. I'm narrow minded in that I only see the big picture. To me, Nixon removed the land troops from Vietnam and got us friendlier with China.
I don't really see past that.
To me I find it draining to consider the possibility that Nixon didn't like or speak nicely about...whoever...
Maybe it's selfish but since none of his policies, imo, hurt anyone... I figure he functioned well as his job.
@cbasallie Nixon KEPT the troops in Vietnam long past when he promised to remove them. He ruined the economy which they blamed Carter for. His policies caused the Arab oil embargo and he plotted with the Chinese to steal America's industrialization to kill the unions. There was nothing at all good about him.
@cbasallie The overall plan that Nixon had with China was to undermine American manufacturing by using Chinese slave labor to move factories OUT of America. Nixon envied the control that the Chinese had over their society by using totalitarian methods. Nixon resented having to stand for elections and having to pander for popular support and despised the general population for being so gullible. Listen to the Nixon White House tapes and this becomes obvious. Also read "Republican Gomorrah".
@cbasallie This is yet another Nixon WH tape where he runs down Fred Thompson and then later supports him because he is going to undermine John Dean. Remember that John Dean was Nixon's WH Special Counsel who finally testified against Nixon and exposed his crimes of Watergate. Thompson was a weasel and committed treason.
We could learn much good from President Nixon in 2010. In this speech he said, "We cannot learn from one another until we stop shouting at one another, until we speak quietly enough so that our words can be heard as well as our voices". A generation of "in your face" attitudes needs that message.
@sandythebear Yes, even Bill Clinton when eulogizing him at his funeral complemented him on his contnued grasp of current affairs of state (no pun intended). I once visited the Nixon library in Yorba Linda, CA, and it was an amazing place to see. I got lucky enough that day to meet Julie Nixon Eisenhower, and got her autograph on a book she wrote about her mother. Nixon was a very good president, and a great statesman unitl thie end. At least we knew he cared about the USA, unlike Obama.
@AndehLanzer Nixon was a horrible president. he shouldve been killed too. he started the D.E.A. and the "War on Drugs" in america (one of the biggest wastes of time in history).
As a moderate democrat, I can honestly say I would take Nixon over Reagan, Bush41, Bush43, as much as I'd hate to say it, Carter, and even Obama anyday of the week.
Watergate was not only a disaster for Nixon, but for America. He speaks clearly here as a true world leader who won the biggest second term presidential margin in history, yet he would resign over what was arguably a "storm in a tea cup." I find it difficult to understand why the Americans love to build people up, but also love even more to knock them down again - in Nixon's case over a triviality. Opening up China, war on cancer, cheered by millions of Arabs in Egypt, HMOs etc. Incredible!
watergate makes nixon a disaster...i like him & i'm sad about that, BUT!
nixon tried to get a healthcare bill thru, defeated by ted kennedy & congress...SAD...we have the EPA & Dept of EDUC, Detante & other progressive ideas from nixon...read about the NEW FEDERALISM, and understand some of nixons policy...huge mistakes and lies abound in his administration...but, nixon also did/and tried to do great things...i wonder, if healthcare reform were passed in 1969, we ALL might have healthcare 2010!
@1clarinet1981 Yes, and I believe it would have been better than Obamacare. Or, we might have gone broke paying for it, who knows. Nixon even attempted to get a real welfare reform bill through Congress, but the Democrat Congress would not give this to a Republcan President. Authored partly by Daniel Patrick Moynihan, then one of his advisors. Ronald Reagan once said, "There is no limit to what a man can do, if he doesn't care who gets the credit." How true this is.
@lancetop Better check your facts. Nixon is in the upper half of Presidential rankings as rated by historians by C-Span several years ago. The only thing holding him back from moving higher is Watergate. In years to come, this will vanish as well. Oh and George W. Bush has started out in the rankings several steps up from the bottom, and is also likely to move up. The further away history gets from the man, the more accurate the rankings of his presidency.
@WMJCPA Worse than Watergate is the Pentagon papers when Daniel Ellsberg exposed the great deception and deceit of the Military Industrialist Complex in SE Asia. Even Dr. Tom Dooley, the gay Navy doctor who ran a free clinic in Laos, spoke ill of the CIA mucking around the jungle trying to set up their heroin smuggling operation. Nixon supported it as did Reagan.
The United States needs another Nixon right now. A president that is wiling to do what it takes, even when congress and people bail on him because they are too cowardly to know what needs to be done.
@skidoomxz9 Nixon did what he knew what was right, and he took risks that other people who never would ever amount to anything wouldn't do. I love Nixon for what he did. Watergate overshadows all the great things he did, such as peace treaties with China and USSR plus ending Vietnam War.
A saad for Ameria...when Tricky icky was elected...its all been down hill since his election, except for President Clinton, who was able to turned events around, balance buget, etc..
@sandythebear too bad he couldn't fix his character, and too bad he wasn't love like Jack Kennedy. But you are right, he continued Johnson's War for 5 additional years and ended after he resigned in disgrace under President Ford.
i think what shows if a president was the greatest is what the country is like the following years after they are gone, because that's when everything they've really starts to affect the country, unless they do two terms. what do you all think? does looking back on history really give us the best perspective, or is it the present.......also, history is often rewritten and isnt the exact truth of what happen. just curious!
He wasn't a Dissapointment! He was one of the greatest Presidents that our country ever had. The country was in Great shape,

Don't be Nieve, All Presidents Lie, cheat, steal, some even kill. He was the only one who got caught. Bush was a dissapontment, and Obama is a dissapointment.
Obama had dead People who died in chicago voting for him. So don't call nixon a dissapointment!
Don't be stupid. True all Presidents; lie, cheat, steal, kill etc. although no President in the history of our nation bombed two nations without anybody knowing. I mean what kind of douche bombs two nations without telling anybody.
Yeah he stopped Vietnam only 5 years later after he promised to end it. Nixon
escalated the Vietnam War by ordering the bombing of Cambodia and Laos. And as your one-world govt theory you do Nixon was considered the modern day emperor because he thought anything he did was okay because he was President.
And if you think Obama is the anti-christ you're just simply retarded.
It must have been painful for Earl Warren, a longtime Nixon enemy, to administer the oath of office.

Nixon destroyed his legacy by revealing himself to be nothing more than a common criminal. It was not the recording of events that got him into trouble, it was the fact that he documented his own disregard for our Constitution and the rule of law that sealed his fate as the biggest failure in American history.
KCShinn 7 months ago
@KCShinn With all of Nixon's flaws, I find it hard to see him as a bigger failure than Bush/Cheney. It would be a real challenge to argue that Nixon damaged the country as much as they did. In many ways their incessant legal push to strengthen the presidency was a reaction to what was done to Nixon. They used their major, previously unheard-of enhancements to the power of the presidency as as cover and shield for crimes and bungling which were worse than anything Nixon ever considered.

Some say that Watergate was his worst crime, but I feel that the secrets behind the Pentagon papers & the persecution of Ellsberg were worse.
exenrontexas 1 year ago
@exenrontexas Yes sure but he slowly removed land troops and ended the draft first, long before 1975.
Nixon didn't promise to move the troops out in a day. Did he?
He got in 1969 and 6 years later we were completely out of there but long before that the troops were being pulled out....that's what we wanted...
I looked into that already.
The time line.
The draft.
To me, Nixon looks pretty good.
cbasallie 1 year ago
@cbasallie The fact is that the war in Vietnam NEVER ended during his term. He resigned in disgrace in 1974 and the war ended in 1975. He lied to get elected and immediately in '69 he expanded the war which betrayed his promise. I was there in 1970 which was some of the heaviest fighting. We bombed Hanoi and mined Haiphong. Nixon was a liar to America and he lied to the S. Vietnamese. It was HIS policies that resulted in the US defeat. The pilots despised him and Kissinger.
exenrontexas 1 year ago
@exenrontexas I see where you are coming from. I wasn't there. My opinion is just a general opinion about American presence overseas. I actually think we never should have been there in the first place.
I also believe in free trade.
I'm all for self defense and closed borders and I appreciate and want a strong army.
I just think our men should be home, as in Lexington and the Revolutionary War.
Imagine if our troops had been in Vietnam back then.
We'd have lost.
cbasallie 1 year ago
@cbasallie In his sort of death bed confession, Robert McNamara, JFKs and LBJs Sec. of Defense, testified that JFK ordered him to plan to REMOVE our troops from Vietnam after the '64 election which he never saw. Some believe this is why he was assassinated. The same people that bankrolled LBJ also bankrolled Nixon and one of the major ones was Brown and Root, an oil field services company aka Halliburton.
exenrontexas 1 year ago
@exenrontexas Haliburton is still around. These people who bankrolled them are still around. Why did CBS/FBI go after Nixon and allow these wicked bankrollers to remain?
If JFK is supposed to have noticed that ''somethnig was up'' then isn't it possible that Nixon also noticed ''something was up''.
His resignation was a white flag to the forces which were and still are.
The forces that be today...shadow gov't...are stronger than ever and forced his resignation.
cbasallie 1 year ago
@cbasallie Many questions, let me attempt at some answers but please be aware that these are speculations. It is hard to know the true answers unless you can get inside someone's head and since they are all dead, that is impossible.
I am certain that both JFK and Nixon were well aware of the evil forces that have power in our nation and the world. JFK tried to do something about it while Nixon embraced it. Nixon ONLY resigned because the Republicans in the Senate like Goldwater told him to.
exenrontexas 1 year ago
@exenrontexas One anther thing. When a government falls we have to assume the new rising power had something to do with it.
At the end of the day we are no longer a government of the people.
We are brainwashed and controlled by the propoganda of a zionist controlled media/government.
I probably agree with you on many things but I disagree as to the time line.
Nixon fell at the hands of this new shadow government so , he could not have been a part of it.
cbasallie 1 year ago
@cbasallie Nixon was part of the neo-fascist aka neocon movement and some of his regime was part of the BUSH neocon regime. The NEOCON guru was Leo Strauss who came to America on a Rockefeller grant arranged by Carl Schmitt. Carl Schmitt was the lawyer for Fritz Thyssen and Prescott BUSH, W's grandfather and Schmitt was also the personal lawyer for Adolf Hitler. The Neocons are fascists without the anti-semitism. It is the NEOCONS who control the GOP today and mean to pull down America.
exenrontexas 1 year ago
@exenrontexas There are no Nazis in the neocon movement. The neocons are comprised of pro Israel pro war Jewish leaders and their gentile lap dogs.
None of these peole you mention have anything to do with Richard Nixon.
Anyone in office today has at the very least made peace with media but Nixon never did.
That's why they destroyed him.
cbasallie 1 year ago
@cbasallie I said the NEOCONS were neo-fascists not neo-nazis and you are partially correct in that they are pro-Israel and pro-war but also pro-business which fits very nicely into my definition of the military-industrialist complex. ALL of them had connections of Nixon who hated Jews but loved the MIC. Nixon was not destroyed by the media unless you are saying that they told the truth about him & highlighted his evils which were many. Truly the media today has no favorites except Fox & BUSH.
exenrontexas 1 year ago
@cbasallie Now this part is speculation. Truly the Jews were surprised by the Nazis. Over and over in their writings they were in denial about what the Nazis intended even though Hitler laid it out clearly in Mein Kampf. They were surprised that the fascist movement could gather so much popular support by lying and terrorism. The NEOCONS are using the same tactics with the exception of anti-semitism.
A good video to watch on the subject is the "Power of Nightmares.
/watch?v=Vt-FyuuWlWQ
exenrontexas 1 year ago
@exenrontexas Nixon was certainly Not a NEOCON and expressed concern the the republican party was heading in an altogether ultra-conservative direction that did not take into consideration the needs of their constituents. Although Nixon as he entered politics benefited from the patronage of Bush's family and connections, when he became president of the United States he took a hard left turn for Moderation, this betrayal slotted him for removal from office, this time, with threat of impeachment.
youngoldbones 1 year ago
@youngoldbones Interesting spin on the facts. I see no turn to the left whatsoever in Nixons career and absolutely no concern for the needs of his constituent except for this. He was elected with strong support of the military industrialist complex which had/has strong fascist connections and he most ASSUREDLY was concerned for their "welfare". The parallels between Nixon and the NEOCON guru Leo Strauss are alarming and profound. Watch the "power of nightmares" for those parallels.
exenrontexas 1 year ago
@exenrontexas If you are going to ignore all the facts to the contrary then of course you will see no evidence to support my statements. I will refer you to comments made on the Stephanie Miller show, pre-election 2008 where Stephanie Miller, a raging anti-NEOCON exclaims that Richard Nixon had one of the most liberal leaning administrations much more so than any since! He actually accomplished school integration where other presidents merely paid it lip service. He created the EPA . . . cont.
youngoldbones 1 year ago
@youngoldbones Part of the NEOCON mantra is to spend the US taxpayers dollars on ANY program that keeps them in power as long as it isn't their money. Nixon fit that perfectly. Did Nixon EVER promote race relations, build the schools, promote peace? What he did was war mongering and tearing down the institutions that made America great and he undermined the America worker by opening the door to cheap Chinese slave labor. Without that Communism in China would have fallen with Russia.
exenrontexas 1 year ago
@exenrontexas All the statements you have made here have no basis in fact. Nixon had a unique position with the southern democrats and he used it. They expected him to be on their side, when he showed them that their continued fight against integration would not be supported by his administration, they grudgingly allowed themselves to be dragged into the 20th century. By NIXON! You claim he tore down institutions, but do not specify his targets, you are weaving a word salad devoid of facts.
youngoldbones 1 year ago
@exenrontexas You are wrong exenrontexas, As both Russia and China were failing, Americans poured their investments into them both. China was simply the cheaper of the two.
youngoldbones 1 year ago
@exenrontexas Why do you not speak of India, which is another of our cheap labor repositories? Nixon had taken Pakistan's side in their dispute. Are you not now going to at least acknowledge that Nixon tried to stop the rise of yet another cheap labor marketplace by supporting their enemy? No of course not. Because you are an ideologue, with a particular bent to attack an already much maligned dead man, who sought to leave his country stronger than he found it.
youngoldbones 1 year ago
@cbasallie Excellent point. Nixon was removed from office, as he was off the Republican "leash" then the Republican party hit the gas and lurched full speed into their NEOCON agenda.
youngoldbones 1 year ago
@youngoldbones Nixon was ONLY off the lease when he betrayed the South Vietnamese and allowed the fall of their regime in 1975. This was a domino that the MIC used to keep the military on high alert and the resultant hundreds of billions spent on it. Since Nixon was responsible for that fall and the subsequent reduction of MIC spending and the animosity he caused by breaking his promise in 1968 to end the war and the secrecy of the Pentagon Papers and Watergate. He had MORE than three strikes.
exenrontexas 1 year ago
@cbasallie There is strong evidence and even proofs that JFK was going to remove our troops from Vietnam. The warmongers in the banks and large military industrialist complex would not stand for it. There is also evidence that he planned to disband the CIA which would have caused this nation to avoid enormous suffering and expense like Vietnam, Chile, Iraq, Iran, Panama, El Salvador and the rest. Probably would have ended the drug trade as well. JFK also planned to end the Federal Reserve.
exenrontexas 1 year ago
@exenrontexas The proof that Nixon was concerned about the CIA comes from his own mouth. The very tapes that everyone uses to criticize him. Nixon was worried about the CIA.
And we know that media and gov't spies set him up.

cbasallie 1 year ago
@cbasallie Nixon was despised by Eisenhower who may have been the last good Republican president. Ike warned us of him and the military industrialist complex. It was the industrialists in Germany who put Hitler in power and even Mussolini said that fascism is more properly called corporatism. Nixon supported the fascist demagoguery of McCarthy and Ike despised that as well. The people who pulled down Nixon were the last vestiges of honest government like John Sirica and Barry Goldwater.
exenrontexas 1 year ago
@exenrontexas Correction, Nixon was the last truly great Republican President. If Ike did not like Nixon it was on a personal level. Nixon was a political dynamo, and I doubt Ike could even keep up with his interests being as he was at his core, a military man. Ike certainly did not include Nixon in his warning of the American people regarding the Military Industrial Complex. You have a "cafeteria style' approach to history, misquoting facts and events and tying them together as you see fit.
youngoldbones 1 year ago
@youngoldbones Nixon was the worst president in history until Reagan and then BUSH. The ONLY reason that Ike did not denounce Nixon publically was that his son married Nixon's daughter. Ike denounced Sen. McCarthy who was Nixons idol and mentor. Nixon saw through Nixons personal corruption during the "checkers" speech and lamented the forces behind Nixon that would change the party of Lincoln, Roosevelt & Smedley Butler into the party of Nixon, Reagan and BUSH.
exenrontexas 1 year ago
@exenrontexas You do not have a very measured approach to your assessment of Richard Nixon, because of you are blinkered, your opinion and mine will never find common ground. Right there in your 2nd missive you admit that he bucked the MIC and allowed the pieces to fall into place which would eventually end the war. Nixon had enough of the control of the elite and the MIC and finally took a stand for all of us, and you describe it as a betrayal of a foreign power! You're an incredible hypocrite.
youngoldbones 1 year ago
@youngoldbones WRONG! The MIC and Nixon were on the same page ALWAYS. While they were disappointed in Nixon for ending the war they were grateful to him for extending it SEVEN LONG YEARS after he promised to end it. How many hundreds of billions of dollars and tens of thousands of American lives were lost during that time? There is/was an unholy alliance between Nixon, the MIC, the NEOCONS and BUSH and it all revolves around the continual war policies that drain the US Treasury.
exenrontexas 1 year ago
@exenrontexas Incorrect, people who are on the same page do not disappoint one another, they end the book in unison. You use silly little analogies to prop up your statements, what exactly did you mean by three strikes? that was a fragmentary half formed thought that had nothing behind it. Look once you are in a war, as we were, Nixon had to give an effort to winning it. Don't forget also that Kissinger was there advising and manipulating, the NWO poster boy and Rockerfeller agent.
youngoldbones 1 year ago
@youngoldbones You put my thoughts int words there when you say '' People who are on the same page end the book in unison''.
I may not know the minute details of what occured but I could clearly see which of the political figures were allied and which were not.

We live in a NEOCON paradise.
exenrontexas 1 year ago
@exenrontexas What in the HELL does that have to do with Nixon opening the door to CHINA?! Had the door never opened that man, you call TANK MAN, would never have felt the nerve to stare down a tank at all as he would never feel that he could blackmail his countries leaders with his very public (worldwide coverage) death!! Without the open door, this event would not have been broadcast to the world, making the Chinese leaders momentarily blink!!! ROFL! Thanks for the ammo! You proved my point!
youngoldbones 1 year ago
@exenrontexas Look I don't like the NEOCONS either, my problem with you is your inexplicable and erroneous inclusion of NIXON into that fraternity. He was clearly not their friend, It was Bush Sr. who came the White house to tell him that it was over. Nixon's downfall may have had something to do with the fact that he knew what they were up to, and rebelled against them when they thought he would play along. They were wrong. No wonder he hated the elites, they were trying to tell him what to do.
youngoldbones 1 year ago
@exenrontexas Senator McCarthy was nothing of the sort to Nixon. LOL! You are clearly making a statement you cannot support. Nixon made his reputation in the Hiss case, also where he picked up all the liberal democratic and media animus. McCarthy clearly hoped to gain similar national prominence by ferreting out communists, even Nixon left McCarthy to his own device, particularly when he saw how unbalanced McCarthy was becoming. Attacking even Eisenhower, Where ever do you get your information?
youngoldbones 1 year ago
@cbasallie And I think the end of the draft was also a mistake. America was founded on the principle of the citizen soldier. It was the well regulated militias at Lexington that won the Revolutionary war & defeated the mercenaries. Today, under Cheney, we have a mercenary army. There is great wisdom in sending men from ALL parts of society to fight for America. The rich, the poor, the educated and less so ALL have an obligation to serve America. Now we only have the poor, uneducated that serve.

The media had begun to flex its muscles prior to Watergate but Nixon's resignation was the first white flag offered by the white house to the new leaders of our nation...which is the zionist controlled media.
.
cbasallie 1 year ago

Hmm.

Richard Nixon was the GREATEST President EVER! We DO need him NOW more than ever!
bingaling5 1 year ago
@bingaling5 You haven't listened to the secret WH recordings, have you. Nixon was a low life bug crawler. Even Eisenhower despised him and warned Kennedy to watch him. You might want to search youtube for Madeleine Browns testimony about a meeting in Dallas in Nov, '63 with LBJ, J. Edgar Hoover, Nixon and the richest man in the world, a Texas oil Baron. She was LBJs mistress.
exenrontexas 1 year ago
@exenrontexas What do you mean secret recordings??? You mean he was being bugged???
Oh my God!
How uneasy that makes me feel.
Do you think in today's current political climate that even the average citizen is secretly being taped...oh wow..
.I hope not.
cbasallie 1 year ago
@cbasallie LBJ set up the recording system himself and Nixon expanded it. The other people in the room were not aware of the recordings and therefore it was secret to them. There was a mysteriously missing segment of tape in a critical part of the recordings about Watergate than probably would have got Nixon in prison for treason. As it was he was a traitor to his oath of office and the American people. He was the lowest ever president until BUSH.
exenrontexas 1 year ago
@exenrontexas Nixon secretly recorded his own conversations? So they were his own tapes. Like if I had a surveillance system in my home? That's legal.
How did CBS get his own personal tapes?
cbasallie 1 year ago
@cbasallie Of course, the were NEVER his own personal tapes. They belong to the PEOPLE of the United States like everything else in the White House. Most of them are in the public domain and you CAN order copies or transcripts except for a few that MAY deal with national security and are still secret. You can probably listen to them right here on youtube or google them. They are a real revelation into the heart of darkness known as Nixon. He was corrupt and evil.
exenrontexas 1 year ago
@exenrontexas OK I get it. So they weren't secret. So the President was speaking and knew he was being recorded and knew that everything he was saying was for the public record.
So why would he say anthing that was self incriminating?
Wasn't he just giving the thumbs up to the FBI to spy on the opponents who were spying on him???
cbasallie 1 year ago

I figure he functioned well as his job.
cbasallie 1 year ago
@cbasallie Nixon KEPT the troops in Vietnam long past when he promised to remove them. He ruined the economy which they blamed Carter for. His policies caused the Arab oil embargo and he plotted with the Chinese to steal America's industrialization to kill the unions. There was nothing at all good about him.
exenrontexas 1 year ago
@exenrontexas I know nothing of this plot with the Chinese. Are you referring to a free trade agreement of sorts? Is there anything I can google?
cbasallie 1 year ago
@cbasallie The overall plan that Nixon had with China was to undermine American manufacturing by using Chinese slave labor to move factories OUT of America. Nixon envied the control that the Chinese had over their society by using totalitarian methods. Nixon resented having to stand for elections and having to pander for popular support and despised the general population for being so gullible. Listen to the Nixon White House tapes and this becomes obvious. Also read "Republican Gomorrah".
exenrontexas 1 year ago
@exenrontexas No. No way. I never heard of such a thing. What tapes? I've been listening for two days.
I'm SERIOUSLY missing something.
I'm going to keep listening.
I'll check back in a few days from now.
In which particular tape does he mention an envy for Chinese totalitarian methods?
cbasallie 1 year ago

1clarinet1981 1 year ago 2

WMJCPA 1 year ago
@WMJCPA Worse than Watergate is the Pentagon papers when Daniel Ellsberg exposed the great deception and deceit of the Military Industrialist Complex in SE Asia. Even Dr. Tom Dooley, the gay Navy doctor who ran a free clinic in Laos, spoke ill of the CIA mucking around the jungle trying to set up their heroin smuggling operation. Nixon supported it as did Reagan.

@skidoomxz9 Nixon did what he knew what was right, and he took risks that other people who never would ever amount to anything wouldn't do. I love Nixon for what he did. Watergate overshadows all the great things he did, such as peace treaties with China and USSR plus ending Vietnam War.

i think what shows if a president was the greatest is what the country is like the following years after they are gone, because that's when everything they've really starts to affect the country, unless they do two terms. what do you all think? does looking back on history really give us the best perspective, or is it the present.......also, history is often rewritten and isnt the exact truth of what happen. just curious!

Yeah he stopped Vietnam only 5 years later after he promised to end it. Nixon
