like a very old song. And for everyone who's just putting down Coldplay and saying they're so bad, have you even HEARD some of there other stuff. The whole album is great and even if you don't like it you don't have to get all pissed just because it's more popular than the particular music your into.
This is one of the dumbest arguments I've come across. Why does this even matter. Yah the songs sound similar, but a guy named giovanni battista pergolesi who died nearly two hundred years ago write a song that has the same melody. That's right, nearly TWO HUNDRED years ago.its NOT joes own original song. It's a very popular melody that's been around for literally hundreds of years. I do not understand this conflict. Really, I don't get it. Should we argue because of music? WHY DON'T YOU CAUSE WARS ON REMIXES AND COVERS? Coldplay did the great job. It isn't a kind of shame or profanation, while most covers and remixes are. What the....?!
Honestly they didn't rip off the song. It's nothing more than inspiration at the most if it isn't coincidence. Theres hardly any similarities, especially once Aatriani takes a shit all over a guitar from 1:21 to the end of the song. All in all, Coldplay is much better at writing songs. After all, "Good artists copy, great artists steal." -Picasso
@poof308 What? you say that coldplay writes beter songs than Satch?Satch is not a musiciat...he's a composer,a modern time Beethoven......and you don't really need words to be a legend.....and Satriani does not take shit on his guitar.....hes having sex with it (haters will hate) xD
@dyazRO Oh come on, I'm not hating. I just prefer Coldplay to Satriani. Its not against him or anything, it all comes down to the type of music I like. And both artists are composers and musicians. Considering the fact that people of Beethoven's time listened to that music for the same reason we listen to ours, it doesn't matter if it has words or not. It's all your own opinion. Both artists have great talent and great creativity. I just think Coldplay didn't copy the work.
@poof308 Yeah I know....I also say about Metallica that they lack of soul especially Kirk Hammet but mainly because I hate metal.........I see your point.....and yes you are somehow right....theres no obligation for people to love a certain singer....they love what they want.....but I still think that Coldplay copeid Satch....Joe would never be an asshole and sue Coldplay if he wasn't 100% sure about the fact that they copied him...IMO
With all respect for Satriani - a guitar genius, but he must be hell of an asshole, to accuse anyone of copying, in case of such a dumb harmony played so many times, and equally dumb melody. Both could be an idea of a random fool with guitar, really - I'm speaking as one of them. Anyway, in Satriani's song it sounds awfully uninteresting, and Coldplay have at least arranged it in kinda' quite clever way, by making it's timbre pleasant, and putting nice tension in rythm.
Coldplay actually admitted the tune of Satriani sneaked into their heads. Foul play, who knows.. But both partys came to an mutual understanding so there wasnt a lawsuit.
Both songs are great! There are some similarities but it isn't enough to justify any bad blood between anyone. Also damn Digital Devil Saga, whenever I hear a good song with electric guitar in it I think of that game. =)
I'm the biggest fan of Satriani, but let's be impartial, the resemblance of the two songs is obviously a coincidence, there are thousands of songs more similar than these two...also there are millions of songs composed in the history of music and of course it is expected be a lot of similarities...
I bet Cold Play members didn't even know Satriani's song (pop artists have bad taste)...
Satriani was certainly high when he opened this lawsuit...
is this the best you can do? There are tonnes of song with that type of progession and feel.....no one owns a monopoly on progressions.....each song has a diffrent feel and sound over all, that all the matters.
Pretty disappointing, my respect for Coldplay has slightly diminished...I wasn't really a big fan of their Viva La Vida album though..compared to the others it's mediocre at best.
Didn't If I could fly come out in like the 2004? O.o and didn't viva la vida come out like, in 2008? o.O so coldplay fans have no argument. The satchinator came out with his song first, and made it perfectly. So blah.
@cheeseman1777 Do you know "Frances Limon " By "Enanios verdes"? Joe and Coldplay copy the same progressions of notes xD and Frances Limon come out in 2002
xd so... joe and coldplay fans have no arguments , just a coincidence :)
@NickyWColeman I assume you are talking about another Joe song because this one was released in 04. One year after the Alizee song, BUT it took 10 years for Joe to complete the song so if you do the math, That would be 94, 9ine years before her release.
@11kopitar Are you sure you put enough zeroes on that, lol. Seriously, I hope you are kidding - Satriani as an individual has more talent than all members of Coldplay combined. The comparison is so pointless it's actually silly.
you raised the pitch of Viva la vida, it starts a half step lower.
and who cares, its not like this Joe guys owns the chord progression. If we didn't allow people to use similar chord progressions, we'd only have like 50 songs.
It's like criticizing Picasso for using the color yellow in his paintings because Leonardo Da Vinci did. It's baseless. Just enjoy music.
@nick0523 It's not the chord progression that people are making the big deal over. It's the fact that the vocal melody in "Viva la Vida" is almost identical to the lead guitar in "If I could fly". I know that similar melodies are bound to happen, but it's almost TOO similar.
@MegapPlayer How does it prove anything? Number one, Joe Satriani wrote this music. There shouldn't even be vocals over it to begin with. Number two, I am QUITE confident Satriani is a better musician than everyone in Coldplay combined. Coming from a true musician's standpoint (having been trained in classical music) and also just by ear, Satriani is better. Bottom line.
@StKMindStorM Who cares you are trained in classical music . And did I say anything about the bald . I said Chris' voice is far better then the guitar's . Learn reading first and then reply .
@MegapPlayer I addressed what you said, and I supported my comment. YOU learn to read before you get defensive. It's your OPINION if the vocals sound better than the guitar; it doesn't prove anything. The main point to me is, there shouldn't even be vocals over it; Coldplay stole the song.
i believe Coldplay/Joe whoever listen to the song before the song was already ON then he/them unconciously played on the record, human nature can't blame it but you can certainly sue it... if it comes to me both versions suck as much as their players
I don't want to get in an argument here, so I'm saying this one comment, nothing more. To all those comments where people say "even the tempo, etc., is the same, so that's evidence of plagiarism," when they mashed the songs together, they edited the songs, including key and tempo. What they did is misleading. Just because in this version the key and tempo are the same doesn't mean in real life they are. You know, this is the whole "Under Pressure" and "Ice Ice Baby" thing all over again. Just w
Viva la vida was recorded in 2007. If I Could Fly was recorded in 2004, 3 years before. Took 7 years to write and was dedicated to his wife. That is one of the big reasons to the lawsuit. It is a very special song for Joe. The money paid by Coldplay to Joe was given to charity. Joe never wanted Coldplay money, was only a matter of principles.
@jongo2011 please look into jazz fusion before you make such absolute statements... I could easily say Al Di Meola is hands down the best instrumental player to have picked up the guitar and it would be closer to the truth.
@NeoSoftwarePWNXORZ But Coldplay wouldn't have got that much dough, though they would have gotten more than they did if they did that because they had to pay Satriani
@NeoSoftwarePWNXORZ Satch wrote 'If I could fly' before coldplay. There is nothing wrong with taking a cord progression and using it as a foundation to a song, but if your song ends up sound pretty damn close to another song don't use it. Song writing 101
in order of appearance: Cat Setevens (Foreigner Suite 1972), Enanitos Verdes (Frances Limon 2002), Joe Satriani (If i could fly 2004), Coldplay ('Viva la Vida 2008), who wrote it first??? all songs has a very basic lick, is just a progresion on scale, but Satch do it better!! greetings.
Ok let's be honest now, Joe Satriani is a great guitar player and composer.
And the fact is that ''Is There Love in Space?'' came out in 2004 and ''Viva la Vida or Death and All His Friends'' in 2008.
But music exist as long as men can remember and if you compose by the rules of the Harmony there is a limited amount of possibilities for music without modulations. So don't you think all of those have already been used throughout all those years?
I don't think every thing that's possible with music is even close to having been done.
How music works has not changed but times have changed, and as a result new musical discoveries are made. The setting of your environment and the time period in which you live will affect the kind of music you create.
I mean, it's not as if they had Techno music during the the classical era.
A positive to be made out of this is that Satriani's song will be introduced to an audience who might not heard it.If anything I think Coldplay should give him the credit by getting him to release a version of LaVida with him playing his alongside as his guitar playing is outstanding.
Simply hilarious. I'm a fan of both artists, but Satch has got delusions of grandeur if thinks Coldplay play stole this line from him. He must play around 50 of these different solo melodies on each album - it's pure chance. One of them was going to sound like something by somebody. Plus, do you really think they'd be listening to this for ideas? I very much doubt it. More importantly, why has Glenn Frey remained so quiet about Lady Gaga stealing "You belong to the City" melody fro Poker Face?
@OtherRealmer actually it might not, its just a cheap way to get something swept under the carpet which avoids a long, drawn out court case that could end up being presided over by a judge that hasnt a clue what music is ...
when u think about it this is wat rock needs a singer who has amazing writing skills and a good voice, and a guitar virtuoso and maybye rock will be cool again
@mrcmxoner It's obvious you don't play music, and if you do, not very well at all. You're a moron, thats like hanging out with you girlfriend's ex boyfriend.
What sucks is that it sounds good mashed up! I wish they would have gotten together to make this track. Well, I mean, it seems like it could theoretically sound good... I know that your goal wasn't to make a perfectly mastered version ;) I do like this better than either alone.
wtf is this!? Satch plays on a way higher octave than this note! The singer vocalizes a lower octave. and the beat for both songs are ther same. and so is the rhythm
I agree with your argument, however coldplay just got to much influence on the song of Satriani, to the point that 90% of the melody comes from the Joe Satriani. Music in general is just "cycle", whether you belong to the emo, punk, metal, classical, reggae, rock, etc. The notes are there, the trick is how on how you compose the song, 30% - influence of music and the rest is originality. That is were the coldplay made a mistake, change the beat and put some lyrics and that it..
I like how the pictures are facing each other, and Satch actually looks like he's yelling at... whoever that Coldplay guy is.
Sorry to Coldplay fans, but I don't care enough about them to learn their names.
Anyway, I love Joe's music, and I find it appalling that anyone could copy him and try to get away with it. Especially after some of the quotes I've seen from them... Not cool guys... not cool at all.
@Shadow07Warrior1989 how can you be called 'Shadow Warrior' and find something this lame 'appalling'. its hardly an original riff is it, any fool could come up with that. u gonna copyright the chord of 'a' next?
how can any court, in countries with problems like usa and Uk, have time to spend on such stupid utter bollox. they should fine satriani for being a time wasting money grabbing shite hawk.
Here's my input, Satriani is awesome and Coldplay sucks :)

@jongo2011 please look into jazz fusion before you make such absolute statements... I could easily say Al Di Meola is hands down the best instrumental player to have picked up the guitar and it would be closer to the truth.
BobMillahhh 6 months ago
@NeoSoftwarePWNXORZ But Coldplay wouldn't have got that much dough, though they would have gotten more than they did if they did that because they had to pay Satriani
FlyingBadman 3 months ago
@NeoSoftwarePWNXORZ Satch wrote 'If I could fly' before coldplay. There is nothing wrong with taking a cord progression and using it as a foundation to a song, but if your song ends up sound pretty damn close to another song don't use it. Song writing 101

in order of appearance: Cat Setevens (Foreigner Suite 1972), Enanitos Verdes (Frances Limon 2002), Joe Satriani (If i could fly 2004), Coldplay ('Viva la Vida 2008), who wrote it first??? all songs has a very basic lick, is just a progresion on scale, but Satch do it better!! greetings.

Ehhh, no. Both songs are great, and Coldplay had an out-of-court settlement. Pretty much proved themselves "guilty as hell" in law terms.
Uberado 3 months ago
@Uberado I know I sound really really thick but I can't tell the difference how are they guilty as hell?
ladylemonae 3 months ago
Ok let's be honest now, Joe Satriani is a great guitar player and composer.
And the fact is that ''Is There Love in Space?'' came out in 2004 and ''Viva la Vida or Death and All His Friends'' in 2008.
But music exist as long as men can remember and if you compose by the rules of the Harmony there is a limited amount of possibilities for music without modulations. So don't you think all of those have already been used throughout all those years?
RideTheRoses 1 year ago
@RideTheRoses Limited amount of possibilities?
You sure don't listen much music.
BravoAlfaLima 1 year ago
@RideTheRoses
I don't think every thing that's possible with music is even close to having been done.
How music works has not changed but times have changed, and as a result new musical discoveries are made. The setting of your environment and the time period in which you live will affect the kind of music you create.
I mean, it's not as if they had Techno music during the the classical era.
BrokenWingman 1 year ago
I dunno man...the vocal melody is pretty much an exact duplicate of Satch's guitar line.
Seems pretty obvious to me.
I hope ol' Joe paid his mortgage or put a kid through college with the money from the settlement.
Fucking Coldplay - pretentious, vapid nothings biting off the legacy of a dedicated musician.
Douchebags.

@MostAncientOne and Satriani ripped it off from Cat Stevens - Foreigner Suite.

A positive to be made out of this is that Satriani's song will be introduced to an audience who might not heard it.If anything I think Coldplay should give him the credit by getting him to release a version of LaVida with him playing his alongside as his guitar playing is outstanding.

Coldplay should have copied Surfing With the Alien.

Coldplay agreed to an out of court settlement - That fact alone means "guilty as sin" for all purposes.
OtherRealmer 1 year ago
@OtherRealmer actually it might not, its just a cheap way to get something swept under the carpet which avoids a long, drawn out court case that could end up being presided over by a judge that hasnt a clue what music is ...
Though that said coldplay are guilty as sin

What sucks is that it sounds good mashed up! I wish they would have gotten together to make this track. Well, I mean, it seems like it could theoretically sound good... I know that your goal wasn't to make a perfectly mastered version ;) I do like this better than either alone.

You also have to remember that people do remixes of songs all the time.
tdriftking88 1 year ago

@Shadow07Warrior1989 how can you be called 'Shadow Warrior' and find something this lame 'appalling'. its hardly an original riff is it, any fool could come up with that. u gonna copyright the chord of 'a' next?
how can any court, in countries with problems like usa and Uk, have time to spend on such stupid utter bollox. they should fine satriani for being a time wasting money grabbing shite hawk.
wyrda222 1 year ago
@wyrda222 You really think that the name I use on youtube is supposed to mean something? Sad.
Trying to relate the name I use on youtube to the situation presented in this video just shows how ignorant you truly are to what is going on.
If you have a problem with the courts of the US, don't take them up with me just because I don't like what is going on in this video.
I should fine you for wasting my time with your complete and utter bollox argument.
