Unfortunately I must disagree, although I do very much so enjoy this movement, I must say that when it comes to pure and beautiful lines that just flow from note to note, the adagio is just pure genius, and has a little more substance in the background parts. But don't get me wrong, i still love this piece. :)
This is Shostakovich all right. How many symphonies made their appearance here - no 1, 10 and, I think, 5 and maybe even more. And therewas even a snippet that recalled Elgar's VC. Awesome!
it's funny to see genevieve play open notes for measures and measures occasionally.fantastic, one of my favourite pieces palyed by my favourite quartet:)
string quartet no8 is one of Shostakovich's most amazing pieces of music and this performance is fabulous... maybe the second movement is a little overbearing dynamically but otherwise an amazing performance of a spectacualr piece that is a hard piece to play well...
Very emotive performance of a beautiful piece. The first movement is so dark and tragic, and the second movement is played with such energy and anger. Would love to hear their performance of the rest of the quartet, which in my opinion is one of Schostakovich's greatest works.
yet, his daughter said that the government made him write that dedication and it was really for himself - it was written write after he joined the communist party and he got really sick
many people thought that shostakovich wrote this piece as a kind of musical suicide note because he was constantly persecuted for his work by stalinist russia, and ended up composing works after that were agreeable to the communist party.
Many people must be missinformed in that regard because his subsequent string quartets were not anymore agreeable in musical qualities, rather the party was because Stalin had already died and Shostakovich had submitted to political pressure and joined. Lev Lebedinsky alleged that Shostakovich was suicidal at the time of the composition but most of his subsequent works are similarly fatalistic in character and they doesn't represent the kind of 'artistic suicide' that you seem to imply.
I feel like saying Shostakovich "submitted to political pressure and joined the party" is too convenient a summation. Until Stalin died in 1953, composers, authors, filmmakers -- artists in general -- were under tremendous scrutiny by the government. Maybe this piece wasn't the "suicide note" that everyone says it is, but it isn't a secret that Shostakovich and others in his and other fields were seriously oppressed by Stalinism and Soviet Russia for the 25 years Stalin was running things.

It was not as captivating a composition as I would have expected. My mind meandered from the piece. If there was an additional percussive element outside of the strings it would have added dimension. But then again it wouldn't be a string quartet...Adios
Those first four notes that are the theme for the start of this are D-Eflat-C-B, which in german notation is written D-Es-C-H: D.Sch. for Shostakovich's initials. He used this as his musical signature in a few compositions.
Damn...I was getting a group to play this song for solo and ensemble this year..but the second violinist quit cause he didn't have enough time to practice it. I want to play this soooooooo bad.... Nice job on it though!
Now for some serious talk. This is a tremendously difficult work to pull off; not only technicaly but also spiritually. There is far more to it than mere morbidness! This recording is more of a rendering than an interpretation.
I was stoned when i watched this for the first time in the Boston apple store. it's the best metal I've ever heard.

One of the finest string quartets, albeit missing a couple of movements, very expressively performed.

Great performance overall. For me the second movement was lagging a bit, but the musicality and expression was superb. Thanks for posting! :)
