I felt the performance was a departure from the score, especially in "And all the people rejoiced". It was sung stacatto whereas, according to the score, was supposed to be sung legatto.
@burrico85 The UEFA Champions League theme song is an arrangement by Tony Britten of Georg Frideric Handel's "Zadok the Priest" from the Coronation Anthems!
For the tempo: remember this is only the background noise for the anointing and therefore the 2 important actors archbishop and new souvereign dictate the speed. Form follows function and the choir has to follow the anointment performance, not otherwise.
Good lord...they're playing it at half time! It drags too much and loses the sense of expectation that Handel intended with this unusually long instrumental introduction....played at the right speed it is sublime.
@shababgeg Seriously....it went from half time in the beginning section to double time on "And all the people rejoiced" and then dragged again for "God Save the King".
There is nobility and certainty of confidence in this piece. One imagines oneself marching with solemnity and grace in ceremony. It is human to so fantasize, so do so. Fantasize you are being crowned a great glory of the Earth.
@Smokers1988 Well too slow or not?? Who knows lol ;) Who knows how fast or slow Haendel did play it at the time? Nobody know unfortunatly. But i noticed, that classic music often are playd too fast in this days. At least my feelings tell me that :) But its just my personnel feeling of course..
@Nimo753 more to learn than any other country?.....only cuz yall went to a bunch of other countries, invaded them and erased half of their own histories =/
@ChemikosTechnikos Not really, this is what the Prussian/German Nationalist propaganda orchestrated in the 19th Century, the idea of a great Germany spanning centuries.
In the 18th Century it would be like asking a Russian whether he was a Slav, asking an Austrian whether he was Deutsch or like asking Oliver Cromwell whether he was a Briton, the question would be odd and even incomprehensible to all of them and Cromwell would no doubt say he was English.
@thrombox Sorry, this is a poor comparison. Welshmen, Scots and Englishmen are peoples with their own languages.
Saxonians, Bavarians, Prussians did not. Since Martin Luther speaks Germany a unified high-level language, and the German middle class feels the same way.
@ChemikosTechnikos Again no, many Saxons and Bavarians to this day speak dialects of German, much like France had several dialects, much like Swiss German today is very different to commonly spoken German, much like Austrian is again a German dialect.
Prussia rigourously edited its history in the 19th Century and upon unification at the height of Germanisation the language was standardised & enforced at the end of the century.
...and most Scots spoke English long before British unification.

Hello, I agree that this is to me the best version ever of Zadok the Priest. But any one of know what version it is? Where was it recorded? By whom? Thank you beforehand if you have that info available.
@JesusFreakDK This looks like a Russian painted icon done in Baroque stile and it depict Jesus Christ (see from abreviations IC [Isus}] XC [Hristos] just above His shoulders). What is written above it is Svedrzitelj (the literal translation would be from the church slavonic One who holds everything together) Greek would be Pantokratoros meaning One who rules over everything. I hope this is enough
@josefk64 Germany did not exist in those days, if you spoke to Bach or Beethoven of Germany they'd have no idea what you were talking about, despite what the Nationalistic propaganda & Imperial re-writing of German/Prussian history in the 19th Century has to say.
@thrombox OK they came from states wich now are in present Germany. I know Germany was build up from many little kingdoms wich unite later. But those guys were germans anyhow
@josefk64 If you asked Bach if he was German he wouldn't know what you were talking about and would probably have said he was Saxon. It would be the same thing as asking an Austrian whether he was German at the time.

This is wrong. "German" was already in the 15th Century, a fixed term.
And Luther wrote a letter 'To the Christian Nobility of the German nation'.
Handel would have said: I am a German from Halle.
Halle was in in the Reichs-District of Saxony, but was prussian!
But the population was Saxon,
That's too complecated for foreigners. Therefore: I am a German from Halle. Really!
