She is AWESOME!! I'm playing the witch in my stage school's production in Feb (only trouble is we have to use our normal accents in Oz unless you're Dorothy, ie british, which makes the voice a bit harder, but I think I've worked it out) If I can be half as good as that I''l have achieved something!
The witch is totally amazing! just like maggie. now being an oz freak, Dorothys basket looks like the one right outta the movie. and that kind of basket is hard to find. where ever did they get it?! lol
Wicked is meant to be the prequal to The Wizard of Oz, which means that the characters of the Wicked Witch of the West and Elphaba are the same people, but i do understand the arguements against it, becaue i do understand that you may see them as two totaly different stories. I supose that you could see this either way, but you have to rmemebr that in the book Wicked, it takes the Wizard of Oz story in it, hence why people say they are the same characters.
Not this one. The witch is evil Gregory Maguire just created a back story for her. So really its two different stories involving the same character =]
Ravensclaw: In your opinion. Because--as you said--the Witch didn't have a backstory (or a name) until Wicked, who is to say that it is or isn't canon (or at the very least, MGM Ozian canon)? As well, LeRoy wanted a beautiful witch initially, but the other producers rejected the idea. And even so, in the Wicked novel, Elphie was described just as harshly as the MGM film depicted her, anyway.
Continued...As well, Wicked CAN still be a prequel (and continuation) of the film despite inconsistancies, because Elphie went insane anyway (in both the book and the musical [less in the latter, though]...so some of her stuff may've been made up (for example, I would like to think that Elphie DID die, but like all GOOD VILLIANS can NOT truly be killed, hence her revival).
Still it is a DIFFERENT character. You have your opinion i have mine. Get over it. This witch is evil. This witch is intended to be EVIL. Not every WWOTW is Elphaba Thropp.
And again just so you get it, I am speaking of the MGM film version that INSPIRED Wicked, NOT the original one-eyed hunchback in the original WWoO Baum book.
Yeah and the MGM version. And this one. Is evil. I'm not bashing wicked i love it. Thisd witch is definately not elphaba. She wasn't written with elphaba in mind, therefore she isn't elphaba.
But then...when Wicked came along this witch was given a backstory and BECAME Elphie. :D So that debunks your opinion, because this version was the one that INSPIRED Wicked and was the one USED in said future/current Broadway hit.
Elphie was created for her, so there was a new story! In wicked this witch is elphaba, but IN THIS STORY The witch is evil. There is no good about her. The witch is evil. Wicked is a different story. This witch doesn't become elphaba because someone wrote a story for her. Like if someone wrote a fanfic of Charmed or Buffy, or one of the books. It doesn't mean all that stuff happened. And until you prove with fact that Elphaba and her story is canon in the Oz world you are wrong.
The fact that McGuire used this witch at all and DID basically lift the witch from this and placed her in "Wicked" as Elphie proves that "Wicked"--COULD BE--a POSSIBLE backstory FOR the MGM witch (remember, Oz was told from Dorothy's point of view [think of it like politics...Elphie's POV is from those veterans that--like most--are against the current state of things, whilst Dorothy is like those blind sheep people who follow what others tell her]).
Remember that there is a difference between the Wicked Witch of the West from Wizard of Oz and Elphaba from Wicked. It's important to differentiate between those.
Also, remember that Elphaba in the BOOK Wicked was not beautiful. She was very often described harshly, and she had very hard features. When Galinda did a little makeover at Shiz, there was a quality of beauty that was found, but it's not something that was immediately apparent. The musical, in my opinion, really did not do the book justice at all.. too many changes.
--Also, remember that Elphaba in the BOOK Wicked was not beautiful. She was very often described harshly, and she had very hard features.--
These would be the features seen in the film, most likely, albeit younger. And yes, the musical--like all musicals--was too uplifting and nothing like Elphie's real story of going insane and becoming the thing she hated to be thought of as being..."wicked".
@BackOfTheHearse ** Glinda didn't see the harsh features behind Elphaba, as she only saw that she was just lonely and not the hint of wickedness that was entitled to her name.
Fiyero said that "It's what's inside that matters" to Elphaba meaning that she was kind-hearted as that is what made her beautiful. It was like a condition that everyone misjudged and only certain people knew who Elphie really was.
So Wicked and WoO are very clever telling prophecies! ^^
BackOfTheHearse: It's not important, because they're the same damn character! Albeit retold by different authors using different perspectives (MGM making things from Dorothy's point of view and Maguire showing us "the other side of the [Ozian] moon" as it were and telling things from through Elphaba's eyes), but they're still one and the same.
@BackOfTheHearse There is a difference but it's the perspective. Wizard of Oz is through Dorothy's perspective and Wicked is through Elphaba's, Glinda's and Fiyero's. Mainly Elphaba's as she is the main character. The reason she is ugly in WoO is because Dorothy is told by the citizens that she is a "wicked" witch, not misunderstood so the character represents Dorothy's creative view.
In Wicked, it is told by Glinda that the witch is her best friend and what she saw is not what everyone else saw
Wow the actress that plays the Wicked Witch is amazing, Glinda is good, toto is cute and well Dorothy is only ok. I wish I would have seen the entire play!
omg she was such a gd wicked witch! i loved that performance! and i love the way they they took the idea from the movie with the trap door! gd work wot was the name of the theatre group nd hu wer de performers?

Same for you.
"This witch is evil."
Again, opinion.
"This witch is intended to be EVIL."
True, but I chalk that up to insane-ness.

Again, opinion. To me--and obviously to others--Wicked is a GOOD prequel and you have no reason to bash it!
