@boltonwandererskings You write this same comment on every rendition of this hymn which uses the Repton tune. It is merely your opinion that it is a dirge and your opinion is irrelevant and worthless to those who enjoy this version. By writing in this way you come across as a pompous know-it-all - which I'm sure you're not in reality but you're not doing yourself any favours.
@ThePANDA1885 thank you so much for sharing your opinion with me. MY OPINION is just as valid as yours so either mine is NOT worthless or your is worthless too. I live my life standing outside the rest of normal society as I am autistic so one more occasion when I AM RIGHT does not bother me one iota. Merry Christmas and thank you again for sharing your opinion
@boltonwandererskings You are right, my opinions are irrelevant and worthless to everybody other than me. That was my point and that is why I seldom share them in general public forums. I wish you well and hope you too have a good Christmas.
@mgohler I believe this was a special arrangement by Robert Prizeman of Libera fame, so sheet music may not be available Im afraid. There is a music book called "You Raise Me Up - The Best Of Aled Jones", I suppose it is possible that a copy could be in there, unfortunately I dont know the contents of the book..
Sir(s): If I may, at this Date and Time state here and attest to the full, "DOMINUS ILLUMINATIO MEA," the Scholastic and Collegiate Motto of Oxford University, OXFORD, ENGLAND. Thank you. Have a Nice Day. Godspeed.
That gave me shivers. It's been my favourite hymn since the FIRST time I heard it sung solo, (rather than en masse and too fast!) and I've told my husband I want it sung by a soloist at my funeral. This version is gorgeous.
I am grateful that there's a wonderful program which features such rich Christian hymns, but why do the producers use such worldly, or secular, places for sacred music?
This was filmed at Highnam Court, which was the home of Thomas Gambier Parry, so I believe the religious connection comes from there. Thomas was an artist, and some of his works can be found in both Ely and Gloucester Cathedrals as well as in the parish church at Highnam. Hope this helps.
It is probably the best rendition of this hymn I have ever heard sung, either as an adult or as a school/choral society singer.I am deeply impressed with the quality of Aled Jones' voice.Thankyou skypilot87uk for posting this wonderful video.

A clever arrangement of the hymn. It's far closer to what was composed by Parry in his opera "Judith" - where the original words "Long Since in Egypt's Plentious Land" were later replaced. In common versions of the hymn, the eposodes played here by the flute (between verses) are usually omitted. Aled is a talented presenter for a neiche audience, and was once an outstanding, and talented treble.. It may have been better if he didn't sing with himself, as his mature voice isn't quite as stunning!
You may or not may consider Aled's mature voice be as stunning as his treble voice, but many love it as much. And as for the duets with his younger self, for many these are unique, very special, and we want more please, Aled (if you ever read these comments!)
Todd, Thanks so much for your quick reply and the valuable information. I'll track it down, even if I have to go to England myself! Keep your terrific YouTubes coming--and thanks again.
Just to add to my previous comment, Robert Prizeman does do some really beautiful arrangements, but Im not sure if they are available to buy. This track is available on Aled's album "Higher" on the Universal Label, Record No. 9865579.
This is exceptional beautifully--thank you so much for posting it! Does anyone know where one can obtain the arrangement used? There won't be a dry eye in my congregation if ever I could perform it. Thanks for any help that anyone can give!
I cant really tell you where you can get this from, but this is the information that went out with the programme, I dont know if it will help or not : DEAR LORD AND FATHER OF MANKIND Words: J.G. Whittier (1807-92) Music: Repton C. Hubert H. Parry (1848 - 1918) From a song in his oratorio 'Judith' Copyright: Out of copyright Arranger: Robert Prizeman Performer: Aled Jones Source: "Songs of Praise" Hymnbook No. 324 Publishers: Oxford University Press/BBC Books Todd.
This is a dirge but there is a better tune (Rest)

i'm not sure he could sing it nowadays as a treble :P
i'm not sure i'm a fan of the flute, but it's still good technical singing all round, that's for sure.
