Superb? Not in my opinion. She comes dangerously close to shouting a lot of the time, and her interpretation is rather unnuanced, except for in the "O fatal vello d'or" sections. Around 3:10 she omits a phrase and as in many other of her performances, her diction frequently becomes intelligible because of a lack of consonants. So rivetting as it may be, I do not think that it is superb.
@MadonnaImperia Superb it is for me to be able to hear Caballe sing this role so early... If you want to dissect it, fine. At 3:12 she doesn't omit anything, she actually INSERTS another "Se questo e il tuo destin", instead of moving directly to "Medea col suo fuggir", which sadly costs her synchronisation with the orchestra, and drives her off pitch. Still a valuable document. "Rivetting" does it well enough for me...
Superb! I actually thought I'd never, never be able to hear any of Montserrat's first Medeas!!!
(Although I like certain aspects of the 1989 ones, but this seems to be quite a minority opinion) Anyway, one plea: jovi1715, a huge thanks for these 4 uploads, will it be possible to hear the end of Act II (Questa Promessa Un Di)? I've always dreamed of hearing it in Montserrat's voice...
