I saw my first live Mickey Mantle home run during a Yankee-Dodger Mayor's Trophy game at Ebbets Field, Brooklyn in the mid 50's. It was a line drive soaring smash to left center that made me an instant Mickey Mantle fan. Most of the players from both teams who played that day are in the Hall of Fame. Roy Campanella won the pre- game Home Run Derby. I'll always remember that day!
I agree with just about everything said here, but I would add, it's sad he was taken so early. It would be nice to see him at Hall of Fame inductions, or to see him interviewed on the MLB Network with Hank Aaron and Willie Mays, and maybe give his spin on what the game is like now. Yes, it's his own fault that he died early, but it's still sad, and he did express his regrets after he went through rehab. A true champion.
You got that right. Without an iota of doubt, had Mickey Mantle been healthy and taken care of himself during his playing days, there would have been one less sports debate around, because Mr. Mantle would have been the single greatest baseball player in the history of this planet, case closed. In fact, he might have been the most gifted athlete ever to play in a professional major sport.
Letterman is disrespectful of the Mick. The mick wasn't perfect but you dont disrespect him ever. He is one of those people like Judy Garland....yes they have faults but you love em as they are. Long live the Mick!
@jimaroo100 All humans have faults. Fuck any Mantle Hater! I was born in 1976 but I don't care. Mickey Mantle is a LEGEND! One of the GREATEST players EVER! An, absolute, ICON!
Had he been healthy, he would've been, by far and away, the greatest player ever!
If he wanted to, The Mick could've knocked Letterman out of the park too!
My dad took me to see the Yanks when I was a kid and Mick hit a ball on a low line off the right centerfield fence. I was amazed at how fast this big man ran as he got a triple out of it. I was there on the second Mickey Mantle day and he rode around in a cart and waved and a guy got in between him and the stands and Mick waved him away. Always loved Mick and always will. He was a true Yankee and thought he was gonna die young cause his dad and granddad did. So he lived for today.
@qman66 wow you are an idiot and if u had any respect for baseball u would understand. Barry Bonds is tainted plain and simple. When he was the pirates he was 160 pounds....all of a sudden he was over 200 lbs on the giants. Wow he has the HR record! really? do u realize that no one respects it? he's a fucking taint just like the skin between your anus and ur nut sack. CHEATER! just like Mark Mcgwire. people like Maris, Ruth and Mantle were REAL legends. NO ONE will remember little ol bonds.
Mick will ALWAYS be my hero!!! When I was in 4th grade Mr Mantle signed my picture for me. That connection with a true star will never fade. He is and always will be the greatest ever Yankee.
watched a few episodes of the "homerun derby" show from the late 50's , and Mantle was such a monster at the plate . Just destroying the ball . Made Jackie Jensen and Wally Post look like children on theta show
I dont think Mantle cared for that last snide remark by letterman. Here is one of the best ball players of all time and the host is insisting talking about getting drunk days.
@TomTresh2cocksucker you not only put out forged autograghed items but are gay too.....We know about your little operation with the fake shit on e-bay....
how is maz. in the hall of fame his stats are not that impressive and why are we talking about pittsburg anyway i guess the ones on here are trying to take away from mick let me say that will never ever happen idiots....
I loved seeing the video of Pirates catcher Hal Smith throwing Mantle OUT trying to steal 3rd base in Game 5 of the 1960 World Series. of course i recognize Mantle as one of the greatest, but as a Bucs fan, winning the 1960 series against the Yanks was truly one of the BEST moments in baseball ever!
@wvmetsfan Hal Smith's 3-run homer, bottom of 8th inning in game 7, 1960 World Series-great moment. AND Bill Mazeroski's series-winning homer Game 7, in same game. In fact, Maz's home run was the GREATEST homer ever hit! How about Steve Blass' pitching in the 1971 World Series? He was completely overpowering. Willie Stargell's 3-run blast, Game 7 of the 1979 World Series was monumental. Roberto Clement's 3,000th hit in 1972. There's more and I'll get back to ya LOL
@wvmetsfan It's OK, I agree with you. They have really SUCKED since 1993. Awful and disappointing to a Pirates fan. They will be good again someday, hopefully in my lifetime!
@wvmetsfan I grew up in Pittsburgh but still have an affinity for the sports teams there. But since the Bucs are so awful, all I can say is GO STEELERS! 6 Super Bowl rings, and hoping for Stairway to SEVEN! PS - Penguins are pretty good too...
the more I research and learn about the power of this guy, he truly was "the man" in power home run hitting. Before the "steroid era" this guy was hitting home runs 500 feet or more. If you read the book that parallels Ken Burns baseball videos, there's a passage in there that tells about his 535 foot home run, and immediately after that passage, a note about 1 less notorious that was hit 600 feet. And all this on bad knees. Can you imagine what he'd done if he was healthy.
I LIKE THE ANALOGY.....IF YOU HATE MICKEY MANTLE THERE IS SOMETHING WRONG WITH YOU....JUST LIKE THOSE YOU HATE THE BEATLES....YEP...IF YOU HATE EITHER ONE....YOU'RE DAMAGED GOODS!!!!!!!
Mickey Mantle for me is all about the power of redemption. In the midst of adversity the man did take a step back and take full ownership for previous failings. People like the Mick (Judy Garland also comes to mind) will always soar because they were monumental talents, but oh so human. And the Mick also ended his life as a true champion, trying to make amends to all.
The most perfect baseball player I ever saw. I was able to see him play the Tigers at Tiger Stadium and he always hit us. Just a wonderful player who was a pleasure to watch.
He was and still is my idol. He hit the longest homerun ever, 565 feet in 1953 in Washinton. He ran the bases with his head down always, never to show up the pitcher.
@mickeymantle7777 actually he hit one over the roof in right field at the old tiger stadium that was estimated between 620 and 640 feet......but yes he is a true baseball idol. The only guy that came close to him in the last 2 decades was Ken Griffey Jr. as far as respectability. screw A-Rod...if he gets the home run record I will have lost all faith in the game.
If I could go back in time, I always say that I wish I could have seen two pro athletes in their prime. Mickey Mantle and Maurice Richard. BOTH INCREDIBLE PLAYERS IN THEIR RESPECTIVE SPORTS. RIP MICK AND ROCKET.
The Rocket & Mick , two of the all time greats. I cried like a little boy the day Mickey died. I saw them both play many times at the Stadium and the old Madison square Garden on 50th Street in the fifties and sixties.
Great video. Thanks for posting. The Tigers are my team, but Mickey is certainly one of my favorites. The first bat I had as a kid was a Mickey Mantle bat. Gee, wish I still had that bat.
You didn't post the video and I could not care less what you think. I complimented Mr. Mantle. I am not taking orders from you about how I can comment on a video.
A true icon. He was admittedly far from perfect but pretty close to it on the field. My Mickey Mantle No. 7 signed ball will always be my favorite piece of sports memorbilia.
I don't care what this man did in his life.......he was, and still is,, a true champion, gentlman A N D role model !!! Love ya Mick. Hit one for me.....
I think that "honor" would go to Willie Mays. Mickey always had the bad knee, as you can see from some of his clips running the bases and playing the outfield. I love the Mick regardless.
see coronachilla's comment. mickey mantle tied with richie ashburn with the fastest time to first base ever clocked (3.1 seconds), and no one hit more tape measure home runs than mickey mantle. the only player with power & speed to come close to mickey mantle is bo jackson.
Well, I agree with what you're saying, but Mick blew out his knee in the '51 World Series and didn't have the same burst post injury. You're right about Bo Jackson, I guess he was the 80s version of the MICK, with a better throwing arm.
scary to think how much better he would have been if he had taken care of himself and worked out all year round like the players do now. He has admitted to playing DRUNK and HUNGOVER. He wasn't perfect, but FUCK....he could play ball !!! RIP MICK
As a 10 year old i arrived in Miami in 1961and MICKEY MANTLE was my first idol in baseball. Of course that was the year Maris hit 61 homeruns and Mantle hit 54.

Ya but too bad your missing something. If the media back when the Mick played was like it today while A-Rod is playing. The Mick would have been shit on all the time by ESPN, the Post, and the NY Daily News. He would be looked at as a total asshole and the complete opposite of a "role-model". For all his one night stands, fights at bars, and just his partying lifestyle.
True to an extent, but in turn he would have had handlers, fitness trainers and stiffer contract obligations and curfews keeping out of bars and the tabloids. Impossible to truly compare.

Thanks for posting. This was truly classic. I sure miss the Mick.
