That is no differnet then a women selling herself for sex, only to get AIDS and die shortly after. It has the same meaning. A little now and screw all the people who will follow. Gerneration after gerneration.
Once the resouces are used up to a point, the US will have a mass die off. How old will your children be in 10 to 30 years?
what people dont understand about wv is that there is two industries that pay mining and logging . logging is slowly dieing their and mining well you like setting on you computer so you can bitch about using coal.
"In looking at the tasks that we need to fulfill for the planet, if we could get more than 10 percent of the people consciously aware, than I believe we could pull the 80 percent in that direction, too."-Dr.Masaru Emoto
@Rodakgreen yeah i love opening my 400 dollar utility bills. thanks for all of that cheap energy! then i get to look at shit like this on the way to work every day. then i got to boil my water when i get home because some assholes who run a local coal company thought it would be a good idea to contaminate my water.
The liberal hillbillies don't understand that God put coal here for Man to take and use as Man sees fit. Those mountains are just useless overburden that cover the true wealth God created for His children.
Don Blankenship is an American hero and global warming is a hoax. Vote Republican so we can continue the proud tradition of using nature as God intended. See my video for more information.
The issue here is not about a stupid mountaintop...its about individual rights. If you own a mountaintop and want to have it removed (for any reason), you should have the right to do so as long as you are not damaging anyone elses property. I will decide whether or not I want my mountain mined. Unless your name is on my deed and you have paid the property taxes, you have NO right to tell me what I can or cannot do with MY property. Obama and his band of socialists are taking away our rights.
will you also "fight like hell" for my right to own and decide what I want to do with my property? If not, we may as well just start signing over our possessions to the Govt, in the name of socialism. We need less govt in our lives, no moore. BTW...why dont you go back and shoot video and report on the post mining condition 1 year from completion of mining. Use the same exact camera angles too so that we can see a before, during and after comparison.
What a wonderful idea: Turning vibrant, forested woodland mountains that have been here for millenia with fresh-flowing streams into sterile rolling 'pastures' whose imported weed-grasses cattle can't even graze on and toxic-sludge 'ponds'. Jobs? More like the REAL American Dream: Short-term Private Profits for long-term public costs.
If you want to help this cause more you cant just preach to the choir. Go to all the youtube sights and tell viewers to go to i love mountains.and mountain top removal That way you reach a broader amount of people. Again go to popular sights spread the word to check out this sight and others like it you have that power do it.
Removing mnt tops is very destructive for the environment as a west Virginian I agree, but I wish there where other alternatives because surface mining is destructive but doesn't kill off many hard everyday working folk around here as deep mining
How anyone can vote Republican is beyond me. Isn't it clear enough already? They just don't give a rip about anyone but the corporate elite. They'll deregulate us to death, then go sip some martini's in the Caymans - on their tax free property they bought with their GW tax cut.
I agree with you about the Republi'cons' but if you honestly think the Demo'rats' are any better; then you sir, are seriously deluded. When are people going to understand that BOTH parties are controlled by special interests. There's not a dimes worth of difference between the Dem's or the Pub's cept' their name-that's it!
Dems=Bolshevik style socialists
Pubs=corporate Fascists
Bottom line: Both parties suck for typical middle class working people!
@n8tureboy I don't disagree, but Republicans are MORE controlled by multi-national corps and bankers, while Democrats at least give Green Peace some face time.
If there is one party who will get something done on clean energy, climate change, the destruction of the middle-class, it's Democrats - they're the party that cares. Repubs care about - what? Tax cuts for the rich and ending Social Security.
On "working people." Dems back unions, Repubs want unions gone. SEIU hate Repubs.
Republicans are "more" controlled by the multinationals, but the Democrats sure have plenty of skeletons in their closet too. I'd like to believe what you're saying but having watched and participated in the political circus for 25 years now I've just come to the conclusion that both parties are hopelessly entrenched to 'special interests'!
Those same Dems want to throw open our borders and let every third-world criminal in and they're doing it. Repubs. too! No difference-none!
For every good policy that they have there are 20 bad bills that they try to ram through congress. Both parties are hypocritical liars without equivocation. Both are equally bad. Both work for MONEY and power and nothing else. I'm sorry to be skeptical but experience tells me that they don't giving a damn about common working class people!
Obama and his cadre are dangerous to freedom, much the same that Bush,et al was dangerous. Just in a different direction- that's all.
@n8tureboy I'm pretty sure I'm correct when I say that the Obama administration has put more into border security than any other president. I also know for a fact that after the passage of the Patriot Act, which promised a certain amount of increased funding for border security, Democrats proposed that funding several times, only to be blocked by Republicans.
Again, I don't completely disagree w/you. Dems are my lesser of two evils, I guess. I know many who actually care about this country.
I'll concede to you that there are individuals in BOTH parties that do care for the country and it's people, but the nature of entrenched politics there in Washington Dceit is such that I think we're doomed. One of the main reasons is that because of the PC attitude and divisive nature of polar opposites unable at achieving consensus that benefits the majority, which I consider to be working class Americans. The middle class.
I feel we're being wiped out and I'm pissed about it.
@n8tureboy Yeah. The average worker in this country has been raked over the coals for decades, including the past 2 yrs when Wall St. is fine and big business is showing record profits. Multi-nationals have no allegiance to this country, and they're pretty much running the show now, particularly now that they can contribute unlimited amounts to campaigns, and undisclosed at that.
Repubs blocked everything Dems did to help working class Americans for the past 2 yrs. Everything.
Philosophically, I'm probably more inline with the Dems, but the rancorous nature of politics has gotten me to the point of complete apathy. You're right about the Republicans blocking everything though.
I know you have to feed your families. We don't want you to starve! We are talking about doing things the older way because it is more environmentally friendly. We do need to get away from coal mining in the future though while creating new and different jobs for you and your families. That is all we are saying.
You need to get a life and quit ASSUMING what I am trying to say. Actually, I would be against using coal for anything, but I am a little more understanding than you...you RETARD! It is called compromise. How about I go hug a tree and you go "get lucky". Also, do wind mills hurt the environment...or can we have those...Mr. or Mrs. know it all???
Coal kills when and where it is mined, when and where it is burned, and when and where its waste is disposed of. The destruction of public housing is in large a result of coal ash waste used as fill dirt, dumps, and landfills from coal-gasification plants that operated throughout this country between 1880s and 1960s until natural gas put them out of business. Now coal-gasification plants are resurfacing as "clean coal." MY video shows coal waste in public housing.
I absolutely loved this video. It was gratifying to see the people who have good paying jobs, being able to support their families. I was also thrilled to see the large equipment, which of course had to be bought, from someone who also has employees. Then naturally, that equipment needs fuel, parts, tires etc, which must be bought from someone who helps support WV families and the economy.
I was disappointed that I did not see the awesome after effects, of land that can now be developed.
omg realy ppl go back after there done and look agian 2 thats how they get coal faster to keep your lights on and the pc your using for this bs 3 if ya notice these ppl that made this most likely dont live in this area all coal miners should just take some time off then ya would change your tune
The frustrating thing about Mountain-top removal is that so many people feel like if we say no to that, they'd be turning their backs on generations of their history as coal miners. You mention MTR and suddenly it's sooo personal, not environmental, not a health issue. Being anti-MTR is taken like an affront on anyone with a coal miner in their family tree. I hate the thought of destroying the most wonderful part of my state.
To be honest I just dont give a shit any more. All my life I have been good to the earth and yes I sort of tree hugger if you will. I will die one day, and at 50 yrs of age it won't be a whole lot longer and I do not believe in a after life,,so as of this year I have given up on he enviroment,,,trust me, it just doenst matter any more.
@TheTrifire Thank you!! My family has a long history of mining & Dieing doing it. It's not fair for people who have never even been to the state to set there
& criticize everything some family around here live todo. We don't tell them how to live, so why should tell us? Until they have been here, they just won't understand. No I don't agree with what they're doing in this video, but they people who DO go UNDERGROUND Don't deserve all this negative criticism, it's not fair.
and to top it off . . no matter what you say or do , you'll never change the production way of how wv makes money . it's a waste of breath . we don't go into their hometowns and bitch about sitting in front of a comp. all day on your lazy ass ! so the fued towards this could go on for days . . but its pointless . worry about your own business bc if you mess with to many west virginians , your cruising for a beating . :)
I am from a coal mining family, and i do live in a small town wv . my husband works underground for Massey Energy. Basically what this boils down to is this guy is clearly foreign and to come into wv and pass judgement on what we do . this is OUR HILLBILLY GOLD ! unless you are a coal miner, and unless you take pride in a hard days work supporting your fam . don't talk shit ! this is what wv does and this is what wv has EVER done so let it be . mind your own .
Oh, I didn't have room for the rest of this. If GOD ;yeah I said the 3 letter , powerful word no one seems to believe in anymore; placed these resources on Earth (his planet) for us to use, why does it matter what way we get to them. No one ever seemed to have anything to say when they started this stuff in the late 1800's with their steam shovels. Plus, it is you people, who do nothing but criticize behind your little desks, that are putting my dad and the rest of the people out of jobs.
@tytyswat911 how about you bible thumping mongoloid faggots get out of my great state and move somewhere else to spew your bullshit. oh and fuck your dad's job too. he can get one that doesn't destroy the environment and fuck up the entire landscape of west virginia.
@deathfromaboveownz I know may not believe in God. Dont think that I havent doubted about it. Think though everything that happens is a counter-action of something that caused. If there was nothing to start the first action what would happen. Also if you think we like taking mountain tops off, you're wrong but you should know that a job is a job you have to have one live in this world. Where I live, this is all we have to do.
@tytyswat911 Why do you think God made mountains? Maybe he wanted mountains. If God wanted us to have coal he would of just laid it on the ground for us to pick up.
@ultracapitalist The mountains are still there retard. They reclaim the land which can be used for many things. Such as homing developments and trillions of other things.
First off, I would like to say that "I AM A SUPPORTER OF COAL MINING." I live in the coal fields of West Virginia. My dad, his dad, and his dad were all miners. My dad ,as I speak, is digging up coal, in a loader, on top of a hill. What you guys don't understand is that we need coal to keep the lights on and the economy going. If we were to all to go to underground mining you would have greater chances of loosing lives but what does that matter, you guys don't care whether the lights are on.
you do know that beautiful piece of land of was standing on is a strip mine reclaim...? and underground can't get the amount of coal as strip mines. thats why we strip mine.
I was born in Logan West Virginia and brought up in a God fearing and respecting home by a West Virginia Surface Miner. I know what the process is all about from start to finish. My question is Why are you people complaining about Surface Mining? Once a mine is completed it is reclaimed to look as natural as possible. Why dont you people cry about loggers who go in and strip all the timber and never replace any of it?
Everybody who is so opposed to mountaintop removal should simply pool their money and buy the mineral rights from the property owner. This would be fair to the property owner and preserve the mountain. It is not fair to impose upon the rightful owners of the property the will of people with no skin in the game.

Have you looked at the finale product of a surface mine. I have been underground, on the surface, and served our country around the world in the Marine Corps. So you interesting editing, journalisum, and voice overs has an interesting effect. These JA's spin what they want tell me where they have worked and done. Get a hard hat and tell me what you find.
If these mountaintop removers pay you a visit , visit their homes and destroy them , and treat their homes as if they were mountaintops that they wanted to remove.
Do something like placing signs on the homes you are to destroy or take and give them titles such as ´appalucian mountaintop´this or that , and use the same construction machines that they used , and the bigger the machine is the more effective it will be in tearing a developer´s house apart. Take from them what they took from you.
Oh my goodness! This is horrific footage. I can't believe this. What a minute, was that a coal mine or the site of another new WV super Walmart. They both look about the same.
Well, first as a citizen of West virginia - i take pride in the fact that im from "The Mountain State". Secondly, I enjoy living in my holler, so im against this practice.
Secondly, as a coal miner - im ashamed of my fellow miners on here yellin all this profanity. have yall lost ya minds? i know my employer all about strip-minin - obviously - they cant make millions quickly, they dont care bout us - only the money. i believe we can get coal from underground, the way we have for centuries.
first things first don't ever talk about West Virginia like! All of you people don't know about hard work. If it wasn't for people like me who are miners you wouldn't have your lights on. All you Obama loving assholes can just go back to having candles with no electric if you people are going to bitch about coal. Just remeber the south will rise again!
West Virginia did not support the South in the Civil War. Point of fact - it split from Virginia because Virginia supported slavery. So, keep your talk about The South rising again, you Yankee
I don't have time to give a full dissertation here. But let's look at the facts:
1861 - McClellan drove off Confederate troops under General Robert E. Lee, followed by the Wheeling Convention, which "repealed the Ordinance of Secession passed by Virginia", which lead to the counties that organized the convention becoming West Virginia.
Repealing the ordinance of secession. Hrm. That doesn't sound very supportive, if you ask me.
@Netguy1121 don't need a full dissertation, nor quotes from wikipedia. If you have ever been to WVa, many people there had family that fought for the south. there were guerilla armies, very few places exhibited the "brother vs brother" aspect of that war moreso than west virginia
Unfortunately this issue won't get the attention that it needs because of the attitude displayed in some comments here. Essentially the attitude is "Screw it, it's West Virginia" or just a general "Fuck the south!"
Hillbillies are the last group in America it is OK to laugh at...and too many of these same people wouldn't know a beautiful mountain from a dumpster in a NYC back alley. It's really sad, especially if it's coming from a liberal who cares about the environment and the poor.
Goes to prove the faster way isn't always the best way. Mine the mountains the old way more jobs for blue collar workers. Saving the mountains for future generations. Maybe the rich owners will have alittle less. They will live. Keep up the work contact any one you can Politicians actors singers ect...to voice and get the word out more make the media show whats going on.
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
the only thing that is disguisting are you hypocritical tree huggin F@gs. You bitch about the mountian top removal that produces coal but yet you go back to your house and use tons of electric that is powereed by coal. I think that if your against coal mining then you should not be allowed to have electric. You could strip mine all of west va and our whole state will still look better that NYC or DC so go back to you dump a** city and b*tch to someone who cares.
MrS-Go back home to the Caucus Mountains where you came from! The origin of no conscience. The originators of the collective consciousness to entrap humanity. Piggyback people with greenwrapped carrot-jobs whilst destroying civilization. Which of the politicians own the contracts signed? This comment has the echoing stink of a cheney's words & his attitude of blank check access! A world in thought thinking. Suppressed technologies coming out. By the people for the people! Trees hug' trees!
I can't thank you enough for being willing to sacrifice your babies health, your homelands and your neighbors well being just so I can have good lights to count the money I'm making off the stocks I have invested in your company and your sweat. I can;t say that I would be willing to do the same for you, so thanks again.
I am over 70 years old and I can remember "strip mining" when I was a kid. I especially remember Harrison County. This is not a new practice at all. Also, these guys should look at areas along I 70 in eastern Ohio, where land has been reclaimed and it is beautiful. Checkout "The Wilds" as an example of the land. It isn't allbad.
I'm from west virginia and dont care its a way of life yeah it balds the mountain but it grows back who cares bout the endangered animals SO WHAT???!?!?!?!
yea but how would you feel if you were one of those endangered animals....i know your gonna think "but im not one of those endangered animals" that doesnt mean you cant think how it feels to have your home and habitat tore apart
You know we have in the us a resource that could power our country for a thousand years. Thorium.
Safe clean nuclear power that can not be made into bombs.
If thorium reactors where invested in it would make coal mining obsolete except for metallurgical reasons.
Wonder if miners would try and thwart our country switching over to a better form of energy? There is kinks to be worked out but the status quo wants things to be in their favor not ours.
Funny, but true story about "environmentalists"... Environmentalists want to do away with coal power, and replace it with "wind power"...right? Well, in recent events, environmentalists STOPPED a wind power project already underway in Greenbrier County, WV. They said the wind power project was...are you ready for this???....harming the endangered indiana bat.....hahahaha. Wow...decide what side of the fence you want, and stay on it.
Mountaintop coal mining should be criminal if practiced without proper protection for the people and animals who live nearby, air and water choked by coal dust.
Think how cheap electricity will be once we have windmills nearby, feeding the community grid. The way to deal with the bats is to put up spotlights. They'll avoid the light.
Let's use logic. We have no choice, if we want to survive.
@nucnews You are right that it should be criminal to practice MTR without properly protecting the people around the mines; however I must make known that most mines are doing everything they can to protect those around them. As a matter of fact, the EPA, and DEP, along with state and federal inspectors make sure of that. Mines are watched very closely, and to think that mines are not doing their jobs efficiently, and responsibly, is just absurd.
yea but they didnt know at the time that it would harms those bats...you live and you learn from your mistakes and obviously the coal company is not doing that because of fucking greed
The statements used by the coal barons are so devoid of any humanity that it seems they are being used by a greedy robot, and we are SICK of the buzzword "JOBS" as justification for the destruction of our natural environment. If blame is to be put anywhere- It must be on Massey and it's mindless thugs.
I love to look at the mountains. I also like to be able to turn the light switch on without making a choice between light or food. God knows the people of WV need jobs. Do they ever! We also need affordable energy. I feel that all fossil fuel is too valuable to burn. There are too many uses for it. 500 years from now the burning of fossil fuel will be viewed as one of the biggest mistakes of mankind. That is then and this is now. We need cheap alternative fuels and they aren't there now.
Somebody is always sticking there nose in someone else business. take care of your own house and stay the hell out of the hills and we all will get along you tree hugging SOB. Coal miner use a little lead and watch them run
They are the "niggers" if one must use such a filthy word. Total slaves to "the boss man." Hey one can understand totally being adverse to having their jobs at risk - on the other hand, if child molestation were the only good paying job in WV, would it not be the right of others to try to put a stop to it??? Think about guys? Stop being so hateful and ignorant! Pray to Jesus for forgiveness for being so hateful.
yup just a dumb nigger hippie too lazy to pick up a shovel and mine himself but he sure dont mind turning his switch on for power or heat in his cozie little urban home!! useless fuck
OH yea by the way. Mountaintop Removal only employs less than a percent of the working population in West Virginia. Coal used to employ 150,000 people here in West Virginia, now it employs less than 20,000. Anyway why not move those jobs to Underground mining so the coal companies would have to EMPLOY MORE PEOPLE!! Do a little research.. and uhh don't mock people for trying to help us protect OUR land.
If you don't like West Virginia, then stay the hell out! I work that area and the reclamation is beautiful. They are able to re-introduce elk there with the pastures they are making.
If you are such a damn coal hater, then the next time you go home, DO NOT FLIP THAT LIGHT SWITCH ON LIBERAL!
To whoever said us coalminers are giving jobs to china needs to open his eyes and realize china does coal too u idiot. Take us out of the job and it's only increasing their jobs. It's people like you that wanted God out of everything and when you got it u whined about where was God when all this was happening. Now you want to get the coal frields shut down and when you lose electric you'll be whinning again. Damn maybe you should have been a mute, we would be so much happier.
Oh and it's funny how a lot of you complainers are getting paid for picketting and whinning, if it's something you believed in that damn much then you would do it for free.
Your reply would be relevant if all the power generation coal came from mountaintop removal mining, but since only a faction of what the US uses and exports is produced by that method, your claims are moonglow. Most of US coal is produced by either underground mining or surface mines that do not destroy mountains such as the powder river basin or the recent Bear Run mine is SW Indiana. Nuclear power in the us is 20% and hydro produces approx 7%. Please get your facts correct.
I have my facts. Over 50% of Americas energy comes from coal. I also never implied in any way that all of our power, NOR DID I EVEN GIVE A PERCENTAGE GENIUS! Additionally, I am hyper aware of the fact we export coal!!!
Additionally, America has more oil reserves than we could ever use. Why we don't use them? Because the liberal minorities will lay down in front of heavy equipment and whine and sue and generally make us buy the oil from some middle east country.
We buy oil from the middle east because you can't power your car with high sulfur bituminous or because a plant was designed to run on crude, not because some PETA freak is laying in front of a Cat D11. I am a member of the Sierra Club and trout unlimited and I could care less about surface mines that are reclaimed to like new condition, but Mt top mines cannot be reclaimed, and the watersheds downsteam are forever polluted by the overburden that fills the drainages. It's the process.
Again, You failed to read. I SAID OIL!!!!! Not coal powered cars! We have MASSIVE reserves of OIL IN AMERICA!!! OIL OIL OIL!!!!! NOT COAL!!!
We will never drill it however. Can you read! I SAID OIL! Liberals always read what they want. There is only over 1/2 a million witnesses to the fact that you WILL NOT NOT READ AND COMPREHEND MY POST!
You are a process. Do you live in West Virginia? Kentucky? Virginia?
Oil is traded on the international market so it doesn't matter if it was extracted from the US it may not be used in the US. The American taxpayer are being stuck with the bill for Iraq allowing multinationals to keep Iraqi oil off the market, therefore keeping the price higher. The war in Afghanistan is about a oil pipeline and not OBL's terrorism.
I live in Ohio, and my electricity is generated by coal from Oxford mining in SE Ohio.
You want to talk about toxic, lets build a nuclear plant so they can bury that waste underground and hope it doesn't leak for 100,000 years or so. Also, stop surface mining, see how long it takes before you find out your wrong. POOR HIPPIES
Actually there are ways of dealing with waste. Some are experimenting with grinding waste up into small bits and injecting it into a plasma arc furnace that is hotter than the sun.
Turns anything that goes in into glass and syngas.
Nuclear power is a good option. Especially if thorium reactors are used brought online.
The coal companies in WV employ so many people. On top of the ground as well as under the ground. This crap that's going on now about MTR, permits, pollution, what ever blah blah blah has caused so many people to be laid off. It hurts our communities. The woods and the mines are WV and has been forever. Majority of jobs are miners, timber/clear cutters, equipment operators, truck drivers(hauling coal), majority rules for working for the mines.
wow, lets listen to this video and stop using coal and have no electricity and see how awesome he world becomes. hello, do you know that without that coal, there would be no electricity and therefore your precious video wouldn't be able to be published. liberals are morons!
and i'm pretty sure Afghanistan, Mars and Pluto don't like being bashed like that.
Renewable energy sources would not only meet our energy needs, they would also create far more jobs than mountain top removal does, hence strengthening the economy as well as protecting our environment.
The problem with liberals is that none of them work for a living, so they don't have to worry about things like having a job. Their mommies and daddies fund their entire way in life. Ever hear of a trust fund liberal?
i cant believe this guy just compared wv to mountains in afganstian where binladen is. haha. I also cant believe these people who say wv is a hell hole. I have many generations of coal miners in my family... i have been raised and have everything i have because of the mines. without it, where we live me and my family would not have survived. i dont think people really understand, i love nature and trees too, but i also love a roof over my head, running water and lights.
I'd bet that big coal mine executive interviewed in the big high rise bldg. for this documentary doesn't have a mountain top removal disaster going on anywhere near his home!! It's like larsinla said below...it's not over until there's no more coal to be had.
What's next on their agenda? It could be stopped by the heads of each state & our government, but there's too much money in it for THEM. That's all there is to it. They don't mind putting the old time miners out of work in the name of progress. Where will these miners find work?
Just to clarify...MTR doesn't take any underground miner's job. There are ads in the paper every day for underground miners. Not enough people want to go underground to get it, anymore, and I don't blame them. I wouldn't , myself. Also, what is mined above ground, can't be underground mined, anyway. The coal seems that close to the top aren't tall enough for someone to work in it. Avg. seem depth, 12-15 inches, and it would take a slim person to crawl through, and work in a hole that size.
It seems even a bigger shame then, that coal being sought after through MTR is only 12-15" deep. Why the need for such huge blasts? It makes no sense to ruin more than "just landscape" & water sources. The generations before us mined enough coal, I guess today there is not enough fa$t enough to sati$fy those overseeing the work, but we can trust that God will restore all we've done to Earth one day.
Well, there are multiple seems, usually between 20 and 50 feet apart. You blast the top, to get to the top coal seem...take it out...blast down more to get to the next seem...take that, and so on. These seems of coal are vital for us in this country to have the electricity we need...and for tens of thousands of miners to continue to feed their families...when without these jobs, they otherwise wouldn't be able to do.
Surely MTR procedures don't employ as many as the traditional method of mining coal or it wouldn't be such a great idea??!! Shame on all who have allowed this to happen! The only peace I have about the whole thing is that we are promised that Earth will l be recreated when the Good Lord returns. May God have mercy on these mens souls!
They're doing a lot for us. The Gov. yea there's boundires for everything. They are reclaming the land either to its original state or making the land into a golf course, malls, or anything. about 90% of the land is reclamied to its original state!! no and you are dumb for saying that last question.
Okay, once again we have a hatchet job "news" report.
Let's talk about facts.
Fact 1. More than 50,000 West Virginians make their living from coal. That is 50,000 West Virginia FAMILIES!
Fact. 2. Coal accounts for some 50 percent of the nation's energy needs.
Fact 3. These jobs pay more than $60,000 per year on average.
Fact 4. Mountaintop mining and surface mining in general have a huge role to play in the current economy of the state and its future development. (cont.)
didnt say i couldnt feed them. learn to read. i said coal feeds us. and someone has to keep the white race going. lmao. funny thing why isnt any complaining about these gas wells that have toxins going into our water. i say we take these enviromentalists houses, furniture and electricity and see how well their tree hugging works then. lol
This is a union vs non-union job fight. Enviromentalists only protest non-union mines. I see it every time the out of state protesters come here. Mountain top mining is fucked up but there is more to the story.
When they brought in the German long walling technology in the 1960s they ran the seams, pulled out the beams and left the shafts collapse. Our farm in northern West Virginia, as well as our neighbors, lost our wells, cattle water and water basin because of the collapsing. Courts found it an act of God. Amazing how God works isn't it? Let's do nuclear!
Your fighting over a bone iwth no meat! Biden said it, Obama said it, the Democrats said it - they are passing "Cap & Trade" to kill coal. So allof you UMW Democrats gave the election to someone in five states thta is hell bent on making you unemployed. No oil. No nuclear. No coal. Enjoy your windmills on top of your cars and onthe mountaintops - if they can fit 5,000,000 of them somewhere just to replacec coal generation. Lemmings - line up - jump off.
This type of Mining is Destroying Our State and will be causing flooding and deaths for decades to come. No JOB or anybody is worth this. Find a new way to work find a new way to get the coal if you think you need it. Our State has become nothing more than a "profit center" for Capitalist WHORES
if you dont like this form of mining you can do something about it. cut off your electricity live like the Amish ! No demand for coal no Mountain Top Removal. As for me and mine COAL KEEPS THE LIGHTS ON!!
What makes me soo mad,is 95% of the people complaining and fighting this are NOT west virginia residents.Coal mining IS our economy, and after the mining is finished the land is reclaimed. You activist dont care that you are destroying small towns and families, all you care about is getting what you want. ppl are getting laid off, losing their homes and cant afford to feed their children, but that dont matter to you ppl,its not your family hurting right?
hi deludeddragon i am not a WV resident but come from a mining family. there are no miners jobs now where we were from and where the mine was was first strip mined then put down to a golf course. Most people are unemployed! The coal companies have ripped you and WV and Kt off for too long. They do not care a damn about you. The USA is the richest company in the world and could invest in the mountain communities so you have work and land if they wanted.
ICAM! Most think little of we Hillbillies b cause of stereotypes. What most people don't seem to know is that big taxes are paid from this area because of coal but very little of it is reinvested back into our area because of politics. Fewer POP=fewer tax dollars returned. Yep, they don't realize that our tax $ help to keep their roads in the cities paved, while ours go to pot-holes! I personally am glad to see some return for our part of WV.
MTR has destroyed mining employment. 160,000 down to 20,000 jobs in 10 years. the bosses will do anything to screw you. so yes you are in a binds yes you need jobs but MTR has took away jobs. flat land? only works where it is next to communities. most MTR is not. most MTR is just cut and run. thats why proper permits are right. WV and KT need to act like the old miners and instead of siding with the bosses who wil just screw them force investment into the area. ps don't have a granite worktop ;)
My last response was to deludeddragon, however in response to your pm, we are being screwed but it it by the politicians and their pet project of tourism; sorry but it will never replace coal! live in WV; I commented on the vid,
I'm not here to debate with you! I Perhaps you need to find another pet project to adopt! JMO!
This is my home state. It's easy for outsiders to view a vid or pic and make judgments; yet they are not showing the reclaimed lands. Everything from farming, vinyards, apple orchards, schools, highway. Yes, all the thing that most consider prosperity in other areas!
morgan, 90% of reclaimed isn't used for what you say is it? IF there was a plan for ALL that then mots people would accept strip mining but it is not. it is a cheap scam by the worst rip off corporations in the USA.
I'm speaking from what I know of this area, in S. WV, where all the aforementioned reclamations are indeed being used as I type, it is also the area which most of these vids were filmed also, don't anyone talk to me about it being worse than deep mining. I grew up seeing the pollution from those types of mines. It's a strange thing everyone isn't protesting the granite mines etc. which furnish the countertops for most of your kitchens. I know what I know first hand. I can't speak for you!
I don't know where you get your stats from, probably from out of your ass because they surely don't exist anywhere else.
Let's take a brief tour of the issue of restoration. There are two types of post-mining work -- restoration to its original state or construction to accomodate development of some kind.
In restoration (by far the most common), the mountain is restored to close to its original contour (could be higher, could be lower, but not by much).
This is just blatant racism against white "hillbillies". One of the correspondents/reporters for this documentary is black? Why is he wasting his time in West Virginia? Why doesn't he go harrass the people who live in black ghettos after examining how they treat the environment? Or better yet, why doesn't he show more concern for Africa and it's treatment of the environment? Why is he focused on these few and far between white communities that abuse the environment ? Such anti-white racism.
Not all is bad. It does take away some of the beauty. I live in southern W.V. Once coal is gone there is no more room for any industry.
With the mountain top removal. There now is a place for industry and expantion. I can name three uses it has had off the top of my head. The state prison, a high school, and a wood prcessing plant. What you tree huggers don't realize is it's not just coal mining jobs. It's supply companies, stores, machine shops, and the list goes on.
You don't have to be a tree hugging lib to see this is wrong. Most West Virginians are horrified at this.
Cheney and Bush WERE more responsible for this new way of mining than you might think. It provides DC with 90% of its power. Yet West Virginia is the 5th poorest state in the union, still.
The beauty of their state is being demolished, literally, and then Cheney has the never to get up on TV and make fun of WV under the lights powered by THEIR coal.
See now, at first I was trying to see both sides to this but once you started blaming Bush and Cheney and absolving local leaders, I knew you were full of shit. What, they can't ban MTR at the state level? Take responsibility for your own state.
You're dumb as shit, the US has already dammed up nearly everything, on top of that, you're forgetting about the environmental pollution that dams cause.
I tell you anti-coal guys what - we'll cut out the coal and you guys can go without your beloved electricity, let's just see how you like it. You say "oh, well we can do smarter energy." Yeah, go ahead and attempt that, then put hundreds of thousands of people out of a job in a state that America has thrived and been fueled by for an extremely long time.
And this "smarter energy" (the concepts anyway) will be so unreliable that people will be begging for more coal.
Jarhead seems to fit you perfectly since you obviously are an uneducated twit. Not sure if you know but many countries in Europe such as Norway are provided with electricity mostly from Hydropower. Try opening a book once in your life or at least do some reading on the net before you make a complete fool of yourself.
You must be forgetting what administration America is under right now LOL.
And also, I think you need to crack open a book, because right now the target for the EU is to have ONE FIFTH of all power to come from stuff such as hydro; and you said "many countries". LOL.
And yes I know Iceland isn't in Europe, but the point is there are modern societies that are successfully running their country on 'alternative' energy.
Wow you really are as dense as your name implies. The whole point is if it can be done with these 5 countries than it can be done for any country. I'm not going to continue this argument since you can't seem to understand the concept. I do suggest you go back to school.
Killing yourself to make a living.

@bigapple2625 I disagree with what you say, but I'll fight like hell for your right to say it.
Liface 11 months ago
will you also "fight like hell" for my right to own and decide what I want to do with my property? If not, we may as well just start signing over our possessions to the Govt, in the name of socialism. We need less govt in our lives, no moore. BTW...why dont you go back and shoot video and report on the post mining condition 1 year from completion of mining. Use the same exact camera angles too so that we can see a before, during and after comparison.
bigapple2625 11 months ago
What a wonderful idea: Turning vibrant, forested woodland mountains that have been here for millenia with fresh-flowing streams into sterile rolling 'pastures' whose imported weed-grasses cattle can't even graze on and toxic-sludge 'ponds'. Jobs? More like the REAL American Dream: Short-term Private Profits for long-term public costs.

@demmmmm1
Dems=Bolshevik style socialists
Pubs=corporate Fascists
Bottom line: Both parties suck for typical middle class working people!
n8tureboy 1 year ago
@n8tureboy I don't disagree, but Republicans are MORE controlled by multi-national corps and bankers, while Democrats at least give Green Peace some face time.
If there is one party who will get something done on clean energy, climate change, the destruction of the middle-class, it's Democrats - they're the party that cares. Repubs care about - what? Tax cuts for the rich and ending Social Security.
On "working people." Dems back unions, Repubs want unions gone. SEIU hate Repubs.
demmmmm1 1 year ago
@demmmmm1
Repubs. too! No difference-none!
n8tureboy 1 year ago
@n8tureboy
cont....
Just in a different direction- that's all.
n8tureboy 1 year ago
@n8tureboy I'm pretty sure I'm correct when I say that the Obama administration has put more into border security than any other president. I also know for a fact that after the passage of the Patriot Act, which promised a certain amount of increased funding for border security, Democrats proposed that funding several times, only to be blocked by Republicans.
Again, I don't completely disagree w/you. Dems are my lesser of two evils, I guess. I know many who actually care about this country.
demmmmm1 1 year ago
@demmmmm1
I feel we're being wiped out and I'm pissed about it.
n8tureboy 1 year ago
@n8tureboy Yeah. The average worker in this country has been raked over the coals for decades, including the past 2 yrs when Wall St. is fine and big business is showing record profits. Multi-nationals have no allegiance to this country, and they're pretty much running the show now, particularly now that they can contribute unlimited amounts to campaigns, and undisclosed at that.
Repubs blocked everything Dems did to help working class Americans for the past 2 yrs. Everything.
demmmmm1 1 year ago
@demmmmm1
Philosophically, I'm probably more inline with the Dems, but the rancorous nature of politics has gotten me to the point of complete apathy. You're right about the Republicans blocking everything though.
I agree!

My dad ,as I speak, is digging up coal, in a loader, on top of a hill. What you guys don't understand is that we need coal to keep the lights on and the economy going. Why dont you people cry about loggers who go in and strip all the timber and never replace any of it?

Everybody who is so opposed to mountaintop removal should simply pool their money and buy the mineral rights from the property owner.

Netguy1121 1 month ago
@Netguy1121 don't need a full dissertation, nor quotes from wikipedia. If you have ever been to WVa, many people there had family that fought for the south. there were guerilla armies, very few places exhibited the "brother vs brother" aspect of that war moreso than west virginia

It isn't allbad.

gangstagage420 2 years ago
You know we have in the us a resource that could power our country for a thousand years. Thorium.
Safe clean nuclear power that can not be made into bombs.
If thorium reactors where invested in it would make coal mining obsolete except for metallurgical reasons.
Wonder if miners would try and thwart our country switching over to a better form of energy? There is kinks to be worked out but the status quo wants things to be in their favor not ours.
mythravere 2 years ago
Funny, but true story about "environmentalists"... Environmentalists want to do away with coal power, and replace it with "wind power"...right? Well, in recent events, environmentalists STOPPED a wind power project already underway in Greenbrier County, WV. They said the wind power project was...are you ready for this???....harming the endangered indiana bat.....hahahaha. Wow...decide what side of the fence you want, and stay on it.
JeffFurrowCountry 2 years ago 2
Mountaintop coal mining should be criminal if practiced without proper protection for the people and animals who live nearby, air and water choked by coal dust.
Think how cheap electricity will be once we have windmills nearby, feeding the community grid. The way to deal with the bats is to put up spotlights. They'll avoid the light.
Let's use logic. We have no choice, if we want to survive.
nucnews 2 years ago
@nucnews You are right that it should be criminal to practice MTR without properly protecting the people around the mines; however I must make known that most mines are doing everything they can to protect those around them. As a matter of fact, the EPA, and DEP, along with state and federal inspectors make sure of that. Mines are watched very closely, and to think that mines are not doing their jobs efficiently, and responsibly, is just absurd.
JeffFurrowCountry 2 years ago
yea but they didnt know at the time that it would harms those bats...you live and you learn from your mistakes and obviously the coal company is not doing that because of fucking greed

Do a little research.. and uhh don't mock people for trying to help us protect OUR land.

leroymoorejr 2 years ago
Your reply would be relevant if all the power generation coal came from mountaintop removal mining, but since only a faction of what the US uses and exports is produced by that method, your claims are moonglow. Most of US coal is produced by either underground mining or surface mines that do not destroy mountains such as the powder river basin or the recent Bear Run mine is SW Indiana. Nuclear power in the us is 20% and hydro produces approx 7%. Please get your facts correct.
epistte 2 years ago
@epistte
Happy?
leroymoorejr 2 years ago
We buy oil from the middle east because you can't power your car with high sulfur bituminous or because a plant was designed to run on crude, not because some PETA freak is laying in front of a Cat D11. I am a member of the Sierra Club and trout unlimited and I could care less about surface mines that are reclaimed to like new condition, but Mt top mines cannot be reclaimed, and the watersheds downsteam are forever polluted by the overburden that fills the drainages. It's the process.
epistte 2 years ago
@epistte
Kentucky? Virginia?
Nope, I doubt it..........
leroymoorejr 2 years ago
Oil is traded on the international market so it doesn't matter if it was extracted from the US it may not be used in the US. The American taxpayer are being stuck with the bill for Iraq allowing multinationals to keep Iraqi oil off the market, therefore keeping the price higher. The war in Afghanistan is about a oil pipeline and not OBL's terrorism.
I live in Ohio, and my electricity is generated by coal from Oxford mining in SE Ohio.
epistte 2 years ago
You want to talk about toxic, lets build a nuclear plant so they can bury that waste underground and hope it doesn't leak for 100,000 years or so. Also, stop surface mining, see how long it takes before you find out your wrong. POOR HIPPIES
spudly58 2 years ago

I'd bet that big coal mine executive interviewed in the big high rise bldg. for this documentary doesn't have a mountain top removal disaster going on anywhere near his home!! It's like larsinla said below...it's not over until there's no more coal to be had.
Bdasef 2 years ago
What's next on their agenda? It could be stopped by the heads of each state & our government, but there's too much money in it for THEM. That's all there is to it. They don't mind putting the old time miners out of work in the name of progress. Where will these miners find work?
Bdasef 2 years ago
Just to clarify...MTR doesn't take any underground miner's job. There are ads in the paper every day for underground miners. Not enough people want to go underground to get it, anymore, and I don't blame them. I wouldn't , myself. Also, what is mined above ground, can't be underground mined, anyway. The coal seems that close to the top aren't tall enough for someone to work in it. Avg. seem depth, 12-15 inches, and it would take a slim person to crawl through, and work in a hole that size.
WV24985 2 years ago 4
It seems even a bigger shame then, that coal being sought after through MTR is only 12-15" deep. Why the need for such huge blasts? It makes no sense to ruin more than "just landscape" & water sources. The generations before us mined enough coal, I guess today there is not enough fa$t enough to sati$fy those overseeing the work, but we can trust that God will restore all we've done to Earth one day.
Bdasef 2 years ago
Well, there are multiple seems, usually between 20 and 50 feet apart. You blast the top, to get to the top coal seem...take it out...blast down more to get to the next seem...take that, and so on. These seems of coal are vital for us in this country to have the electricity we need...and for tens of thousands of miners to continue to feed their families...when without these jobs, they otherwise wouldn't be able to do.
WV24985 2 years ago 3
Surely MTR procedures don't employ as many as the traditional method of mining coal or it wouldn't be such a great idea??!! Shame on all who have allowed this to happen! The only peace I have about the whole thing is that we are promised that Earth will l be recreated when the Good Lord returns. May God have mercy on these mens souls!

(cont.)

What makes me soo mad,is 95% of the people complaining and fighting this are NOT west virginia residents.Coal mining IS our economy, and after the mining is finished the land is reclaimed. You activist dont care that you are destroying small towns and families, all you care about is getting what you want. ppl are getting laid off, losing their homes and cant afford to feed their children, but that dont matter to you ppl,its not your family hurting right?
deludeddragon 2 years ago 2
hi deludeddragon i am not a WV resident but come from a mining family. there are no miners jobs now where we were from and where the mine was was first strip mined then put down to a golf course. Most people are unemployed! The coal companies have ripped you and WV and Kt off for too long. They do not care a damn about you. The USA is the richest company in the world and could invest in the mountain communities so you have work and land if they wanted.
durruti02 2 years ago

WV and KT need to act like the old miners and instead of siding with the bosses who wil just screw them force investment into the area. ps don't have a granite worktop ;)
durruti02 2 years ago
but MTR mean LESS jobs! 160,00 miners down to 20,000 do the math

morganmay1 2 years ago
This is my home state. It's easy for outsiders to view a vid or pic and make judgments; yet they are not showing the reclaimed lands. Everything from farming, vinyards, apple orchards, schools, highway. Yes, all the thing that most consider prosperity in other areas!
morganmay1 2 years ago
morgan, 90% of reclaimed isn't used for what you say is it? IF there was a plan for ALL that then mots people would accept strip mining but it is not. it is a cheap scam by the worst rip off corporations in the USA.
durruti02 2 years ago
I'm speaking from what I know of this area, in S. WV, where all the aforementioned reclamations are indeed being used as I type, it is also the area which most of these vids were filmed also, don't anyone talk to me about it being worse than deep mining. I grew up seeing the pollution from those types of mines. It's a strange thing everyone isn't protesting the granite mines etc. which furnish the countertops for most of your kitchens. I know what I know first hand. I can't speak for you!
morganmay1 2 years ago
I don't know where you get your stats from, probably from out of your ass because they surely don't exist anywhere else.
Let's take a brief tour of the issue of restoration. There are two types of post-mining work -- restoration to its original state or construction to accomodate development of some kind.
In restoration (by far the most common), the mountain is restored to close to its original contour (could be higher, could be lower, but not by much).
The other use is development.(cont,)
WVcoalguy 2 years ago 2
Amen to that.. they are not showing nothing about the relcamined lands.. I agree with you on that..

It's supply companies, stores, machine shops, and the list goes on.
firemedic710 2 years ago
You don't have to be a tree hugging lib to see this is wrong. Most West Virginians are horrified at this.
Cheney and Bush WERE more responsible for this new way of mining than you might think. It provides DC with 90% of its power. Yet West Virginia is the 5th poorest state in the union, still.
The beauty of their state is being demolished, literally, and then Cheney has the never to get up on TV and make fun of WV under the lights powered by THEIR coal.
keyofdavid88 2 years ago
See now, at first I was trying to see both sides to this but once you started blaming Bush and Cheney and absolving local leaders, I knew you were full of shit. What, they can't ban MTR at the state level? Take responsibility for your own state.

You're dumb as shit, the US has already dammed up nearly everything, on top of that, you're forgetting about the environmental pollution that dams cause.
R0773N 2 years ago
I tell you anti-coal guys what - we'll cut out the coal and you guys can go without your beloved electricity, let's just see how you like it. You say "oh, well we can do smarter energy." Yeah, go ahead and attempt that, then put hundreds of thousands of people out of a job in a state that America has thrived and been fueled by for an extremely long time.
And this "smarter energy" (the concepts anyway) will be so unreliable that people will be begging for more coal.
Go ahead though.
Jarhead1407 2 years ago
Jarhead seems to fit you perfectly since you obviously are an uneducated twit. Not sure if you know but many countries in Europe such as Norway are provided with electricity mostly from Hydropower. Try opening a book once in your life or at least do some reading on the net before you make a complete fool of yourself.
Midvinterblot542 2 years ago
You must be forgetting what administration America is under right now LOL.
And also, I think you need to crack open a book, because right now the target for the EU is to have ONE FIFTH of all power to come from stuff such as hydro; and you said "many countries". LOL.
Jarhead1407 2 years ago
Norway - 99% Hydropower, Iceland - 84%, Austria - 78%, Latvia - 77%, Luxembourg - 77%. As I said many countries with majority hydropower.
Midvinterblot542 2 years ago
And yes I know Iceland isn't in Europe, but the point is there are modern societies that are successfully running their country on 'alternative' energy.
Midvinterblot542 2 years ago
Ew a total of five countries, nice - I guess with your geographic and mathematic intelligence you think that's the majority of Earth right?
Jarhead1407 2 years ago
Wow you really are as dense as your name implies. The whole point is if it can be done with these 5 countries than it can be done for any country. I'm not going to continue this argument since you can't seem to understand the concept. I do suggest you go back to school.
