  • This is what frightened me as a child I hated escalators still a bit funny now

  • Comment removed

  • Is the boot okay?!

  • This was still on tv in the early 80's when I was young and i'm still fucking scared of escalators because of it.

  • Those red wellies are well sexy ^^

  • I remember my mother telling me not to play on the escalator because your clothes could get caught, and you could be strangled to death. She never mentioned anything like THIS happening.

  • You laugh. But I remember when I got my boots caught in an escalator. I was sucked down inside the machine and died.

    .

    .

    .

    I got better.

  • i mean ESCALATORS-_-

  • I also kinda avoided elevators since the incident and prefer elevators,if there's no elevators I choose to make my feet tired with my old enemy: STAIRSSSSSS -_____-

  • 4 years ago I got one of my finger injured because my Crocs get sucked by an elevator, since then I always did what this video tells.

  • wasn't there another in which a toy doll gets all mangled in the escalator??

  • and when was the last time anyone saw escalators this clean.....they can't be in london?!

  • Ray Brooks - what a voice!

  • I got my welly stuck in an escalator once and died. I got better but I'd learned a serious lesson and to this day don't go near them any more.

I once had to be winched from the bottom of Oxford Circus Tube Station.

  • What about the up escalator?

  • This and the one with the doll being crushed by an esculator scared me shitless as a kid. Whenever I went on one I'd cover my ears, for some reason. Same with lifts. Looking back 30-something years, it seems ridiculous, but I guess children develop irrational fears, not helped back then by these miniature horror films.

  • They talk about health and safety gone mad today, but my God, they were even more paranoid back in the '70's.

  • @Feisty1967 Not really, they just liked to fuck with your head back then. These days, they're a bunch of nanny-state fags.

  • It was a shit life for the shoe people back in the 70's

  • Haven't seen this one for years....!

  • Use stairs like a normal, skinny person.

  • This is why I don't do escalators.

  • this gave me a rather fearful phobia of them, damn you tv even to this day they give me the sweats

  • @giggityfish-I thought I was going to die on an escalator when I was a kid....we all did!

  • FAKE AND MEXICAN

  • @Legitjackass It is reall. It came for the UK

  • saw a girl a few days ago, crying, no shoe in one foot. The other shoe was crushed on the top of the escalator, where a pissed off mall worker was trying to remove the shoe :P

  • 0:35 i though they were black

  • What about the up escalator? Do the same rules apply?

  • I don't think British people every needed to be told these things. Besides, escalators are terrific. Stairs without the hassle.

  • I should be dead already seeing as how I break all these rules all the time.

  • My daughter struggled with escalators until she was 8 years old. There was one incident where she missed her footing and fell, the Department store was very quick in reacting and stop the escalator immediately.

  • These are well dangerous. I got my lace trapped in one once. It died.

  • A few weeks ago, I saw some silly woman try to get a pram up an escalator with a kid inside. It said quite clearly "No Pushchairs" but she did it anyway. She and the kid nearly fell backwards and landed on top of me.

  • everyone walks down elevators nowadays and you look like a freaking putz if you dont.

  • @dutchgirl96 yes your right i know

  • @dutchgirl96 - Not in America.

  • @super58173 Or Russia!

  • holy shamole i am never riding an escalator again

  • What kind of person goes walking around a shop in wellies?

  • This used to scare the life out of me...

  • When I used to live in Taiwan they and other countries in Asia they walk down escalators they dont care about these rules thats how they do it

  • FEAR AND TELEVISION, NOT JUST A PRODUCT OF TODAY, BUT STILL THE BEST PUBLIC INFO FILMS WERE FROM THE 70'S! PARDON THE CAPS LOCK!

  • @j4wn np m8 i see two possible reasons why this may be

u could have typed the CapsLock button and it stayed that way (just type it again to reverse it)

or one of your Shift keys may be stuck down since u can also make letters capitals if u hold down Shift while typing them

those are the two ways i am aware of

  • @Emrald70 Thanks, I know, I just pressed it by mistake.

  • I'm glad I watched this. Escalators used to scare the crap out of me. I was always afraid I would get on, and end up is another dimension where the British accents were not as annoyingly cute as they are in reality.

  • who doesnt walk down escalators?

  • *shudder* I still hate escalator because of this ad

  • Just to clarify, moving pavements are for making walking faster, such as at airports, where it's a long way to the gate and you're in a hurry. I HATE people who just step onto it and stand still, making it do the walking for them.

  • @SonOfFurzehatt I don't recall ever seeing a sign to that effect. Does it disturb you when people break rules that you make up in your own head?

  • It's Ray Brooks, the voice of Mr. Benn..

  • And use the handrails. A friend of mine saw people fall over like dominoes on one during a power flicker.

  • Meh, I've seen scarier. Same scary voice from the Bowling for AIDS one though.

  • hmmm great advice , but who hasnt used the brushes they have on the side of the escalator to brush a shoe ??

  • Yes..............this scared the s#%t out of me when I was four.............I was having nightmares........wetting the bed...........wouldnt go near ANY stairs for a while, let alone moving escalators. Did they have to make it so horrible? They just enjoy scaring little kids, thats all!

  • @stegatops well I guess one of the best ways of getting the point across is shocking people they do it know with the think and fire safety ads

  • i say if the little retards stupid enough to get caught in the " moving stairs " then let him be eaten ,,,, 8 \

  • Both me and my younger sister remember this and even to this day im really careful about where i stand on one.the escalator used here looks v.creepy!

  • Yes i totally remember this though i must have seen it in the early 80's, i was only a baby in the 70's. They dont make em like they used to

  • I remember watching this as a kid. It scared me for life fair play!

Im still paranoid on escalators even now : (

  • Having lived in both the UK and North America I've always percieved the UK to be far more dangerous.

PIF's in NA are more laughable than scary.

  • Blow me.

  • get your dick out then retard. thanks.

  • "Or when sounding like A as in neighbor or weigh."

I don't know that I would be giving anyone a lesson in spelling or grammar considering how grammatically inept your own comments are, MauMauPlate.

thegirl44, who, judging from the rest of her well written comment, appears to not be suffering from the pathetic grasp of the language that you possess (Which would excuse her mistake as a simple typo), was perfectly justified in her response.

You're a bit of a douche bag and kinda stupid, too.

  • @thepetsleashholder and your a fat TWAT. what the fuck you on about you stupid muppet? actually just fuck off you yanky moran.

  • Lol, idiot.

  • @MauMauPlate Ahhhhh, the sweet irony of miss-spelling 'moron' when insulting somebody else.

  • @subscooby your new to the internet i take it?

  • @MauMauPlate that would be 'you are', or 'you're' new to the internet.

  • @subscooby subscooby is a gayer.

  • @subscooby Ahhhhh, the sweet irony of misspelling 'misspelling' when insulting someone else.

  • oh my goodmess...

now i know where my complete fear ofthe yellow line on escalators came for.......

    its all mr.bens fault......

i had those wellies.......the red ones....

    not the killed blue ones.....

  • That's what you get for storing your boots on an escalator instead of in a wardrobe like normal people.

  • This fucking thing made me terrified of escalators for years!!!

  • Mallrats comes to mind. That kid is back ON THE ESCALATOR AGAIN!!!

  • You still see people messing about on escalators now!

  • ray brooks

  • There was a longer version of this PIF; showed a rag doll dropped on the moving stair; a guy picks it up and the hair gets torn off..........nasty!

  • dont move whatsoever pretty much

  • Listen, not a year goes by, not a year, that I don't hear about some escalator accident involving some bastard kid which could have easily been avoided had some parent - I don't care which one - but some parent conditioned him to fear and respect that escalator.

  • Jesus. Now I'm afraid of escalators.

  • Is that the voice of Mr Benn??

  • Yes it IS Mr Benn!...after he came back for slaying a dragon in his last adventure he was asked to go staraight into the studio to record this...

  • Then he turned up in Daleks Invasion Earth!

  • There's an episode about a kid getting caught at the bottom of one of these on Rescue 911.

  • The was another 70's Public Information Film where a doll fell onto the escalator step and it's hair got trapped in the teeth at the end of the stairs.... scared me to hell, hated going to Woolworths after that.

  • Scared the crap outta me when i was little this advert

  • There's a Rescue 911 episode where a kid's jacket gets caught at the bottom of an escalator.

  • What an awful comment - I remember escalators in the 80s that had been there since the early 70s, and they were a little more dangerous that today's! There used to be a gap between the stairs and the wall of the stairs, and whatever got down there got crushed.

  • Indeed, besides the person who wrote that comment is only a 15 year old kid. This commerical is older than him, so he dosen't know any better!

  • The naïveity of the youth of today!

  • Actually, escalators were far more dangerous in the 70s. I suspect you weren't born then. As for raising the average IQ of the gene pool - I suspect not enough dumb people were killed before you were born...

  • Well, you're certainly not helping to raise it....

  • I am spreading wisdom.

  • escalators dont have that problem any more

  • Yes. They put brushes on them, to stop people being snagged.

  • i won't wear hideous blue wellies on an escalator. it's to sweaty

  • lol what would happen if you fell down the up escalator aka unlimted pain!!!

  • Hahaha who here would run the wrong way up escalators and get bollocked by security or some old twat? LOL good old days as a kid.

  • Oooh, I'm still scared of escalators, I'm ok walking up them, but not down them. Has anybody got the film of the doll going down the escalator and getting it's hair ripped out?

  • um wtf, i walk on escculaters all the time, i dont even bother ifting my foot up ant the end, all that happens is my feet slide of the escalator

  • In America they have escalators that neither go up nor down. Its just so's the lard arses dont have to walk.

  • Did you mean horizontal walkways? Usually available at airports and stupid malls that are only good for setting on fire.

For a laugh, sometimes in the early morning, I'll use a hard hat and tool belt so I can hit the walkway switch, turning it off. Then, put up yellow caution tape to make people think its broken. If not that, I like to throw pencils into the sides, PRAYING TO GOD THEY'LL JAM SO PEOPLE WILL HAVE TO WALK!!

America deserves a little excercise and a BIG SENSE OF HUMOR!

  • i like to run in the direction the go, its fun

  • Webhead92,hate Americans much?

  • Not at all. Its just well documented that America has an obesity problem. Im here in Britain and we're slowly heading down the same path.

  • I read about somebody here in the USA Years back(I think it was a Child)who got caught in an escalator and was pretty much skinned.

  • Nasty. Even just trying to imagine it is too gruesome.

  • You know what I'm waiting for? I'm waiting for a Public Safety Announcement about escalators, but with a hitch. Use A LIVE KID AND DELIBERATELY GET HIM STUCK IN A ESCALATOR. Then, talk about the dangers with him screaming, then have all of his skin torn off his body and sucked into the escalator like in Hellraiser 3.

Then have somebody come on tv and ask, "Now, are YOU gonna play on escalators???"

  • We need to set all the fast food establishments on fire, in the UK and the USA.

Then take those STUPID electric golf carts, Segways, electric wheelchairs, and any other personal walking devices AND BURN THEM!!!

Let golfers WALK with their bags if they're going to take up that much space for that stupid sport. If people want to be obese, I say make them work to be fat- NO FREE RIDES! Or, make them walk off the fat, and go on a diet!

  • Whats wrong with regular stairs? Get some exercise and don't risk injury.

  • I sat down on one when I was a kid, and my mum was yelling at me to stand, but I was too frightened to put my hands down on the step to push myself back up, when it got to the bottom the teeth caught the back of my Parka, a man grabbed me and pulled and it ripped a nice gouge out of my coat.

I just thank my stars that adults weren't as afraid of kids back then, otherwise he might have just kept walking, and I'd have probably been injured.

  • Search here on Youtube for an American television show called "Rescue 911." Look for "Rescue 911- Episode 424: Escalator traps boy."

They featured a rambuncious, yet idiotic kid who got stuck in an escalator in a Canadian train station in Toronto.

  • I was in the Victoria Shopping Centre in Nottingham once, and I had to press the emergency stop button when an old lady got the hem of her dress caught in the sides.

  • i was alwasy scared of getting ma fingers caught in the rubber rail and getting dragged all the way round and sliced into pieces x

  • Argh - it was all going so well till the blue welly got mashed...

  • lol.thanks for this.i like the escalators that have brushes on the side.if you put your shoes against it as its going up or down you get a brilliant shine.

  • he he

  • hahah i do that shit !!

  • I still can't help but think this seems a bit silly. Have there ever really been that many recorded cases of kids getting their body parts mangled on escalators? Surely a lot more people are injured on normal stairs

  • yeah ok

  • I'm so glad I wasn't a kid when I saw this...or any of the freaky adverts that you guys our mentioning.....

I suppose it's all for a good cause...but damn does it mess up our heads! XD

  • How irresponsible it is of the mother to allow her child to stand on the left, when people are trying to walk down! They should make another film to correct this error! It's political correctness gone mad!

  • if you actually listened it said never walk DOWN (but you can walk up)

  • If you take notice of these scaremongering, nanny-state government adverts, you wouldn't even get out of bed. And your bed would then eat you alive. Stuff the government and their stupid health and safety campaigns.

  • I'm afraid now ha! officially taking the stairs!

  • whats wrong with the lift then?

  • this ad rly freaked me

but the public safety film tht scared me the most was the thing about being trapped in a fire tht was aired back in '02 after watching that i was so scared about fires 4 almost 2 years!

  • For a long time (until I was about 11) I hated the ends of escalators after seeing this film when I was 4 or 5. I kept thinking that I was going to get trapped as I got on or off.

  • its enough to totally shit you up!!

  • wheres the ad with the doll that got mangled, the one that messed me up as a kid.

  • Please, please someone post that 70s clip with the doll - that haunted me for years and I can't find it anywhere

  • which one is that?do you mean the one where the iron drops on the dolls head?thats seriously sick!

  • a woman was ripped to shreds by an escalator

  • does anbody actually know if this or indeed any escalator related injuries actually happened or was it just to frightened kids away from running up escalators the wrong way etc

  • when i worked in a department store,a woman tried going up the escalator with a pushchair and a young girl of about 6 holding her hand.the young girl slipped down, luckily my colleague was nearby to push the safety button at the bottom.the girl ended up with just a few grazes but i still shudder when i think of what could have happened.

  • This advert terrified me as a child, im surprised i have the bottle to go on an esculator now

  • me too!! it wasnt until the age of about 16 that i could actually go on one again after seeing this :D

  • Why don't we see Public Information Films anymore?

  • Because you don't watch telly.

  • I love it. The boot gets squished, the escalator kept moving, didn't even slow down. And if you try to stand on an escalator without walking down, you nearly gt pushed off the side by impatient people behind you!

  • Can you imagine everyone being this safety conscious on London Underground at rush hour? LOL!

  • How can the voice of Mr. Ben create so much fear, LOL.......

  • I'm not surprised they made this film, did you see the size of those teeth on the escalators. Those were the days.

  • "You'll find escalators everywhere these days & we take them for granted".

Respect the escalator...or face the consequences.

  • i remember one where at the end a childs doll gets trapped or something does anyone remember it

  • yeah I remember that one. old guy pulls the doll and its hair gets ripped off; nasty!

  • why have we created such a child unfriendly world...

  • child unfriendly world or escalator suspicious world?

  • Thanks for posting!

  • LMAO! When that boot got squished i actually pulled a face that resembles this smiley D:

    eeee that is so good.

  • I never saw this (American kid) but there was this rescue 911 Episode where a toddler got trapped in the escalator at the top, and I think it had the same effect...Of course, he was sitting on the damn thing.

  • That's awful! Would certainly have given me a scare as a kid.

  • y dont u use the stairs

  • There are no stairs where there are elevators. Kind of misses the point, otherwise.

  • Well - they put those brushes sown the sides now..(what most people shine their shoes on)...

  • Yep, don't walk unless you're a busy commuter.

Also, what's the point of having the "stand clear of the yellow lines" sign on the front of the steps when the escalator's moving *down* ? I know escalators can be reversed, but even so.

  • OMG I remember this when I was about 5, and from seeing that welly get squidged up make me think that I was going to end up with broken ankles if I ever went on an escalator at all! Whenever I went on holiday as a kid, we had to go via Kings Cross and I would be petrified of going on them, and the first I went on them after I saw this ad, I came off them and thinking "Phew, I've still got my feet" like it was definitely still going to happen to me and I'd just dodged the bullet...

  • sounded like Ray Brookes narrating

  • No wonder I was afraid of escalators when I was a kid. My dad used to yell at me when the time came to get on and off. It was a real panic.

  • God, everything is a threat.

This advert makes me shudder when the welly get squiged up the side.

  • I won't wear hideous blue wellies on an escalator then!

  • I want to see one on Escalators.

  • i wasn't born till 82 but they showed this when i was growing up....... to this day it haunts me

  • I was talking about this in work the other day and everyone was looking at me like I was a loon. Was starting to think i'd imagined it all!

  • With the scary crap they had on the telly in those days, I'm surprised they didn't actually have someone IN those boots. *shudders*

  • I see kids playing on escalators all the time at department stores, and it seems nobody's really watching them. I usually warn them, but they don't listen...of course. :P

  • Luvvyduck, you should just show them this film. They'd learn the dangers of escalators, with the added bonus of losing a few nights sleep, lol

  • Yep, that oughta do it. XD

  • Everything can kill you. Sleep tight kids!

  • The british goverment doesn't let you do anything back then!

'Dont walk down? - LOOK AT THE LONDON TUBE SYSTEM! '
