  • A person I know who is really into DIY projects bought one. It is pretty much the best tool he has ever bought.

  • ok this is cool and all i=and i would be most interested to try one for my business, but - to actually make something looks extremely hard to do as i have never done anything in 3d graphics before, so it seems i need to be proficient in 3d graphic design and rendering, and considering the amount of time this would take it kinda makes it hard to actually get on of these and use it practically. now if you could sculpt a prototype then scan it like other 3d printers out there, then i would be keen

  • this would be cool to have .

  • ...or you use an LCR meter :P

  • could you make a double ended dildo

  • @silageman Sure. If you want toxic plastic in your bodily orifaces.

  • we got hover cars >.> there still working on them >.>

  • Could you print soft latex?

  • You know how many dildos are going to be made with this thing?

  • This is going to revolutionize the world marker completely, mark my words..give it 15 years.

  • It's cool Data found something to do after Star Trek TNG...Now he can make his own replacement parts when he breaks something...

Kidding...Maker bots are cool..Researching weather I want to buy one or not to make prop replica bits and pieces.

  • My 2 cents. We Bought It. We built It, my two sons (ages 11 & 13) and I. We Calibrated It. We Tested It. We Hacked it a little for our build. We Printed on IT and ??? IT WORKS! This is COOL! The engineering is simple and great. It IS wood - who'd have thought. If I - an engineer type, would have tried - I'd have made this too complicated and heavy and expensive. These great kids made it real, inexpensive, not-heavy, ingenious and very, very cool. Did I say real? Real and Cool !!! .....

  • tools are always expensive.. specially wen you want endless options.. wenn this is for sale for 100 bucks in about 3 - 5 years and you also can print many metals than i MUST have one.:D

  • And just like the xbox 360 with its red ring of death that failed for so many people gee give em a little slack here its only just strted to kick off

  • I purchased a MakerBot in Sept. 2010, and I built it, it worked for one print, then failed. MakerBot support is almost as horrible as the half ass wood design of the MakerBot. AVOID AT ALL COSTS! Also if you already bought a MakerBot, threaten to sue Bre Pettis and MakerBot, and Bre will refund your money in full, and you can keep the MakerBot, for a free machine. Thats what I did. and I recommend it. Please prevent degenerates like Bre Pettis from making money off open source designs.

  • Be aware! Makerbot is very shotty in design. The quality of this printer is not worth $1000. AVOID!. If you want a better RepRap clone, look for the A1 technologies RapMan, or look at Purple Platypus 3d Printers.

  • Machines making machines + AI = T100 haha

  • I have been wanting to experiment with one of these very badly. .

  • Hi guys, any of you have the makerbot machine that warms plastic in London or nearby? Im doing a research project in digital fabrication and I need to use it before buying it? I can pay of course for the help! Thanks!

  • @lluhu The reprap project (the original open source 3d printer) is based at Bath University, you could try contacting Adrian Bowyer about it.

  • @lluhu The London Hackspace has at least one.

  • i wish there was a Kid-Freindly version of the software.. i dont want to put some coordanants x y z l m g r g f I want to DRAW IT with a scale on the side of it saying the height and width

  • WOW..........that was the best use of 35 min in my entire life.......(and I'm not being sarcastic)

  • the problem is the precession and being able to get a smooth surface.

this is a major factor in me taking this machine serious

  • This is going to become HUGE!!!!

  • i want to know how difficult it would be to adapt this to a larger scale. I need to make car parts sometimes and they are bigger than the cubic space available in the makerbot.

  • @803brando well they have said many times that the makerbot is hackable right out of the box, so im sure that someone -maybe even you-will find someway or other to adapt it to a larger scale, and figureout a way for it to produce some scale of car parts

  • now i know where is bre pettis!!!

  • Now I can start building my Ferrari Enzo!

  • let's make sex toys!!

  • Cleaner Nerds :D

  • The 3D positioning system isn't too difficult, you could scavenge a few inkjet printers for the parts, but the modeling medium is the real problem. The extrusion method has very low material cost and it's easy to come by, but the tech has been matured, Makerbot is already quite at par with industrial equipment from the late nineties so expect no great improvements there. The modern systems use eg. laser sintered powder which is INCREDIBLY more expensive and difficult to come by and work with.

  • is Minnesota on that map? i am extremely impressed!

  • I want this thing, looks cool. I could probably make toys and other random stuff for myself

  • the toys industry is fucked :)))))

  • lol

  • can i make bottle or jars with it?

  • Of course! You can make pretty much anything with it!

  • Why they can´t make a HD quality 3D printer ?

  • HD refers to a resolution.. can you have resolution on a 3d object:s???

  • I think he means a finer deposition.

  • Because the mechanics limit the resolution; to make a more precise printer, you need smaller belt teeth on the timing belts. To drive those belts, you need a higher quality printed gears. To have those, you need higher quality. It's a chicken-egg problem. A few tricks, like smaller size nozzles and higher step motors can help, but that adds A LOT of cost.

  • I hope they also make a larger model in the future. You are very limited to what you can make with the size limitation.

I actually saw another full commercial 3D printer at the WiredFest for $2,500

  • Nice, but the only advantage is portability. Why not just have an old cnc bridgeport with an extruder add on. There cheap, see youtube what people have done with the mills. Then you also have the rigidity of a mill for metal and with an extuder add on who knows what the limit would be? Just a thought . But still its good to see people with a dream! congrats to you!

  • Deluxe Kit $950

    FTW

  • 4-chan should have never been made.

  • 19:34 - booo - not to Poland. :)

  • It's not pointless at all. It's a modern tool. Tools are used to make things. What things? Well whatever use anyone can find for a tool.

  • I bet the first paper printers were slow and useless too. The technology has to start somewhere. Once you can queue print jobs (with a drop basket or something) then it'll become immediately more viable. Just leave it running over night and come back the next day with precision crafted parts for your prototype.

  • actually they are fast for small things. and the cost is rather cheap...i consider around 10cents for a replacement stylus pen cheap :)

  • Unless no one sells it. Making things by hand speeds things up, but you wastes your time. The "Flyer" was also a geek toy.

  • I think printing the pen was way faster than going to a shop and buying it there

  • Why an earth are you so cynical about such a fun project?

"What is a cynic? A man who knows the price of everything and the value of nothing. "

"First they ignore you, then they laugh at you, then they fight you, then you win. "

  • Cynicism and realism are often confused. The OP asked what it was good for.. I answered him. It's a geek toy, there's nothing wrong with that, just don't mislead anyone into thinking it is anything but.

  • Saying its just for geeks is a bit pessimistic. It's a useful tool for all sorts of hobbyists. Would you not like to have one? Perhaps you don't have any ideas as to what you could make with it.

I would encourage you to watch a video which I have uploaded about the RepRap. Dr. Bowyer discusses the possibilities and shortcomings of the platform. Whether you're a realist or cynic, I'm sure you'd find it very interesting.

  • Model Train freaks would have hey day with this thing. I can imagine quite a few things I could do with it.

  • i didn't write this comment weird

  • yeah you could maybe make some thing by hand quicker and cheaper but what if you wanted a dozen of them exactly the same. Doing that by hand would be very difficult, also the greatest thing about this device is it's open source with a growing community of people sharing their designs for others to print as many times as they want

  • Awesome!

  • Rage?

  • Very interesting.

  • "we don't need 4chan"?
